[00:00.730 --> 00:04.470] Wonderful to see you all here at HOPE. [00:04.770 --> 00:05.970] Yeah, Johannes. [00:11.520 --> 00:12.320] Okay. [00:13.360 --> 00:14.140] Good. [00:14.680 --> 00:26.280] So, yeah, welcome to my lecture, Eco-Hacking Desire, the Intersection of Pornography, Sex, and Environmental Impact. [00:26.940 --> 00:29.600] So, let's dive a little bit deeper. [00:30.160 --> 00:31.780] So, thank you for introducing me. [00:31.880 --> 00:33.040] My name is Janice. [00:33.060 --> 00:37.680] Jasmin Hagendorfer, a long and complicated German name. [00:38.080 --> 00:39.540] I am from Austria. [00:39.880 --> 00:46.100] I am the festival director of a film festival, which is called Porn Film Festival. [00:46.520 --> 00:49.320] I'm also a curator of RC Electronica. [00:49.520 --> 00:54.760] It's a conference festival dedicated to sex and technology, which is led by Johannes Grenzfurtner. [00:56.440 --> 00:57.980] Yeah, I'm a filmmaker. [00:58.380 --> 00:59.200] I'm an artist. [00:59.600 --> 01:02.920] Last year, I presented my film Musings of a Mechatronic Mystery. [01:03.060 --> 01:04.440] Inside of here. [01:05.160 --> 01:07.620] And I'm kind of a smut princess. [01:08.040 --> 01:12.240] I love all about porn and sexuality and smut. [01:12.400 --> 01:15.120] And I'm a collector of vintage porn. [01:15.860 --> 01:17.000] That much to say. [01:17.640 --> 01:22.440] So, yeah, let's fuck each other, not the planet. [01:23.140 --> 01:24.220] Wonderful idea. [01:24.380 --> 01:25.640] We will talk about that. [01:26.940 --> 01:29.680] Yeah, you see, this is important. [01:30.100 --> 01:34.800] The Earth is in crisis, but also capitalism is always around the corner. [01:35.160 --> 01:42.900] So, you can already buy the Let's Fuck Each Other Instead of Mother Earth T-shirt for $24.99 in all various sizes. [01:42.900 --> 01:46.560] So, you see, I think we will come close to the intersections already. [01:48.040 --> 01:50.600] Desire, data, and the planet. [01:50.960 --> 01:58.900] This presentation delves into the complex relationship between sexuality, pornography, on the other hand, and sustainability. [01:58.900 --> 02:05.680] And how all of these three things go together and also should go together. [02:06.200 --> 02:09.800] So, we will analyze trends, products, and info. [02:10.120 --> 02:19.300] And I want to illustrate how our desires may impact the planet and reflect on the need to rethink our consumption habits in this domain. [02:21.160 --> 02:23.460] Yeah, so, Pornhub. [02:23.580 --> 02:25.260] Let's already start with this one, maybe. [02:26.120 --> 02:31.400] Today, over 120 million people visited already Pornhub. [02:31.560 --> 02:34.740] It's more than the population of Japan, by the way. [02:35.520 --> 02:45.900] And right now, yes, like literally right now, 11,000 hours of porn are being watched in this very single minute. [02:45.900 --> 02:47.980] Um, yup. [02:48.780 --> 02:50.580] That's also like quite a statistics. [02:51.040 --> 02:56.240] And you could also say that about 30% of all Internet traffic is still related to porn. [02:56.440 --> 02:58.840] It was more than that beforehand. [02:59.460 --> 03:06.940] And this kind of means like, basically, if the Internet were a person, it would be very, very horny. [03:07.780 --> 03:11.460] And the most popular day to watch porn is Sunday. [03:11.460 --> 03:16.280] So, yes, I'm very glad that we're here together on a Friday night. [03:16.960 --> 03:18.500] And, yeah. [03:19.880 --> 03:20.440] Okay. [03:20.680 --> 03:23.980] We are all, um, bodies of consumption. [03:24.480 --> 03:29.300] Now, um, I care about the future of your sex life. [03:29.440 --> 03:30.680] But also mine, of course. [03:31.200 --> 03:32.600] We are all human. [03:32.860 --> 03:33.700] We are sexual. [03:33.900 --> 03:34.700] We are emotional. [03:35.020 --> 03:38.280] We are narrative, political, and yes, technological beings. [03:39.060 --> 03:42.060] So, in my life, I learned very much from porn. [03:42.220 --> 03:44.420] It changed how I see other people's bodies. [03:44.640 --> 03:46.420] How I can relate to my own body. [03:46.880 --> 03:50.460] And how I think about desire, shame, and representation. [03:51.060 --> 03:52.920] And also how I understand power. [03:53.700 --> 04:01.920] But what if I told you that our sexual habits, including the porn we all watch, actually impact the environment? [04:01.920 --> 04:06.580] And that your and my orgasms have an ecological footprint. [04:07.500 --> 04:13.420] So, we will talk about recycling, uh, carbon oxide, about fast fashion, food miles. [04:13.680 --> 04:17.280] And we will, uh, talk about porn, outside of shame and secrecy. [04:17.500 --> 04:19.600] Because this is what I really want to change in society. [04:20.160 --> 04:21.860] And we will do this right now. [04:21.860 --> 04:30.760] So, yeah, my big question would be, and I'm giving this back now to you as the audience. [04:31.940 --> 04:35.380] Can watching porn save the planet? [04:35.820 --> 04:43.520] Um, maybe those in the audience of you who think it can change, uh, it may be, would raise their hands. [04:43.660 --> 04:44.300] I'm just curious. [04:44.480 --> 04:44.900] I want to know. [04:44.980 --> 04:45.920] Do you think it can change? [04:46.600 --> 04:47.660] Okay, wow. [04:48.280 --> 04:50.020] One, one, one, one, maybe two, three, four. [04:50.160 --> 04:50.660] Okay, good. [04:50.920 --> 04:52.180] Not that much. [04:52.760 --> 04:53.400] Let's see. [04:53.480 --> 04:53.880] Let's see. [04:53.920 --> 04:55.320] We will dive into these topics. [04:55.940 --> 04:59.000] But, of course, our choices have consequences. [04:59.120 --> 05:04.900] And we need to deal with porn in the same way we need to deal, let's say, with, uh, recycling. [05:05.180 --> 05:07.120] Or how we stop wasting water. [05:07.440 --> 05:12.860] We need to discuss necessary changes in the way we consume porn. [05:14.060 --> 05:18.560] For me, uh, porn is always a cultural reflection. [05:19.140 --> 05:21.420] Um, we all watch porn. [05:21.560 --> 05:23.780] At all, uh, at least we all have seen one. [05:24.240 --> 05:30.740] And for, uh, I think many of us this means, like, out of ignorance or not knowing, uh, where to consume. [05:30.840 --> 05:40.660] We often end up on online platforms, and there we get to see the most classical, heteronormative, mainstream, conservative porn that exists. [05:40.660 --> 05:47.280] And, uh, of course, most of the content that we see is sexist, discriminating, misogynist, and even violent. [05:47.880 --> 05:52.120] Uh, and for me, porn is political. [05:52.380 --> 05:53.660] It's never not political. [05:53.700 --> 05:54.620] It is always. [05:54.960 --> 05:58.840] Because it showcases, it's a mirror, it's a reflection of society. [05:59.100 --> 06:10.320] All the things that you have in society, like, as I said, misogyny, racism, all these things, of course, they can be seen in this mainstream, uh, heteronormative, conservative porn. [06:10.880 --> 06:20.960] And, um, I think, actually, that, uh, social and economic context influences how, when, and in what way we see porn. [06:21.100 --> 06:26.740] And we should openly ask whether, how we deal with porn, uh, to make maybe the world a better place. [06:26.740 --> 06:31.040] And for today, I want to talk about different aspects of that. [06:32.320 --> 06:32.460] Yeah. [06:33.620 --> 06:39.400] So, um, another thing I just wanted to also slide in a little bit, porn is work. [06:39.800 --> 06:41.220] Uh, it is always work. [06:41.300 --> 06:43.540] It is a film that has to be produced. [06:43.720 --> 06:45.780] It has to be an audio that has to be produced. [06:45.960 --> 06:55.160] So, um, for me, as for all other work things, there, there