[00:17.610 --> 00:25.850] And then I thought I would cover the last 10 years of computer science education, which is really when computer science education started to pick up as in the last 10 years. [00:47.590 --> 00:54.510] We're in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, which is like a sort of working class immigrant family historically neighborhood. [00:55.510 --> 01:01.470] So my nonprofit was founded to work with immigrant families, doing creative technology. [01:01.570 --> 01:07.430] I've been doing computer science education since 2008 on like a volunteer basis. [01:07.650 --> 01:11.730] And really 2012 is sort of like a serious thing. [01:12.570 --> 01:16.210] And then 2015 I think was when it became my full-time job. [01:17.330 --> 01:22.510] I teach around... I've taught over like 18,000 kids. [01:22.510 --> 01:29.670] I taught around 4,000 kids last year in engineering residencies in elementary schools. [01:29.950 --> 01:33.230] So typically I teach like robotics and creative technology. [01:33.570 --> 01:42.270] I very... I've been involved with things like HOPE and the maker movement for a very long time, EFF since like high school. [01:42.550 --> 01:46.130] And so this... I very much came to this from like a hacker mentality. [01:47.070 --> 01:48.410] And that's sort of my background. [01:48.670 --> 01:52.550] I also design curricula for the New York City Department of Education. [01:53.050 --> 01:56.430] They have a computer science for all movement, which we'll talk about in a moment. [01:56.630 --> 02:00.810] So I design elementary school education materials for them. [02:00.950 --> 02:10.670] If you have a child in New York City public school and elementary school, chances are if they're learning computer science, it's something that I may have taught or trained someone on to do. [02:14.070 --> 02:16.310] And so that brings me to this. [02:16.530 --> 02:20.350] A lot of this is New York City focused because that's where I'm based. [02:20.470 --> 02:24.750] But this curriculum that I'm writing is very much supposed to be a nationwide curriculum. [02:25.070 --> 02:26.230] We'll get into that in a moment. [02:27.790 --> 02:30.810] So the recent history of computer science education. [02:31.690 --> 02:35.350] Computer science education really started to pick up around like 2013, 2014. [02:35.350 --> 02:41.790] That's when organizations like CS4ALL and Code.org started to come into existence. [02:42.650 --> 02:46.410] We can see here we have Mayor de Blasio at the time. [02:46.530 --> 02:52.050] He didn't actually create the computer science program in New York City or fund it or mandate it. [02:52.250 --> 02:56.290] It came from Mayor Bloomberg who preceded him, but he sort of took the reins of it. [02:56.490 --> 02:58.370] And so this is from 2014. [02:58.370 --> 03:04.290] You can see over in... to the left over there, the right side of the screen. [03:05.210 --> 03:09.030] Chicago also started a computer science for all movement around this time. [03:09.350 --> 03:12.150] I would say like Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia. [03:13.430 --> 03:16.370] Michigan as a state, but really Detroit sort of. [03:20.750 --> 03:29.690] And parts of Southern California really started to pick up on computer science education movements, programs at this time, especially in elementary school, middle school, high school. [03:30.530 --> 03:32.750] Prior to this, it was very... [03:33.590 --> 03:37.270] It was much more hacker-based where people were, you know, coming up with their own programs. [03:37.490 --> 03:39.010] Teachers would come up with their own programs. [03:39.130 --> 03:43.090] Volunteers would come up with their own programs and sort of push into schools or do after-school activities. [03:43.370 --> 03:53.030] And then around 2014 is when it really became like an official thing where people start talking about computer science, teacher certification, computer science curriculum at the state level. [03:53.030 --> 03:57.170] And so that's really the recent history of computer science education. [03:57.690 --> 04:06.450] And in New York City, computer science education is overseen by the Office of Postsecondary Readiness, which is just a fancy way of saying like a jobs program. [04:06.450 --> 04:08.990] So they're very concerned with jobs and careers. [04:09.830 --> 04:15.150] And it typically is promoted as a jobs pipeline for the tech industry. [04:15.390 --> 04:16.630] I don't like the word pipeline. [04:17.070 --> 04:19.450] We're not like moving kids around. [04:19.450 --> 04:21.770] We're not like sending them down a path. [04:22.650 --> 04:23.670] Pipelines to me... [04:23.670 --> 04:30.330] When I think pipelines, I think how to blow up a pipeline, which is a book very inspiring to me in my own work here. [04:30.730 --> 04:32.270] We might talk about that a little bit