SUN ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF JAVAPCTM ENGINE 1.0 New software solution provides OEMs and enterprises with an easy and flexible migration path to the JavaTM platform and network computing PALO ALTO, CA -- June 29, 1998 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced the availability of JavaPCTM Engine 1.0, a software solution that turns Intel 486 and Pentium PCs running DOS and Windows 3.x into network computers. The JavaPC Engine 1.0 software gives original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) the ability to integrate a solution for enterprise customers to leverage legacy hardware systems and standardize applications across an enterprise - enabling them to reduce the costs associated with training, support and administration. With JavaPC Engine 1.0 software, corporate customers can deploy applications compliant with JavaTM Development Kit (JDKTM 1.1) software across the network while maintaining access to DOS and Microsoft Windows programs. Its flexible configuration allows IS managers to transition at their own pace from PC-based computing to a cost-effective network computing environment. The JavaPC Engine 1.0 software is easy to install, requires only standard PC equipment, and will not overwrite its users' current files and applications. "JavaPC Engine software delivers the power of the Java platform to the millions of PCs still running DOS and Windows 3.x, allowing OEMs and enterprises to take advantage of a whole new computing paradigm with a simple software upgrade," says Jonathan Schwartz, director of product marketing for Sun's Java Software. "By enabling users to easily migrate from a traditional PC environment to a more centralized network computing architecture, corporate customers will realize their benefit on the bottom line." The JavaPC Engine 1.0 software provides a basic environment, including a simple application launcher, which enables systems administrators to roll out their preferred network environment or vertical application. A second version of the software is expected to be released later this year to include Internet browsing capabilities as well as an enhanced user interface. The JavaPC Engine 1.0 software includes the class libraries and JavaTM virtual machine that allows users to run applications based on JDK 1.1 software. Based on the same operating system that powers network computers, it uses DOS drivers to interface with PC peripherals. This ensures a high level of compatibility with most PCs running DOS, including those running Windows 3.x. The JavaPC Engine 1.0 software is immediately available for purchase from Sun. It sells for $99 per user and volume discounts are available. More information on the JavaPC software can be found at http://java.sun.com/products/javapc. About Sun Sun Microsystems, Inc.