should be some, uh, um, statutes or ethics or rules that should apply. [06:55.400 --> 06:58.920] For example, that good working conditions are, uh, created on set. [06:59.060 --> 07:03.700] That all people involved in the production of a porn are paid very fairly. [07:04.300 --> 07:10.200] That there are precise agreements, um, that are made about what is shot and how and when. [07:10.380 --> 07:14.360] That there is attention paid to hygiene, to health, and to safer sex. [07:14.360 --> 07:19.640] And that there is a big transparency about what happens to the video material afterwards. [07:20.020 --> 07:21.740] And where it is published. [07:22.040 --> 07:28.180] And this is what I would call an ethical porn or a fair trade porn, whatever. [07:28.420 --> 07:32.760] There are so many names out there, uh, that you can, uh, use for this. [07:32.920 --> 07:34.800] But this would be really the standard for me. [07:35.340 --> 07:47.540] So, um, I want to dive now a little bit into some, like, funny little things I found when researching this topic of, of sustainability and sex and porn. [07:47.940 --> 07:55.540] And of course, the first one that you always have to come back to is sex ecology, or also called eco-sexualogy. [07:56.040 --> 08:05.480] So, what happens when we bring sexuality out of the bedroom and maybe into the forest, or the ocean, or the soil beneath our feet? [08:05.980 --> 08:09.000] Um, this is what this, uh, term means. [08:09.480 --> 08:14.600] And of course, the founders of that are, uh, Annie Sprinkles and Beth Stevens. [08:14.780 --> 08:18.500] The two icons there are the mothers of sex ecology, you could say. [08:18.980 --> 08:23.260] Especially Annie began her career as a porn performer and sex worker. [08:23.500 --> 08:26.860] And then she became an artist, an activist, and an academic. [08:27.540 --> 08:34.460] And together, they really perform weddings to the earth, to the sky, and to the sea. [08:34.460 --> 08:38.280] And yes, they are literally married to nature. [08:38.580 --> 08:44.160] And they make even love to it, sensually, symbolically, and sometimes literally. [08:45.340 --> 08:53.640] So, yeah, the earth is their lover, something that needs to be touched, to be honored, to be cared for, and to be seduced. [08:54.880 --> 08:58.080] Um, and, um, other people, of course, also do this. [08:58.240 --> 09:04.820] I found a wonderful, uh, picture on the, uh, Internet of a man that was arrested. [09:04.820 --> 09:05.460] I don't know. [09:05.600 --> 09:10.080] It was somewhere in the United States of America, uh, who fucked a tree. [09:10.080 --> 09:12.020] Well, he also takes it literally. [09:12.920 --> 09:29.900] But, uh, of course, this is not a fun gig, but there are also, like, things existing, which is called the, uh, eco-sexual bathhouse, where you can really, like, kind of in this, like, sensual spa atmosphere, get in sensual contact with nature. [09:30.260 --> 09:33.940] So, things like this are existing out there. [09:35.440 --> 09:44.400] And, yeah, um, another thing I also stumbled upon is a project that is called Fuck For Forest. [09:44.920 --> 09:49.420] And, well, I think we all know exactly what we get from that. [09:50.120 --> 10:00.400] So, uh, two Norwegians, uh, came up with the idea that they found a kind of, like, eco-porn activism project, which, um, they call Fuck For Forest. [10:00.400 --> 10:07.360] And their idea is to use erotic content to raise money for the reforestation and environmental causes. [10:07.820 --> 10:16.260] So, they literally filmed themselves having sex in nature and used the profits to support the rainforest protection projects. [10:17.140 --> 10:29.560] Sex sells, um, of course, but I always also want to say to this project, uh, it sounds quite nice, but when you look behind the scenes, uh, it has a lot of criticism, this project. [10:29.560 --> 10:34.960] There were really complicated questions about cons and visibility and activism ethics. [10:35.200 --> 10:38.780] It was all, like, really a shithole, so to speak. [10:39.980 --> 10:47.480] And, yeah, so, it was an interesting idea, but kind of, like, a true bummer. [10:47.740 --> 10:53.740] But, anyways, I just wanted to present it to you to see, like, what are the possibilities in all of that? [10:54.460 --> 11:06.540] And another project, um, or more or less, um, case studies, uh, that we found is that, uh, of course, porn can raise funds for environmental causes through adult content. [11:06.760 --> 11:13.400] And it shows that you can drive awareness and financial support to reforestation or conservation efforts. [11:13.820 --> 11:16.240] All of that is possible right now. [11:16.240 --> 11:22.160] So, we, we maybe laugh about this, but, yeah, at least they do something. [11:24.700 --> 11:32.080] Uh, another project that I really liked, uh, it was, uh, a long time ago, back in 2017. [11:32.260 --> 11:39.320] It was, uh, an advertisement campaign led by MTV Brazil, which was called Ocean Dildos. [11:39.320 --> 11:48.660] And, as you can see, they created, uh, funky looking dildos out of, um, yeah, plastic materials they found in the ocean. [11:49.340 --> 11:52.700] And then they made this wonderful, uh, dildos out of that. [11:52.880 --> 11:54.320] So, I really love that campaign. [11:54.540 --> 11:56.540] It's, like, a good thing of awareness. [11:56.580 --> 11:58.640] And it was, like, everywhere in the newspaper. [11:58.920 --> 12:00.820] So, a wonderful thing to do. [12:00.820 --> 12:07.420] There is, of course, a lot of things already out there that are very eco-friendly. [12:07.760 --> 12:10.080] Um, I just don't want to go into detail. [12:10.200 --> 12:13.200] I just want to show you that there is really something existing out there. [12:13.520 --> 12:17.240] There is, I don't know, eco-friendly lube's are out there. [12:17.760 --> 12:20.560] Sometimes they are vegan, they are more sustainably produced. [12:21.240 --> 12:34.700] There is, like, kind of, uh, handcuffs out of, um, aesthetically pleasing plastic and, um, a lot of material that is, uh, not so, um, bad for the skin anymore. [12:34.920 --> 12:38.800] There is also something that's called, uh, a brand is called Love, Not War. [12:39.220 --> 12:41.800] And it's a body-friendly plastic material for the body. [12:41.920 --> 12:49.980] But also the metal parts that are used inside of this, uh, uh, dildos and, uh, everything is, uh, reused metal. [12:50.600 --> 13:00.120] And, of course, like, also Womanizer, which is a big brand, um, they also, um, made, uh, something really sustainable and really thought about packaging and everything. [13:00.420 --> 13:02.580] So they also gave a thought to that. [13:03.060 --> 13:05.700] There is, uh, a brand, it's called Einhorn. [13:05.940 --> 13:08.360] It's a German, uh, condom brand. [13:08.360 --> 13:12.320] And they make vegan, uh, condoms, for example, for a really long time now. [13:12.420 --> 13:13.920] They're very, very popular in Germany. [13:14.440 --> 13:20.940] And there is also, like, um, period underwear that is also produced eco-friendly. [13:21.200 --> 13:23.300] So see, there is something out there. [13:23.300 --> 13:24.840] There is something out there. [13:25.620 --> 13:35.920] But as, as a good old hacker and as a good old, uh, DIY person myself, I kind of thought, like, okay, this is again about consumption. [13:36.260 --> 13:39.380] It's about, um, yeah, capitalism again. [13:39.540 --> 13:45.160] So maybe why not think about, like, interesting and funny ideas that are more DIY. [13:45.700 --> 13:47.400] So what are the possibilities? [13:47.600 --> 13:50.500] And I found some, like, really interesting stuff out there. [13:50.840 --> 14:05.660] So first of all, there was, like, at some point