later. [04:32.490 --> 04:34.350] But I don't like the word pipeline. [04:34.610 --> 04:40.910] And I don't think of my programs as jobs programs or my curricula as something setting some up for a job. [04:40.910 --> 04:49.470] But there's a slight bit of activism in this curriculum because I am trying to create privacy professionals and public interest technologists. [04:51.470 --> 04:53.110] New York City Education Blueprint. [04:53.550 --> 05:00.810] I'm bringing this up because it was one of the first real computer science standards in the United States. [05:01.570 --> 05:03.490] New York City was one of the forerunners in this. [05:03.550 --> 05:08.950] And so a lot of the stuff around the country is based off of the stuff New York City or people in New York City were doing at the time. [05:10.130 --> 05:18.570] And privacy is included in this blueprint, which becomes the standards for New York State, which can also get used in other states. [05:18.990 --> 05:23.550] Because the people... it's a very small group of people who work in computer science education at that level. [05:23.770 --> 05:29.010] So oftentimes the people working in New York State will consult for other states on their standards. [05:29.690 --> 05:35.670] Anyway, the privacy and trust is included in these standards from an early level. [05:35.670 --> 05:40.830] You can see here, trust, where they talk about security, privacy, and consent and trust. [05:41.010 --> 05:44.130] But when it's taught in a curriculum, it's very much at a cursory level. [05:44.450 --> 05:47.870] It's often about like... even at the middle school and high school level. [05:48.030 --> 05:51.190] It's like, maybe you shouldn't share your passwords and you should log into your computer. [05:51.290 --> 05:53.690] They're not really talking about like, who do you trust with your data? [05:53.950 --> 05:55.250] And should we trust companies? [05:55.410 --> 05:59.250] It's very... it's very cursory and surface level. [06:01.350 --> 06:07.130] Infrastructure, which is also a major component of this curriculum, is also put into the standards. [06:07.390 --> 06:09.370] And we can see here where it talks about physical Internet. [06:12.010 --> 06:14.230] And infrastructure is, again, something that's not really taught. [06:14.450 --> 06:21.550] It's not what I'm going to call like, the sexy or the hot... the hot thing about computer science education. [06:21.550 --> 06:29.310] No one wants to talk about digging ditches and putting wires in them and running wires across the country. [06:29.330 --> 06:32.070] Even though they talk about pipelines, they don't want to talk about the actual Internet pipeline. [06:32.350 --> 06:38.810] No one's talking about undersea cables or really like, data centers and interconnectedness and stuff like that in these curricula. [06:39.090 --> 06:43.170] So it's a very overlooked and sort of untouched topic. [06:43.170 --> 06:52.590] Like in most... even though it's included in standards around the country, it's overlooked and untouched in most curricula at every level, elementary, middle, and high school. [06:53.770 --> 06:55.470] Who funds computer science education? [06:55.470 --> 06:56.590] This is very important. [06:57.250 --> 07:06.350] I show Code.org here because it's not that big in New York City, but it's a nationwide organization that has a very huge reach, especially across America. [07:06.790 --> 07:08.130] Here are some recent stats from them. [07:08.190 --> 07:10.030] They've taught 92 million students. [07:11.490 --> 07:14.130] They have connections in all 50 states. [07:14.390 --> 07:19.550] There's millions of teachers who use Code.org as their primary source of computer science education. [07:19.750 --> 07:21.890] Who funds Code.org? [07:22.390 --> 07:29.310] Amazon, Google, Microsoft, the various former CEOs of these companies. [07:30.110 --> 07:37.750] So all of these organizations... so organizations like Code.org are very much captured by big tech and funders. [07:39.870 --> 07:41.210] Here's some more from Code.org. [07:41.350 --> 07:48.170] They're major partners now, not just the people who fund it, the people they work with to develop their curricula and improve their curricula and expand their curricula. [07:49.250 --> 07:52.950] Cisco, makers of Internet hardware that may or may not be backdoored. [07:53.610 --> 08:00.950] Amazon, Atlassian, which is very much like the corporate, like we want everyone to do agile development and get a job. [08:01.850 --> 08:06.650] Facebook, the big data destroyers. [08:06.850 --> 08:08.310] Facebook, Google, Microsoft. [08:09.090 --> 08:09.770] Uber's in there. [08:10.750 --> 08:15.270] I still don't get Uber, but they're tracking all of our rides if you use Uber. [08:15.410 --> 08:16.410] I've never been in an Uber. [08:16.890 --> 08:21.950] Anyway, so computer science education is largely captured, even