[01:33.040 --> 01:40.100] But then I'm going to show you a demonstration that I think sort of proves a point about surveillance that we really need to make. [03:36.900 --> 03:47.180] One of the interesting things about TikTok is we now know that it is one of not only the most addictive apps that's out there, but that the psychological effects are pretty serious. [03:47.840 --> 03:57.960] And by that, I mean, we spend an awful lot of time on TikTok if we use it, but we don't remember nearly anything we saw on TikTok, right? [03:58.240 --> 04:07.580] It's a combination of both that short media format and the fact that we go on apps like that to do so-called doom scrolling. [04:08.060 --> 04:13.240] It's a passive thing that you're kind of disengaging your mind when you're on the platform. [04:13.240 --> 04:13.820] Okay. [04:16.220 --> 04:18.280] TikTok isn't just an app though. [04:18.560 --> 04:21.080] I mean, we still kind of talk about it in that context, right? [04:21.280 --> 04:24.780] And, you know, you talk about, say, oh, it's a Gen Z app, et cetera, et cetera. [04:25.600 --> 04:31.260] TikTok may be the most popular app in the United States usage wise. [04:31.820 --> 04:42.980] Depending on the metrics you look at, it may be bigger than all of the apps, but it's certainly the largest social app for number of minutes, number of hours in usage in the United States. [04:43.180 --> 04:48.900] And that's across all kinds of cultural barriers, all kinds of different demographic groups. [04:49.060 --> 04:49.240] Okay. [06:16.640 --> 06:20.440] And they say this is a strategic issue where we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. [06:20.440 --> 06:23.800] And there's this huge amount of stuff that we don't see. [06:24.280 --> 06:32.280] And they've been gearing up for a geopolitical conflict with China for a very, very long time in the context of digital technology. [06:32.480 --> 06:32.840] Okay? [06:36.660 --> 06:47.860] This is a good meme from a couple days before the actual ban on TikTok was supposed to go into effect, sort of went into effect back in January. [06:48.560 --> 06:52.140] Now, I think this was a real cultural moment. [06:52.400 --> 06:53.920] Obviously, it was all over the television. [06:53.920 --> 06:55.060] You can get away from it. [06:55.140 --> 06:55.920] It was all over the Internet. [06:55.920 --> 06:57.160] People were talking about it. [06:57.280 --> 06:59.720] And there was a bit of an exodus, right? [07:00.400 --> 07:01.560] Not this exodus. [07:01.960 --> 07:04.380] This exodus is exodus privacy. [07:05.000 --> 07:08.240] They're a great group that I've worked with in France. [07:08.580 --> 07:12.920] And they do tracker analysis, basically trackers, as we call them. [07:13.160 --> 07:16.580] At Yale Privacy Lab, we come up with, basically, do static analysis. [07:16.900 --> 07:19.460] We get snippets of these sort of signatures. [07:19.780 --> 07:24.220] And then we send those upstream to exodus privacy. [07:24.480 --> 07:26.180] They put it in their tracker database. [07:26.480 --> 07:31.020] These SDKs that are in these Android apps are then identified by their automated tool. [07:31.580 --> 07:37.240] And then FDroid actually hooks into their API and scans all the apps for it as well. [07:37.340 --> 07:39.820] I think the Aurora store also does that now. [07:39.980 --> 07:41.480] So it's very good work that they do. [07:41.640 --> 07:45.260] But maybe we should be a little afraid of TikTok, right? [07:45.540 --> 07:47.320] There are these trackers in TikTok. [07:47.560 --> 07:52.220] There's no doubt that there's a huge privacy problem with TikTok, right? [07:54.780 --> 07:59.680] The ban itself is obviously some sort of geopolitical mess, right? [07:59.780 --> 08:02.340] We're talking about three different administrations here, technically. [08:02.840 --> 08:07.420] The first Trump administration, the Biden administration, and now Trump two. [08:08.200 --> 08:11.120] Let's hope there's not a Trump three, but who knows? [08:12.440 --> 08:20.420] Anyway, and this has obviously just gone back and forth, back and forth, like all of the nonsense around tariffs. [08:20.840 --> 08:25.760] When I talk about this issue, I call it a data tariff issue, okay? [08:25.980 --> 08:29.720] That's the correct context, in my opinion, to be talking about TikTok. [08:30.140 --> 08:32.600] These information flows are valuable. [08:33.100 --> 08:35.460] This data is a commodity, okay? [08:35.760 --> 08:41.600] And United States big tech companies want that commodity for themselves. [08:41.640 --> 08:45.540] And certainly the executive branch has listened, right? [08:47.400 --> 08:48.920] Now, the flip-flopping. [08:49.820 --> 08:53.760] This is what apparently happens, right, with Trump. [08:54.260 --> 08:57.960] Kicking it down the road, kicking it down the road, 90 days, 90 days, 90 days. [08:58.380 --> 08:59.920] Who knows what's going to go on? [09:01.200 --> 09:14.400] What we do know is that when the ban happened, ban, back in January and February, sort of, there was this big drop-off of usage, right? [09:15.920 --> 09:25.080] From TikTok, so this is the competitors, the people using TikTok started jumping