ago, uh, Peter sent out a newsletter campaign, uh, and said that the cucumber is the only Peter-approved sex toy that is out there. [14:07.160 --> 14:09.620] It can be a marketing gag, can be not. [14:09.900 --> 14:16.140] So, um, and if you're, uh, maybe not so much into veganism, there is the strap-on salami. [14:16.340 --> 14:22.620] Also, as a possibility, there are kind of, uh, things in the Internet where you can rebuild this. [14:22.820 --> 14:25.280] Just search this, people, strap-on salami. [14:26.060 --> 14:39.020] Um, of course, uh, I mean, there's always, uh, the point of, I found this wonderful advertisement of a meat tenderizer, and doesn't it look like an anal plug or something like that? [14:39.360 --> 14:45.200] So, uh, maybe rethink your stuff at home, and repurpose it, and have fun. [14:45.780 --> 14:51.660] DIY something with feathers, and cooking products, or use your drilling machines, uh, or whatever. [14:51.860 --> 14:52.900] So, there are possibilities. [14:53.940 --> 14:58.700] Um, and for example, olive oil is one of the oldest lubricants out there in the world. [14:58.920 --> 15:02.400] Uh, it was early mentioned, I think, in 350 BC. [15:03.200 --> 15:06.160] So, it still is used until today. [15:06.360 --> 15:07.700] So, you also can do that. [15:08.380 --> 15:17.320] Uh, and another fun project that I found, a friend of mine, made it, um, for Arsia Electronica, for a Johannes, uh, conference festival. [15:17.480 --> 15:19.680] It's also, like, uh, it also has an art exhibition. [15:19.860 --> 15:20.980] It's called Anal B. [15:21.140 --> 15:33.160] It's an electric toothbrush that can be repurposed, uh, because there's some things that you can, uh, uh, strap on it, and then you can use it in a very bussy way. [15:33.460 --> 15:40.060] So, his slogan was, escape the overwhelming everyday and indulge in pure bliss. [15:41.060 --> 15:56.980] So, this is also out there, but, of course, there is a big, uh, trend right now, uh, big retro trend, uh, trend, uh, which means, like, uh, using already existing porn and appreciate it again, instead of throwing it away or buying it, uh, again, from the thrift stores. [15:57.560 --> 15:58.960] Uh, and especially in the U.S. [15:59.040 --> 16:04.700] here, this is a movement, uh, which, uh, want to be more sustainable, but there is always a lot. [16:05.220 --> 16:17.500] Uh, of course, old porn may, at some extent, not have the standards, uh, work-wise or also, like, uh, concerning diversity, good intentions, ethical and feminist standards that we now have. [16:17.700 --> 16:20.080] So, you know, what should I say? [16:20.200 --> 16:20.960] It's, it's up to you. [16:21.040 --> 16:22.900] It's all your decisions, not mine. [16:22.980 --> 16:24.980] I'm just presenting you ideas. [16:25.780 --> 16:36.560] Um, one more thing, uh, I found is this wonderful solar-powered vibrator, which is called the Solar Bullet. [16:37.100 --> 16:38.780] I also love this one. [16:42.000 --> 16:48.040] So, and just as a meme, uh, inside, I, I love the concept of butthole sunning. [16:48.840 --> 16:55.060] Um, but yeah, uh, yeah, a dildo that you can reload by solar power, really wonderful. [16:55.920 --> 17:02.540] Um, the one is called, Here Comes the Sun, it's solar-powered, and you leave it on your porch all day. [17:03.260 --> 17:04.740] Maybe this is the solution. [17:04.940 --> 17:07.800] So, there's also more fancy versions of that inside of the Internet. [17:07.820 --> 17:10.560] There is the solar powered micro kitty. [17:11.240 --> 17:14.960] Um, so, there is a lot of innovations out there. [17:15.160 --> 17:17.820] And as I always say, nature is healing. [17:18.280 --> 17:22.900] Um, may your healing crystals protect you during this trying time, of course. [17:23.620 --> 17:28.220] And as always, talking about that time, I found a glass dildo on the beach. [17:28.420 --> 17:30.280] Nature is healing itself. [17:31.100 --> 17:31.700] Yeah. [17:32.800 --> 17:35.320] Um, yeah. [17:36.020 --> 17:41.920] Uh, let's now go a little bit into, uh, something also interesting. [17:42.180 --> 17:51.720] Um, because when we think now of online porn and online platforms, we have to talk about MindGeek, which is now called Elo. [17:52.440 --> 18:00.560] And, uh, this one camp company, uh, owns and controls over 160 adult websites. [18:00.820 --> 18:04.660] That includes, for example, PornHub, Brassers, RedTube, and many, many more. [18:05.220 --> 18:06.500] So, 161. [18:07.240 --> 18:13.280] It's, um, of course, one of the top five bandwidth consumers on the whole planet. [18:13.700 --> 18:22.020] Um, and this means like, uh, your or mine or our little horny moment is part of a massive digital industrial complex. [18:22.300 --> 18:27.640] So, MindGeek is, yeah, really a big, big monopoly that they own. [18:27.800 --> 18:32.420] Uh, there are some private companies out there, but not that much anymore. [18:33.780 --> 18:42.620] And yeah, so just as you can see, uh, let's go maybe to the carbon cost of pleasure, because I was quite interested in that one. [18:42.880 --> 18:48.360] Uh, our sexuality, like everything else has an ecological impact. [18:49.000 --> 18:55.140] And, um, that impact doesn't come just from what we do, but from how we consume. [18:55.460 --> 18:56.080] This is important. [18:56.360 --> 18:59.180] So, let's take maybe a closer look at that. [18:59.440 --> 19:03.640] And let's talk about the carbon footprint, um, of porn. [19:03.900 --> 19:12.340] So, when we, uh, often think of porn as intangible, streaming, cloud-based, just a few tabs away. [19:12.700 --> 19:17.140] Uh, but as you all know, there is no such thing as the cloud. [19:17.440 --> 19:23.980] It's just someone else's computer in a very large and very energy-hungry building. [19:24.940 --> 19:28.540] And we still have to, uh, always think about this. [19:29.920 --> 19:34.020] So, when we think about VHS tapes, for example, let's rewind, yeah? [19:34.520 --> 19:36.260] Pornography used to be physical. [19:36.420 --> 19:41.120] There were magazines, there were VHS tapes, DVDs, uh, there was a lot out there. [19:41.260 --> 19:47.780] And of course, all of that came with their own environmental costs, like plastic, transport, and production. [19:48.900 --> 19:51.000] And today most porn, of course, lives online. [19:51.200 --> 19:56.120] And we assume that this is greener, but digital, digital doesn't mean clean. [19:56.520 --> 20:10.760] So, one study, for example, estimated that if Pornhub streams and video as efficiently as Netflix, uh, it will, it still uses up to six million kilowatt hours per year. [20:11.520 --> 20:15.580] And that's enough energy to power Luxembourg for several days. [20:16.000 --> 20:17.460] That's a country in Europe. [20:17.940 --> 20:20.820] Um, so, that's just one side. [20:21.340 --> 20:28.140] Uh, but if you think this is just like one, as a Pornhub is the only thing we can get data out of because they are very open with their data. [20:28.320 --> 20:36.800] But if you think of the 160 something platforms that I talked beforehand about, you have to really, like, multiply, multiply, multiply. [20:37.760 --> 20:43.460] So, of course, and plus the devices we use to watch, like download, swipe, scroll, and all of that. [20:44.060 --> 20:46.980] So, it's quite a lot, of course. [20:47.240 --> 20:50.300] So, behind your orgasm is a server farm. [20:50.920 --> 20:56.500] Um, and often, of course, it is cooled by air conditioning and powered by non-renewables. [20:57.160 --> 21:02.660] So, this invisible, uh, there is an invisible footprint of pleasure. [21:03.440 --> 21:08.180] And unlike, uh, and used condom, you can't just throw it in the bin and forget about it. [21:08.320 --> 21:11.060] Uh, I think we