when it's done by a foundation. [08:21.950 --> 08:27.490] So there's foundations in New York City, like Robin Hood or the Siegel family is often the funder. [08:27.650 --> 08:30.310] But when you look at who funds them, it's the same group of people. [08:30.590 --> 08:48.170] It's very much... computer science education is very much captured by these companies and the ideas of these companies, which is why, in my opinion, we don't see strong curricula around these topics, around privacy that addresses it in a substantial way. [08:50.490 --> 08:54.470] And so what's in my curricula that we're working at in my organization? [08:55.070 --> 08:58.490] It's very much a social studies plus computer science curricula. [08:58.930 --> 09:01.590] And so it looks at the history of digital infrastructure. [09:01.650 --> 09:04.130] So we teach kids what digital infrastructure is. [09:04.390 --> 09:12.530] If you haven't heard the term before, digital infrastructure is everything from like the wires that, you know, run underground or run undersea. [09:12.530 --> 09:17.690] It's the 4G and 5G towers that you see on buildings. [09:18.330 --> 09:20.950] It's also like our ability to do like tap to pay. [09:21.230 --> 09:23.290] Apps are also part of our digital infrastructure. [09:24.210 --> 09:26.610] PayPal is part of our digital infrastructure. [09:27.390 --> 09:30.690] So digital infrastructure encompasses a lot. [09:31.450 --> 09:38.470] PlayStation Network, Xbox Live are considered part of our digital infrastructure, which is very important to teens who take these classes. [09:39.490 --> 09:43.270] We also talk about the laws governing digital infrastructure and communications. [09:43.510 --> 09:51.810] So students learn about FCC, FTC, net neutrality, COPA, FERPA, SEPA. [09:53.030 --> 09:57.790] SEPA is the law that sort of governs like if you're like a library or a school, what you have to block. [10:00.910 --> 10:04.010] We cover HIPAA a little bit depending on my audience for that. [10:04.890 --> 10:10.150] And then we also look at recent events in cybersecurity, privacy, and government and corporate whistleblowing. [10:17.390 --> 10:22.470] So we've got just general infrastructure, the laws, various agencies. [10:22.470 --> 10:30.310] So we look at everything from the FCC, which is relatively benign, although depending on the administration is certainly a captured organization, to the NSA. [10:32.210 --> 10:34.790] We look at whistleblowers and contemporary news stories. [10:35.710 --> 10:41.090] We look at stories and reports about like app data collection and data brokers. [10:42.510 --> 10:48.130] Students look at the operating system data collection that's done on their phone and read white papers about that. [10:48.750 --> 10:53.970] White papers by many of the presenters at HOPE here who put out that kind of information. [10:53.970 --> 10:58.150] And then they look at commercial data breaches and tools to examine commercial data breaches. [10:58.590 --> 11:01.890] Which is always fun to do when kids are looking up like people's passwords. [11:02.090 --> 11:04.810] Like, have I been pwned and those types of things. [11:04.930 --> 11:07.430] And getting to see people's passwords and what people use as passwords. [11:08.210 --> 11:10.130] It's a very fun activity for kids. [11:12.070 --> 11:17.850] The general lesson structure of this curricula, we start by framing it as a worldwide problem. [11:19.550 --> 11:25.690] Digital infrastructure is a global thing and it's not just one country that has a problem with their digital infrastructure and privacy. [11:26.450 --> 11:33.970] Every country has a problem between corporations and the government working together to invade privacy. [11:36.670 --> 11:43.110] And every lesson has... I try to keep the lessons in a way that has something about infrastructure. [11:44.030 --> 11:46.690] Something about the government and how it affects the students. [11:46.890 --> 11:48.370] And a way for them to regain control. [11:48.690 --> 11:55.230] I don't want to create or put on the kids a sort of like privatist or privacy fatalism. [11:55.350 --> 11:57.230] Where they're like, there's nothing I can do about my privacy. [11:57.430 --> 11:59.790] Like, my information's out there, there's nothing that can be done. [12:00.150 --> 12:02.490] So why don't I just completely submit myself to it? [12:02.490 --> 12:11.850] Like, I want them to... every lesson to have a takeaway on what they can do personally to sort of safeguard a little bit of their privacy. [12:18.830 --> 12:24.810] What kind of blockers and VPNs and things like that do I want to run on my computers? [12:42.690 --> 12:46.150] And this goes for all the curricula that I've designed for the DOE as well. [36:43.290 --> 36:48.290] So I think that the computer science standards are very lofty and what they think they're going to teach students.
