So I finally got myself a gig, after months of not working I decided (well my bill collectors decided for me) that I should do something to generate some income. My assignment is to be a technical resource for a big pharma company out in the east coast.
This is really my first time out as a freelance contractor so I didn’t know what to expect really. I’ve found that they don’t fuck around. You may be all 31337 hax0r with mad skills and what not but if you can’t pass the background checks you might as well stick your thumb back in your ass.
So what are they looking for, everything not to put too fine a point on it. Any thing considered a felony is going under the microscope. Traffic tickets aren’t a big deal but DUI is. I know of a security engineer who got rejected for a state contract because of this. Personally I pass on state or government jobs. They don’t just use private agencies to check out your history, they use THE agency. That’s right, it’s all about the FBI background check. They will let your prospective employer know about the time you put bubble gum in Susie’s hair back in the 5th grade. Actually they can get some pretty in depth details about you and get things that others would miss. I was also looking at a contract in DC for a government agency and the required information was a bit disturbing. After passing an FBI background check (nothing major just criminal history etc) you have to submit some urine for a chemical analysis. Now your major players in the drug detection scene have nothing on the FBI, so if you ever sparked up in your life be afraid. Well to be honest they don’t have much on drug use if you haven’t used in a while. HighTimes http://www.hightimes.com has some good information about what chemicals stay in your body for how long. Things like the THC from pot will stick to fatty cells and show up in urine for up to 14 days sometimes depending on usage. If you wake and bake every day you may have to lay off for 2 weeks to pass a test without help. The nutrition stores and tobacco/specialty shops will have teas and compounds to help you pass urinalysis but remember the really smart folks test for the existence of those compounds as well.
After this invasive process they also want fingerprints… fingerprints… hrm. This is where I decided I didn’t want the government contracts at all. I’m a big civil liberties kind of person and I think you should be fingerprinted if you commit some kind of crime against society. That’s just me though (well me and several million other people who think personal liberty is a very important value to uphold).
Now the other contract I did accept is the large pharacutical company. Since this isn’t government it really isn’t as intrusive. The investigation companies run off the same databases and generally are staffed with ex-FBI cutouts. They have to do something with themselves after the agency don’t they? I did some research on these guys and found a pretty decent list of them. If you know which company is going to investigate you (usually this info is found on a contract you sign ‘allowing’ your potential employer to do some research on you.. eg I the undersigned hereby give away my right to privacy since I am broke and need money) you can call and pretend to be a potential customer. As a potential customer you can find out just what they are going to find out about you.
A presitigous hacker would also be able to get into these systems to perform their own searchs… well that is a bit beyond the scope of this article I guess
I have actually performed some searches on the Lexis system which uses P-TRAK and P-FINDER, convict databases and a healthy database of court records. One can find a lot of different criminals among their list of friends if they are crafty enough.