really should think about this. [21:12.040 --> 21:18.120] Um, another thing, um, that I stumbled across, um, it's also an interesting project. [21:18.400 --> 21:23.000] It's called, uh, one of, it's one of Pornhub's green campaigns. [21:23.580 --> 21:28.020] And it was called, Pornhub Gives America Wood. [21:28.440 --> 21:38.260] And it aimed to plant a tree for every hundred videos that were viewed in a category which was called Big Dick. [21:38.920 --> 21:42.720] So, was this really social responsibility? [21:43.200 --> 21:45.360] Was it just a clever marketing stunt? [21:45.640 --> 21:47.900] I mean, at least they tried. [21:48.260 --> 21:50.660] But it does raise an important question. [21:51.280 --> 21:54.780] Can giant Porn platforms actually go green? [21:55.080 --> 21:57.340] Or is this just eco-washing? [21:57.920 --> 22:02.460] But at least, uh, they planted some trees and it's not, uh, it's not like less. [22:02.680 --> 22:09.700] It's like 15,473 trees were planted. [22:10.100 --> 22:13.200] So, you can imagine how many Big Dick videos have been watched. [22:15.360 --> 22:18.880] So, let's maybe go a little bit to, uh, newer developments. [22:19.760 --> 22:21.340] So, we had the VHS. [22:21.680 --> 22:22.600] We had the DVDs. [22:22.740 --> 22:24.840] We had, we talked already about the tube sites. [22:25.360 --> 22:28.820] And now we are at AI-generated porn. [22:29.120 --> 22:33.360] I just wanted to give you also, like, uh, like a short timeline about this. [22:33.820 --> 22:44.860] In 2010, uh, was the first AI experiments that landed in adult content and appeared like in small kind of artworks and stuff like that. [22:45.060 --> 22:53.500] In 2020, it was, um, possible to generate a highly realistic AI-generated porn. [22:53.720 --> 22:55.000] So, this was already possible. [22:55.340 --> 23:05.820] And in 2020, uh, 2022, sorry, as a stable diffusion, uh, was released, uh, this sparked a really massive growth of AI porn. [23:05.960 --> 23:08.940] It was like, uh, a porn explosion again. [23:09.440 --> 23:14.480] So, and in 2023, a lot of platforms established, uh, themselves. [23:14.880 --> 23:24.960] And they offer, like, uh, for example, a fully customized, uh, AI-porn service that, for example, you can create the porn in any way what you want. [23:25.120 --> 23:32.000] Like, the humans, uh, or people or whatever is inside can be really customized to your desires. [23:32.940 --> 23:36.780] Like, some of the names are, like, Porn Journey, Porn Pen, Porn Joy, and whatever. [23:37.840 --> 23:39.840] So, where are we right now? [23:40.000 --> 23:57.840] There is this massive wave of new AI porn that kind of blends, uh, deep fakes that are existing out there, non-consensual content out there, generative AI porn out there that also already exists, and, of course, there's still existing on an explicit material. [23:58.360 --> 24:05.060] And I still want to remind everybody that, uh, from, uh, deep fake we have quite, uh, some statistics. [24:05.780 --> 24:13.400] Uh, 96% of all deep fakes online are pornographic, and 99% of those target women. [24:13.680 --> 24:20.000] So, all of that evolves and makes this new blob of new AI porn. [24:22.080 --> 24:39.620] And, um, when we talk about AI porn, I think we also should, uh, also talk about data security and copyright, because, uh, a lot of AI models were trained on explicit images of the Internet, and, of course, uh, they show misogyny, rape, abusive imagery, [24:39.920 --> 24:48.140] and even, uh, CSAM, so child sex abuse material was found inside of some of the training data sets. [24:48.360 --> 24:50.500] I mean, this is like, what should I say? [24:51.100 --> 25:01.100] Um, um, and another point is that many AI models are trained on copyrighted porn without permission, of course. [25:01.340 --> 25:18.420] So, there are already many, many, many lawsuits, uh, going on, and many lawsuits, for example, there's, uh, one, get the images versus stability AI, they are testing if fair use applies, and I'm sure all of you know what that could mean. [25:18.720 --> 25:23.680] So, this is what we are... what is the statute of right now? [25:24.560 --> 25:28.080] Um, the environmental footprint. [25:28.240 --> 25:33.820] Let's maybe go back to that with a little bit more, because I don't want to dive too deep into deepfakes and all that stuff. [25:34.060 --> 25:36.380] This would be a lecture of its own. [25:37.230 --> 25:40.140] So, the environmental footprint. [25:40.580 --> 25:43.420] Um, there is some data already out there. [25:44.080 --> 25:50.720] Uh, training an AI model produces around 283 tons of carbon dioxide. [25:51.200 --> 26:02.340] This means, uh, or it's like the same like 300 round-trip flights between New York and San Francisco, or nearly five times of the lifetime emissions of, uh, the average car. [26:02.600 --> 26:11.780] Uh, GPT-3, for example, training cost about 552, uh, tons of carbon dioxide, so almost double, uh, the thing. [26:11.980 --> 26:28.860] And one study even suggests that by 2027, the energy costs for AI could increase, uh, to, uh, almost nearly 0.5% of all current electricity usage that we as human beings have. [26:29.720 --> 26:34.420] And one thing that is, uh, not very often talked about or ignored in a discussion. [26:34.600 --> 26:36.320] This is like water consumption. [26:36.720 --> 26:52.560] Uh, also like projected global, uh, studies say that, uh, AI water use, uh, uh, the water use will be around, let's say something like 4.2 or 6.6 billion cubic meters. [26:52.960 --> 26:58.700] This would, uh, also by 2027 be more than the UK's total annual withdrawal. [26:59.740 --> 27:01.000] Also some figures. [27:01.460 --> 27:05.500] But these are the data that can be found online. [27:05.840 --> 27:09.000] And that's pretty much where my own knowledge ends. [27:09.440 --> 27:14.020] So that's also a bit of a question I want to turn back to the audience, uh, today. [27:14.520 --> 27:18.340] Like, does anyone know more about this or have more precise figures? [27:18.600 --> 27:26.500] Or perhaps has someone an idea on how one might calculate the environmental footprint of AI generated porn, uh, specifically? [27:26.600 --> 27:28.360] This would be really of great interest to me. [27:28.580 --> 27:33.940] Or if there were newer sources or insights on this, I'd really be curious to hear all about that. [27:34.100 --> 27:39.160] And we can definitely open up the discussion after the end of the lecture. [27:39.560 --> 27:43.280] I would love to create, uh, this space of exchange at the end. [27:44.180 --> 27:45.600] Um, yeah. [27:46.600 --> 27:49.240] But let's go back to this one question. [27:49.560 --> 27:53.200] So should we stop watching porn? [27:54.140 --> 27:55.640] What do we do with this information? [27:56.140 --> 27:59.360] Um, I say no, it's not the point. [27:59.860 --> 28:02.480] Uh, porn is definitely not the enemy. [28:03.440 --> 28:05.340] Unreflective consumption is. [28:05.480 --> 28:12.180] Uh, the same way we think about fast fashion or industrial meat, we need to think about fast porn. [28:12.900 --> 28:16.200] And there are so many other things that you can explore. [28:16.320 --> 28:20.060] For example, there is so much feminist and queer porn already out there. [28:20.300 --> 28:25.700] So I want to quote, uh, Annie Sprinkle, again, uh, the mother of post-porn also. [28:25.960 --> 28:33.000] She always used to say the answer to bad porn is not no porn, but is to try and make better porn. [28:33.160 --> 28:35.540] And I could not agree more to that. [28:35.980 --> 28:42.080] And of course, I created a little bit of like a green your pleasure, um, checklist for you. [28:42.360 --> 28:54.260] So instead of abstinence, I suggest awareness, try