to these other Chinese-affiliated apps, right? [09:25.480 --> 09:27.600] The big one being Red Note, right? [09:28.160 --> 09:31.420] Red Note is a worse security disaster than TikTok. [09:31.680 --> 09:32.620] I'm not going to go into it. [09:33.040 --> 09:37.660] But it was a sign, especially that Gen Z was rebelling. [09:37.980 --> 09:47.780] They were purposefully going to awful, from a privacy perspective, awful from a security perspective, awful from an open-source perspective, apps. [09:48.280 --> 09:55.520] They were going to Red Note, they were going to Lemonade, they were going to these things, just to stick it to the man, so to speak. [09:55.680 --> 09:55.780] Right? [09:56.020 --> 09:59.680] Just to make a point that they were going to use Chinese apps, no matter what. [09:59.940 --> 10:00.160] Right? [10:01.940 --> 10:06.620] But who actually benefited the What's the most from the so-called ban on TikTok? [10:07.660 --> 10:09.600] Well, we have some numbers now. [10:10.000 --> 10:16.060] So the little experiment of it being offline for a short time gave us some data, which is very interesting. [10:16.920 --> 10:30.520] As you can see, there's an enormous amount of money that can be made by Meta specifically, with folks jumping to Instagram specifically, if they leave TikTok and go to that platform. [10:30.520 --> 10:39.340] And we did see some of that happen already, especially folks who have entire businesses around TikTok, who are influencers around TikTok. [10:39.340 --> 10:42.620] They were saying, you know, crap, I've got to use Instagram. [10:42.620 --> 10:48.700] I've got to get in there because my entire business could just be banned with my entire audience or a huge portion of my audience. [10:49.200 --> 10:54.000] Snap is another one that benefits, and there's some other intermediaries as well in the United States. [10:54.000 --> 11:04.980] But this commodity, this data, already has started flowing into big tech, into U.S.-affiliated Silicon Valley firms, instead of, obviously, Chinese-affiliated firms. [11:06.820 --> 11:08.760] There's all kinds of research around this. [11:08.920 --> 11:12.560] We don't have time to go into it, basically, but you can look into the research itself. [11:12.560 --> 11:18.320] We don't get these kinds of experiments that often in the real world with our platforms. [11:18.540 --> 11:28.100] So it's a very interesting one to look at, seeing where the data flows went, seeing where the advertising revenue went, seeing where the attention went, really. [15:56.420 --> 16:00.820] That tends to be the biggest issue we get because that's what people are using it for. [16:06.460 --> 16:08.840] It would be nice to have some triaging and some help with that. [16:08.840 --> 16:13.560] But we need to be building alternative front ends and embracing alternative front ends again. [16:14.380 --> 16:19.140] I've noticed and I've seen, and it's partially because of the lawfare around all of this, of course. [17:01.980 --> 17:10.820] So about a week after the whole kerfuffle around TikTok and the supposed ban, which I don't even think was 24 hours. [17:11.040 --> 17:15.700] By the way, sticktock.com, of course, did stay up during the ban, and people were using it. [17:15.780 --> 17:18.640] So that was a good real-world proof of concept as well. [17:19.880 --> 17:22.840] But DeepSeek was released shortly after that. [17:23.220 --> 17:28.080] DeepSeek also has these trackers, as I'm showing in the X's privacy window here, right? [17:29.580 --> 17:38.040] Very cleverly, DeepSeek was released by the team, basically the same folks who make TikTok, a lot of the ByteDance folks. [17:38.300 --> 17:42.640] It was released about a week after TikTok was allowed to go back up. [17:43.040 --> 17:48.200] Now, we can talk about all the legal stuff around this whole situation. [17:48.200 --> 17:50.880] Should the executive branch have the power to do this? [17:52.380 --> 17:54.380] Actually, they're supposed to enforce the law. [17:54.600 --> 17:58.100] This is the law of the land that there's not supposed to be TikTok. [17:58.780 --> 18:02.180] The executive branch has just unilaterally decided not to enforce the law. [18:02.820 --> 18:05.480] I didn't know that could be done, but hey, it is being done. [18:06.600 --> 18:09.360] With DeepSeek, we haven't had that kind of a ruling yet. [18:09.620 --> 18:11.560] We may not see that kind of a fight. [18:12.000 --> 18:12.440] Who knows? [18:12.440 --> 18:16.240] But DeepSeek, of course, is, in my opinion, a much bigger deal. [18:28.120 --> 18:34.540] This war I'm talking about between these two countries, the United States and China, in the digital battlefield, right? [18:34.540 --> 18:40.920] This war now is in this artificial intelligence, so-called AI area. [18:41.240 --> 18:45.940] And as we know, NVIDIA is hugely overvalued, in my opinion. [18:46.240 --> 18:53.660] But there's an enormous amount of the global economy wrapped up in these firms now. [18:55.880 --> 19:05.640] If we don't sort of de-escalate these conflicts, we could see serious, serious impacts on ordinary individuals. [19:05.880 --> 19:08.280] The kind of folks who are just going out there and using