HACKER GROUP COMMANDEERS THE NEW YORK TIMES WEB SITE Issue: Security The New York Times website was commandeered by hackers September 13 for about nine hours. Instead of seeing the NYTimes homepage, visitors saw a logo marked HFG with images of nude women and statements from the group that included criticism of the papers coverage of Kevin Mitnick, an imprisoned hacker. The FBI is investigating the incident. (You know, valuable advertising was blacked). "This is a much more destructive weekend to be doing this than normal," Nisenholtz said. "We were running 35 percent above normal on Saturday, and typically Sunday is twice as big as Saturday." A typical Sunday would see about 150,000 visitors to the Times site. While the summaries are factually accurate, their often informal tone does not represent the tone of the original articles. The Benton Foundation works to realize the social benefits made possible by the public interest use of communications. Bridging the worlds of philanthropy, public policy, and community action, Benton seeks to shape the emerging communications environment and to demonstrate the value of communications for solving social problems. Through demonstration projects, media production and publishing, research, conferences, and grantmaking, Benton probes relationships between the public, corporate, and nonprofit sectors to address the critical questions for democracy in the information age.