for example, ethical porn sites that pay creators, fair trade, sex toys, and lube, uh, solar powered vibrators. [28:54.400 --> 28:55.320] Yes, they exist. [28:55.500 --> 28:56.500] So why not use them? [28:56.900 --> 29:01.100] And reflecting on where your data and your desire is going. [29:01.300 --> 29:03.320] It's not about being perfect. [29:03.320 --> 29:05.160] It's about being conscious. [29:05.660 --> 29:13.820] And so now that we know how porn impacts the planet, let's ask something maybe a little bit deeper. [29:13.820 --> 29:20.640] How does it impact us, our bodies, our identities, and our fantasies? [29:21.960 --> 29:28.100] So imagine a world where we all... Let's pause for a second, yeah? [29:28.180 --> 29:29.020] Take a deep breath. [29:29.400 --> 29:29.760] Imagine. [29:30.680 --> 29:37.940] What would the world look like if we all consumed ethical, inclusive, empowering porn? [29:38.660 --> 29:41.620] What if our fantasies were sustainable? [29:42.040 --> 29:47.760] Not just for the environment, but for our bodies, our relationships, and our communities? [29:48.480 --> 29:51.020] Um, there is much we know about it already. [29:51.120 --> 29:52.000] There are a lot of studies. [29:52.340 --> 29:53.280] So satisfaction. [29:54.540 --> 30:00.460] Um, studies show that watching porn, uh, really can increase your overall satisfaction. [30:01.200 --> 30:04.200] Um, and turns out, yeah, pleasure is good for us. [30:04.420 --> 30:07.200] Or masturbation is self-care. [30:07.840 --> 30:10.220] Especially when it's guilt-free and shame-free. [30:10.340 --> 30:11.540] It's an act of self-care. [30:11.700 --> 30:12.580] It's stress relief. [30:12.760 --> 30:13.600] It helps you sleep. [30:13.600 --> 30:14.280] It's free. [30:14.280 --> 30:17.440] It doesn't require you to do whatever. [30:17.720 --> 30:26.500] So, uh, in a world full of burn-ups and really bad news, uh, I think a little bit of self-love can really, uh, go a long way. [30:27.380 --> 30:30.260] Kink diversity is more acceptance. [30:30.680 --> 30:33.480] Good porn helps us normalize desire. [30:34.260 --> 30:36.400] You like dressing up as a werewolf? [30:36.660 --> 30:37.660] Um, okay, cool. [30:37.920 --> 30:39.760] You want to get off to lamps? [30:40.120 --> 30:41.800] Okay, no judgment, yeah? [30:42.400 --> 30:44.300] Uh, Johannes, you're into trains. [30:44.600 --> 30:45.900] Uh, choo-choo, baby, yeah? [30:46.140 --> 30:46.540] Do it. [30:46.680 --> 30:47.400] Go for it, yeah? [30:47.800 --> 30:54.500] The more we explore our kinks and quirks, the more tolerant we become of others. [30:54.980 --> 30:56.280] Desire is weird. [30:56.440 --> 30:57.740] Desire is wild. [30:58.060 --> 30:59.720] And that's really beautiful. [31:00.980 --> 31:03.900] Um, diverse bodies are diverse futures. [31:04.200 --> 31:11.440] Imagine having access to porn that reflects you, your body, your identity, and your preferences. [31:11.960 --> 31:17.500] Uh, where you're not just like a category, but you're a whole person. [31:17.840 --> 31:20.820] And this kind of porn already exists out there. [31:21.020 --> 31:24.700] There is this indie, feminist, queer, body positive, hairy porn. [31:25.040 --> 31:27.000] You just have to go looking. [31:27.240 --> 31:33.180] And when we can, and when we demand this kind of porn, I think we can also help it grow. [31:33.760 --> 31:36.300] And of course, sexual self-discovery. [31:36.520 --> 31:39.480] Ethical porn is also a kind of a mirror. [31:39.700 --> 31:42.560] It helps you figure out what turns you on. [31:42.740 --> 31:48.720] It gives you tools to communicate your desires, to build content, to try new things. [31:48.960 --> 31:55.160] And when that happens, your sex life gets better, and confidence gets stronger, and your relationships get deeper. [31:55.720 --> 32:00.340] And of course, for me, porn is always entertainment. [32:01.280 --> 32:03.280] Uh, it's just a simple truth. [32:03.580 --> 32:05.760] Um, and this can be a lot of empowerment. [32:06.180 --> 32:09.420] And I think entertainment is sometimes really just enough. [32:10.080 --> 32:11.320] So, yeah. [32:12.180 --> 32:18.140] Um, my final message to you would be, of course, may the fuck be with you. [32:18.640 --> 32:24.580] Um, the wiser the choice, the better porn can be lustful, honest, and empowering. [32:24.580 --> 32:34.560] It's up to us as consumers, as creators, and as lovers to make porn, uh, part of the world that we actually want to live in. [32:34.940 --> 32:37.440] Porn, for me, is always room for possibilities. [32:37.920 --> 32:39.840] Because it's not just about sex. [32:39.960 --> 32:41.640] It's about how we treat each other. [32:41.740 --> 32:43.600] It's about how we treat the planet. [32:44.700 --> 32:46.160] So, um, yeah. [32:46.360 --> 32:48.320] I think I'm at the end of my sheet. [32:48.620 --> 32:53.260] And maybe let's open up a round of discussions and comments. [32:53.480 --> 32:56.040] And let's, uh, create something, maybe, together. [32:56.260 --> 32:58.880] I kind of, like, had some few questions out there. [32:59.600 --> 33:02.360] Um, whoever wants to say something to that. [33:02.360 --> 33:05.920] I would be really, really interested to see that. [33:06.220 --> 33:06.280] Yeah. [33:16.260 --> 33:16.900] Yeah. [33:19.080 --> 33:20.060] Come forward. [33:21.060 --> 33:22.020] Come forward. [33:22.200 --> 33:23.420] I'm curious already. [33:23.800 --> 33:23.800] Yeah. [33:28.280 --> 33:38.460] Okay, um, on the power thing, six hundred, six million, uh, kilowatt hours per year isn't actually all that much. [33:38.820 --> 33:49.440] If you divide by three, six, five, divide by 24, that's only 650 tero-, 650 kilowatt. [33:50.020 --> 33:58.680] Now, one Vestas halide X, so one halide X, uh, turbine, 15 megawatts. [34:00.360 --> 34:03.200] So, if you do the math, you know, that's 30 million. [34:03.600 --> 34:03.680] Yeah. [34:04.240 --> 34:09.720] Only one turbine will power all of Pornhub ten times over. [34:09.940 --> 34:11.580] So, that's the good news. [34:12.540 --> 34:20.300] Small bit of bad news is their distribution isn't going to be anywhere like as efficient as Netflix. [34:21.160 --> 34:25.200] Because Netflix, everybody's asking for the same thing. [34:25.200 --> 34:32.080] And so, we have these content delivery systems that move the content close to the consumers. [34:33.000 --> 34:37.180] So, you don't need to be worried about the electricity thing. [34:37.640 --> 34:45.560] But, there is a bit that really does anger me when we get the, you know, because, you know, it's a narrative that's being pushed at us. [34:45.940 --> 34:46.820] You know, porn is bad. [34:47.340 --> 34:55.920] When I was at Oxford, that was when it was still illegal to have homosexual sex if you were under 21. [34:56.340 --> 34:57.820] It was criminalized. [34:58.340 --> 35:14.200] And so, there was a club at Oxford for the graduates of, uh, certain well-known public schools, uh, whose, uh, members had, uh, got the taste for, uh, gay sex, a straight. [35:15.300 --> 35:25.720] And so, they joined the club to have sex with each other, all the while supporting the Tory party, criminalizing it for everybody else. [35:26.220 --> 35:28.580] Name of that club, the Bullingdon Club. [35:29.180 --> 35:33.020] Boris Johnson, David Cameron, were members. [35:34.140 --> 35:44.500] And so, the point that I'm making here is, the people in power will set the rules up for themselves in an entirely hypocritical way. [35:44.740 --> 35:51.840] And what they really want to do is to stop us from talking about the fact that they are doing the same things. [35:55.480 --> 35:55.920] Yep. [35:59.980 --> 36:02.240] Um, yeah. [36:03.120 --> 36:10.740] So, uh, uh, uh, uh, preface this, I'm not anti-porn at all, but I do have a couple of questions that were some concerns that raised. [36:10.940 --> 36:15.680] So, you talked a lot about, uh, ethical, positive porn, uh, and fantasies. [36:15.880 --> 36:21.820] Uh, the question is, to what extent do you think that people can kind of control or modify their fantasies? [36:21.920 --> 36:26.380] I mean, there are people whose fantasies may be violent or may be disturbing. [36:26.680 --> 36:33.500] Um, and, uh, to what extent, again, in your opinion, does consumption kind of foster it? [36:33.720 --> 36:42.360] Or does that give them kind of a safe outlet to fantasize about something that they wouldn't, we wouldn't want them to do in real life? [36:42.560 --> 36:50.260] You know, some of the, I don't know, S&M stuff can be pretty extreme, uh, and not just physically, but can be degrading and all that kind of stuff. [36:50.720 --> 36:51.720] So that's question number one. [36:52.140 --> 37:15.720] Question number two is, uh, about, and I apologize, I'm a Gen X-er, but to what extent, as AI becomes more realistic and lifelike, do you think that that could take away from actual physical relationships and interaction with people when you can get so much of that in a much more kind of lifelike? [37:15.840 --> 37:34.540] And, you know, we all know that, uh, AI tends to be a people pleaser, uh, you know, so maybe it's easier to have a relationship with something that is, uh, AI than it is with, you know, someone who has their own opinions and, you know, their own kind of positive and negative aspects. [37:34.720 --> 37:36.520] So a couple of questions. [37:36.800 --> 37:38.260] Yeah, really interesting ones. [37:38.440 --> 37:42.380] So, um, well, let's, uh, dive maybe into the second one first. [37:42.640 --> 37:47.180] Uh, last year I showed here a movie which was called Musings of a Mechatronic Mistress. [37:47.180 --> 37:49.560] It was about sex roboters. [37:50.220 --> 38:04.420] And, uh, I, uh, show this movie quite often and, uh, this is one of the questions I often get, like, um, when we have, like, this, uh, it's not only sex roboters, but there is virtual girlfriends and boyfriends. [38:04.720 --> 38:06.840] There is so much stuff out there already. [38:06.840 --> 38:16.580] And, uh, of course, it tends to be very, I mean, we see it sometimes even with, uh, JGPD and all this text generating things, they are very affirmative and very positive always. [38:16.980 --> 38:20.040] They, uh, kind of try to, to really do that. [38:20.380 --> 38:26.880] And, yeah, this, this will be... I, I don't know what will be the consequences in future of that one. [38:27.020 --> 38:30.420] I'm also quite curious about when, uh, about that. [38:30.420 --> 38:36.780] Does it really lead, uh, to, uh, maybe, uh, uh, not, uh, a worse communication among people? [38:36.900 --> 38:38.420] I'm, I, I really can't say it. [38:38.520 --> 38:42.140] And, uh, because, you know, I'm also, like, 46 years old. [38:42.340 --> 38:45.940] Uh, I've seen all the technical stuff from, from another perspective. [38:45.940 --> 38:52.040] But children growing up with these and teenagers growing up with all of these possibilities that we have here. [38:52.560 --> 38:56.780] Well, that's, it's like hard to say, uh, what it will foster. [38:57.620 --> 39:13.520] Um, yeah, but, uh, I think the, the better it is to really talk about this really opening and really bring this into discussions and conversations because, and not to put it away in a corner of shame and taboo and you cannot talk about, uh, sex robots, [39:13.880 --> 39:15.800] uh, homosexuality, whatever it is. [39:16.280 --> 39:21.600] Um, I think the more open we are, the more open can be, and realistic can be discussions. [39:22.460 --> 39:33.440] And there are a lot of different studies out there concerning, um, how you may be profit or totally not profit from, uh, watching porn. [39:33.560 --> 39:37.160] It's like, really, it, it goes on the far end of each other. [39:37.740 --> 39:43.640] Um, of course, I like, or I tend to be at the very more positive side. [39:43.780 --> 39:47.200] As I said, for me, it can be a room for possibilities. [39:47.480 --> 39:50.540] Uh, for example, uh, you mentioned BDSM culture. [39:50.840 --> 40:07.280] And for me, one possibility would be, for example, okay, I, I, I think now about suffocation, um, things inside of my, uh, sexual acts and I don't want to try it maybe like, but maybe just, just watch it beforehand. [40:07.640 --> 40:10.400] And for me, porn is always just a fantasy. [40:10.700 --> 40:13.560] It's nothing I have to inact all the way. [40:13.700 --> 40:14.680] It's just a fantasy. [40:14.920 --> 40:19.720] It's just like, um, um, a ventile, something that, uh, that gets out. [40:19.920 --> 40:24.000] Uh, and, um, we know a lot about why people watch porn. [40:24.300 --> 40:26.980] And it's mostly not about horniness. [40:26.980 --> 40:35.500] It's about being alone, being depressed, or just doing kind of like a theme of stress relief. [40:35.760 --> 40:55.360] So, um, I think this is, yeah, we will see where this will go, but I think the more important it is to talk also openly about all of this, uh, especially for example, with teenagers or in school that, uh, can be, um, kind of like, um, uh, opposed to all of this. [40:55.580 --> 41:07.780] Uh, so for, as I often say that, I think there was this word of like, how was it, um, I have to remember to, um, um, uh, to have like a porn literacy. [41:08.340 --> 41:21.460] Uh, but I think it's not about having porn literacy, but, but I think our children and teenagers should have like media literacy too, because when I sometimes open up Instagram, I'm like, wow, the things you see there. [41:21.600 --> 41:35.620] And of course, we can also see, uh, with the AI generated porn, a lot of it flushes back into Instagram, not into full, uh, explicit intent, but into luring people to somewhere, to some other, uh, platforms and basis. [41:36.140 --> 41:42.100] So I think, yeah, this would be kind of my, my, my answer to that or my, my status on that one. [41:43.980 --> 41:44.800] Yes, of course. [41:45.000 --> 41:45.280] Hello. [41:45.660 --> 41:52.140] I, um, I had no idea you existed until this week, and I'm so stoked to meet you and hear your work. [41:52.580 --> 42:05.440] Um, I, there, this touches on so many things that I'm very passionate about and the way you've organized it, uh, and, and interrogated it and instigated with it, I think is positively beautiful. [42:06.300 --> 42:13.240] Uh, I, uh, currently researching and organizing a series of salons on sexuality in the age of AI. [42:13.560 --> 42:24.760] And so I'm gonna come up and ask you a bunch of questions or exchange info, but I'd love for you to talk on the, the kind of, uh, almost contradictory loop, right? [42:24.760 --> 42:38.980] Um, there are fantasies we might not have access to with other people in our life, uh, that a program, an AI program, a, uh, virtual reality might be able to support. [42:39.380 --> 42:47.160] Uh, and there's some, I think, ethical positivity arguments for that, as well as the doom and gloom arguments around that. [42:47.320 --> 43:06.880] And so, given that conscious reflection on our porn consumption is something that matters a lot to you and it matters a lot to me, I'd be curious about how you kind of find your edges of like, ooh, when might this be a good use case for someone, uh, who wants to experience certain, [43:07.640 --> 43:13.620] not only fantasies, but maybe body possibilities, uh, that might not exist for them. [43:13.940 --> 43:24.100] Uh, and then when is it, uh, start to like, hmm, however, without just kind of spiraling, uh, even my question spirals around itself. [43:24.260 --> 43:28.520] So I was hoping I could get your thoughts on, on, on where you find those lines. [43:29.820 --> 43:31.980] Yeah, I mean, this is always a hard one. [43:32.160 --> 43:37.760] Um, I will, maybe I want to come back on, on kind of what you were asking before. [43:37.940 --> 43:44.180] Uh, this room for possibility, for example, um, I live in Austria, I'm a privileged white person. [43:44.820 --> 43:54.760] Um, but if, uh, I look, for example, some hundred kilometers away from me, there's, for example, uh, there are LGBTQ free zones already in Poland. [43:55.060 --> 44:03.720] Uh, and when we talk about Chechnya, uh, I don't even want to talk about this because it's so horrible, uh, what, uh, queer people have to experience there. [44:04.140 --> 44:11.600] Um, so of course, it can also be room for possibility to see something that you, in your state, in your nation, not allowed to. [44:12.180 --> 44:20.120] And coming back maybe a little bit close to what I am doing, I'm running a poem film festival now for, uh, I think at the ninth year already. [44:20.880 --> 44:34.300] And, uh, of course, we kind of developed standards, what we want to screen and want to see, and all of that is, of course, uh, queer feminist-based, uh, as, as a total, I would say, we want diversity, we want to showcase a lot of different bodies. [44:34.300 --> 44:47.120] We want to, uh, really see where this can, uh, bring us something really positive and empower us as human beings, and not just put us in a shame corner of taboo and not talking about it anymore. [44:47.300 --> 44:51.720] But, of course, as a festival, you always have kind of standards, uh, that you want to live up to. [44:51.980 --> 45:03.020] There is, uh, a big selection team, for example, that, uh, pre, uh, pre-watches the movies and makes note on them, and we have a lot of discussion, uh, on what comes out of it. [45:03.120 --> 45:06.460] But it is, I mean, it's immense what is out there. [45:06.600 --> 45:07.660] It's so huge. [45:07.860 --> 45:14.280] There is so many cool, funky, artsy, uh, very politically porn also out there. [45:14.380 --> 45:18.200] So, like, porn with really, uh, uh, precise political messages. [45:18.200 --> 45:19.560] There is so much out there. [45:19.760 --> 45:25.680] And this is why I'm doing this, uh, to take away a little bit of that and showcase that there is another solution. [45:25.880 --> 45:30.700] But, of course, I'm just, like, a little bit of a sand corn in the universe, maybe. [45:30.960 --> 45:32.100] But, yeah, let's see. [45:32.340 --> 45:34.020] I'll, I'll try to change society. [45:34.480 --> 45:34.960] Beautiful. [45:35.180 --> 45:35.540] Thank you. [45:36.280 --> 45:36.520] Yeah. [45:37.460 --> 45:45.680] Um, uh, I had, uh, I wanted to ask your thoughts on kind of two topics and their ecological, uh, and ethical impact. [45:45.980 --> 45:53.180] Uh, one of those is sex toys, um, which in my experience, the vast majority are very low quality. [45:53.180 --> 45:59.360] Uh, and so that presumably produces a lot of waste and a lot of, uh, manufacturing, uh, waste. [45:59.720 --> 46:07.960] Um, and, uh, the other topic is that all of these porn streaming sites, their main economic model is based on advertising. [46:08.320 --> 46:20.880] And the advertisements are also, in my experience, extremely low quality, um, and have their own, uh, you know, uh, ethical issues as far as the content that they present or funnel people towards. [46:21.220 --> 46:25.540] Um, and also potential data privacy concerns, right? [46:25.840 --> 46:28.180] Um, I'm just interested in your thoughts on those topics. [46:28.440 --> 46:29.800] Uh, yes, yes, yes. [46:29.920 --> 46:30.720] And yes to everything. [46:31.380 --> 46:32.420] Uh, totally. [46:32.560 --> 46:42.300] I mean, there is, uh, a good trend out there of, like, doing sustainable sex toys and, uh, rethinking those things a little bit more. [46:42.800 --> 46:46.300] So as I even showcase, there is even, like, womanize as a big, big brand. [46:46.520 --> 46:49.180] Uh, so even they are thinking about it. [46:49.280 --> 46:59.000] But, you know, as it is with late capitalism, it always searches its way to, through fence and niches and tries to scrape the rest out of it. [46:59.180 --> 47:04.300] So, uh, I think we can't escape, uh, capitalism and we can't escape patriarchy. [47:04.700 --> 47:05.320] Hell no. [47:05.720 --> 47:07.040] But yeah, it's also hell, yeah. [47:07.700 --> 47:11.440] Um, but yeah, let's see what we can make out of this, yeah. [47:11.580 --> 47:17.320] Do you have any, uh, any data about ecological impact of those arenas? [47:17.840 --> 47:19.240] The sex toys and the advertising? [47:19.400 --> 47:20.080] Not so much. [47:20.220 --> 47:20.740] Not so much. [47:20.940 --> 47:28.980] Because they are just emerging in the last few years and, of course, there is not that much of interest in, like, researching this. [47:29.140 --> 47:32.880] And especially universities are very conservative in most of the cases. [47:32.880 --> 47:36.840] They don't, uh, even want to have, like, those topics inside of the university. [47:36.940 --> 47:40.260] So, I often stumble upon this myself. [47:41.160 --> 47:49.200] So, um, it's quite hard to do, uh, research out there and to really persuade people, hey, we have to look at this because we all profit from, maybe, uh, insights. [47:49.200 --> 47:51.020] But, let's see, yeah. [47:51.180 --> 47:52.860] Maybe somebody comes up with something, yeah. [47:53.060 --> 47:55.140] I did see one awareness campaign. [47:55.460 --> 48:05.280] There was a sex toy, it was a company that sex toys, and to raise awareness about how they don't really break down, you can't recycle them. [48:06.020 --> 48:22.340] I, I can look it up, I will tell you, but there was one awareness campaign I was heard, I heard of this person out of Detroit in the States gathered, uh, paired with a bunch of sex toy shops and said, hey, I'll take your old sex toys to make this project about recyclability. [48:22.500 --> 48:24.280] But that's literally the one thing I heard of. [48:24.460 --> 48:31.400] I think there's even a company that kind of where you can buy, uh, used sex toys to reuse them again. [48:33.220 --> 48:34.340] I just heard that. [48:35.720 --> 48:36.200] Yeah. [48:37.200 --> 48:49.860] So, as, uh, as hackers, we often come to the, uh, to, to meet together on the basis of, uh, sharing information, freeing information, providing access to information. [48:50.340 --> 49:04.300] But, uh, when we think about fantasies and desires, that, uh, sounds to me, it's not something that was addressed during your, your presentation, but it sounds to me as something that is actually coming more from, uh, shaded areas, from unanswered questions, [49:05.060 --> 49:07.720] uh, sometimes even from the, from the forbidden. [49:08.400 --> 49:29.460] And, uh, and so I w I was wondering what, what is your perspective of how we can leverage the technologies and the information that we have to actually, uh, create these shaded areas, or if we go, we can go without shaded areas at all, and especially how we can then move these fantasies onto the [49:29.460 --> 49:30.340] political sphere. [49:31.800 --> 49:42.600] Yeah, I mean, this, this actually was one of the questions I also wanted to ask back, like, how, uh, what can we do, uh, what kind of sex activism we can, like, uh, create? [49:42.800 --> 49:56.620] Is there some, something open-source we can create or some kind of, like, um, in Austria we talked quite often if, if there should be something like, um, a kind of, uh, a good, a good signal, Johannes, in, in English. [49:58.280 --> 50:07.180] Yeah, this would also be interesting, for example, for sex toys or stuff like that, to have, like, really, uh, produced on, on this kind of level. [50:07.400 --> 50:09.320] So, yeah, I don't know. [50:09.440 --> 50:11.960] This will, this is exactly my question back, actually, yeah. [50:14.600 --> 50:22.640] Um, I mostly just had a comment, and, um, I just wanted to say I appreciate the bringing out of the shadows and detaching the shame. [50:23.000 --> 50:34.700] Um, you know, I can only speak of my American experience, but growing up, um, unfortunately, I had been exposed to pornography very early, and became kind of hypersexual and aware of sex at too early of an age. [50:35.020 --> 50:41.400] And it caused me a lot of trouble, uh, shame, uh, of my own human desire. [50:42.200 --> 50:49.080] And, you know, I'm getting over it, but it took a long time, because I was such a lust monster. [50:49.480 --> 51:05.280] And so, I just wanted to say that I just appreciate, um, you know, I, I, not to put it on you, uh, that I want, that we as a society hopefully shift, especially in America, certain different things, such as our views on sexuality versus violence. [51:05.500 --> 51:14.580] And also, too, we, we literally perform violent acts to our infants every day with the circumcising of males, um, which is not appropriate. [51:14.760 --> 51:17.060] And so, I just want us all to be aware of that. [51:17.960 --> 51:23.100] Um, I think you come, uh, to a very good, uh, good point. [51:23.320 --> 51:26.820] Uh, I mean, I think I could talk on, of course, for this, like, for hours. [51:27.020 --> 51:34.680] Uh, this is, uh, exactly what we could, uh, uh, what we would call, uh, body politics for, coined this, uh, term. [51:35.140 --> 51:47.680] And, uh, it always means that, like, the state, the nation, of course, has an interest in you as a human being, how sexual you are, and what kind of sexual desires you drive towards. [51:47.980 --> 51:54.220] So, they want to know about, like, how, uh, about birth control, who gets access to which kind of medicine. [51:54.520 --> 51:58.880] And, uh, so, a state always wants to predict the size of its states. [51:59.020 --> 52:01.700] And, of course, wants always to get bigger and not smaller. [52:01.940 --> 52:03.860] And this is exactly body politics. [52:03.980 --> 52:10.740] And this is also the reason why, uh, of course, uh, they wanted to be full of shame and not to be talked about. [52:11.000 --> 52:13.020] Because then we would talk about things like that. [52:13.780 --> 52:14.140] So, yeah. [52:14.860 --> 52:15.060] Totally. [52:15.340 --> 52:15.400] Yes. [52:15.580 --> 52:15.600] Yeah. [52:16.460 --> 52:18.340] So, I think, are we at the end? [52:18.740 --> 52:19.340] May I ask a question? [52:20.040 --> 52:20.280] Yeah. [52:21.120 --> 52:21.880] Five minutes. [52:22.560 --> 52:23.060] Yeah. [52:23.060 --> 52:23.100] Yeah. [52:23.480 --> 52:23.660] Cool. [52:24.000 --> 52:24.700] Five more minutes. [52:25.360 --> 52:26.060] Let's use it. [52:26.140 --> 52:26.780] Ah, there you are. [52:26.940 --> 52:27.080] Sorry. [52:27.320 --> 52:27.320] Hello. [52:27.960 --> 52:38.260] Um, so, I have two questions about, uh, compensatory mechanisms and balancing two different analyses of things. [52:38.580 --> 52:42.220] So, one is that you've talked a lot about centralized infrastructure for the distribution of pornography. [52:42.520 --> 52:44.760] But, porn can also be obtained through piracy. [52:47.360 --> 52:49.480] Pornography can also be obtained through piracy. [52:50.440 --> 53:06.040] And it is possible to construct mechanisms whereby, every time, pornography is viewed, even if through the pursuit of novelty from centralized sites owned by that particular Canadian firm, it is also scraped from the browser to local storage and then automatically pirated. [53:06.240 --> 53:11.260] And that would be a technical means of substantially reducing its carbon footprint and the monopoly of that company. [53:12.540 --> 53:17.820] Not particularly advocating you do it by tomorrow, because that would violate the principle that I can't advocate for imminent lawless action. [53:17.940 --> 53:19.960] But you should totally do that sometime, non-specifically. [53:20.900 --> 53:24.500] Um, the other, uh, thing though is, sorry, that was a statement. [53:24.680 --> 53:26.000] Uh, this is more of a question. [53:26.240 --> 53:49.000] Um, is there any analysis that you know of, the carbon footprint or other energy analysis of the pornography industry in comparison to what one would sociologically model sexual behavior to look like of the society were that not to occur? [53:49.260 --> 54:09.240] For example, more babies who then end up using AIs flying around the planet having destructive jobs or people flying around to meet their lovers or driving from the suburb to the city to go to a club and go to an extremely damaging bar that's not environmentally friendly at all and gives out plastic [54:09.240 --> 54:10.420] cups per night. [54:10.600 --> 54:14.640] That's a lot more than your lifetime use of sex toys, unless you have a very good sex life. [54:15.620 --> 54:20.900] And also, what about all the wars that are made in the name of, you know, men who have problems? [54:21.320 --> 54:24.080] So, is there any analysis of those balances? [54:24.340 --> 54:26.720] Because it's not just either there's porn or there's nothing. [54:26.840 --> 54:29.360] There's either porn or a whole lot of other things going on. [54:30.320 --> 54:35.800] I think, no, there is not, but I think you should take on this topic, and this is what I'm suggesting. [54:36.060 --> 54:36.380] Thank you. [54:39.300 --> 54:40.380] One last question. [54:41.260 --> 54:45.960] It's not really a question either, so much as maybe a contribution to the discussion. [54:46.740 --> 54:55.180] But when you were speaking, and I think it was the first person's question around, and someone else's about, like, what shapes our desires? [54:55.420 --> 54:56.360] Can we change that? [54:56.840 --> 55:02.320] I often think about, like, maybe it's helpful also what we can do as hackers. [55:02.580 --> 55:18.620] It's thinking about, like, the systems we build and how much they are designed around exploiting existing desires versus questioning desires or introducing new things that we might not know that we desire. [55:18.960 --> 55:27.300] Or, I don't know, the way that, like, algorithms are shaping our visions of the world, and they're doing that. [55:27.420 --> 55:30.860] Like, there are powers at play that are doing that already to us. [55:30.900 --> 55:37.760] So, as hackers, what we might think about doing is shifting that in pro-social ways. [55:37.960 --> 56:01.320] And, yeah, I think a lot about, like, the systems, the algorithms, the, um, I don't know, just even content distribution systems, ways that we can disrupt what, like, you know, these profit-driven, um, and, like, yeah, extractive and exploitive, kind of male gaze-oriented, [56:01.660 --> 56:07.240] like, they're gonna keep playing to those desires as much as they possibly can and keep that flywheel going. [56:07.240 --> 56:17.940] But we can be glitches, both in the technical sense and in the embodied sense, by getting curious, like, wait, do I actually desire that? [56:18.180 --> 56:23.140] And, yeah, I think you speak to that a lot, but just wanted to double-click on it, I guess. [56:23.800 --> 56:30.120] Um, I think these are wonderful last words, uh, let's all be glitches, yeah, I like that one. [56:30.940 --> 56:31.600] One minute. [56:31.720 --> 56:37.860] One minute, so, yeah, there, there is, um, there's room for a comment. [56:39.540 --> 56:39.980] No? [56:40.940 --> 56:41.180] No? [56:43.980 --> 56:47.340] Yeah, then let's all be glitches, yeah, may the fuck be with you.