TikTok. [19:08.640 --> 19:11.100] The kind of folks who are just going out there and using ChatGPT. [19:11.340 --> 19:13.900] And it's not that I love ChatGPT, believe me. [19:14.040 --> 19:16.920] And it's not like I'm trying to save them from the threat of DeepSeek. [19:17.060 --> 19:22.400] But we need to always consider and talk about these things in the context that we're living in, right? [19:25.080 --> 19:31.460] One of the interesting things about DeepSeek, and one of the reasons that, of course, it kind of did hurt the NVIDIA stock, right? [20:25.800 --> 20:28.420] We didn't see the same sort of DeepSeek as a threat. [20:28.520 --> 20:31.400] It took a little while before people started saying that, right? [20:31.720 --> 20:38.480] But if you looked at the network traffic, you would see that the traffic is directed to mainland China. [20:38.480 --> 20:47.760] Now, in the U.S., if you use the DeepSeek app, you would see that the traffic was going through an intermediary primarily in Germany. [20:48.580 --> 20:48.680] Okay. [20:49.540 --> 20:54.620] Taobao is basically a grocery store chain that's getting into the cloud world. [20:55.440 --> 20:58.740] And they're running a bunch of different services in Germany. [20:58.960 --> 21:02.820] And then that stuff is ostensibly going to mainland China, right? [21:04.180 --> 21:11.700] But if you look at the traffic, there's no doubt it's either directly going to mainland China or Chinese intermediaries, right? [21:11.860 --> 21:16.440] So you would think that the conversation around DeepSeek would be similar to the conversation around TikTok. [21:16.700 --> 21:19.060] It hasn't risen to that level yet. [21:21.120 --> 21:22.960] Also, obviously, it has ByteDance components. [21:23.140 --> 21:25.460] It has fingerprints of ByteDance all over it. [21:25.460 --> 21:31.720] And also, there's all kinds of other stuff to say about it that they actually outline in their privacy policy. [21:31.940 --> 21:36.500] So it's not like ByteDance was trying to hide this or any of the folks behind any of these apps are trying to hide this. [21:36.600 --> 21:44.600] They have very clear privacy policies that say we use these third-party SDKs and they link to the source. [21:50.520 --> 22:06.360] Again, the privacy issues with DeepSeek, the privacy issues with TikTok, the privacy issues with our software ecosystem and our software supply chain, especially on smartphone platforms, iOS and Android, right, are awful, right? [22:13.420 --> 22:25.240] The average person does not think about when they open an app that it's talking to 12, 13, 15, 22 different servers around the world and snarfing up their information, right? [22:36.840 --> 22:47.440] It's just the user agent string coming from, this is actually an Android virtual machine in this case, but you can clearly see there is something that we can call browser fingerprinting, right? [22:51.220 --> 22:57.420] So you can potentially uniquely identify users just using the user agent string, right? [22:58.360 --> 23:06.260] And here's the translation of the part of the privacy policy, the disclosure about third parties that DeepSeek has. [23:27.020 --> 23:33.240] The reason I'm bringing this up is because this problem with tracking SDKs is nothing new. [23:33.240 --> 23:36.780] But it proves another point we need to make, right? [23:36.900 --> 23:40.760] We need to always keep focused on what's actually going on here from a privacy standpoint. [23:41.020 --> 23:47.480] Not obsessively talk about TikTok, or obsessively talk about any specific actor, country, nation state, whatever. [23:49.360 --> 23:51.080] It's just a huge problem. [24:12.740 --> 24:16.620] The telehealth apps are also really, really bad. [24:18.200 --> 24:25.360] But this one specifically looked at like X-Mode and some of the well-known names in sort of the tracking ecosystem now. [24:26.000 --> 24:26.260] Okay? [24:40.960 --> 24:46.340] It's certainly one of the intermediaries, one of the tracker SDKs that I've been looking at for a while. [24:46.840 --> 24:50.440] They had an enormous amount of data that leaked. [24:52.180 --> 24:56.620] And we're familiar, as privacy people, that this has real-world impact on people, right? [24:57.000 --> 24:59.280] This is from that story by Zach Whitaker. [24:59.960 --> 25:09.060] And this basically shows a map where the locations of individuals, right, can be found because of that Gravy Analytics breach, right? [25:09.060 --> 25:13.880] So just to roll back a little bit, you can be running an app, right? [25:14.540 --> 25:16.540] In this case, it's Tinder, right? [25:17.160 --> 25:23.960] And in the background, right, snippets of code can be running that are talking to servers, right? [25:24.120 --> 25:26.160] And sending your location data to those servers. [25:26.380 --> 25:28.140] Then they can be stored in a database. [25:28.500 --> 25:35.060] And then the intermediary, in this case Gravy Analytics, can sell that information about you, right? [25:35.060 --> 25:38.780] And be breached, and the information can get out there, right? [25:38.980 --> 25:44.020] And you as a user, you only have on your phone a little permission dialogue, right? [25:44.220 --> 25:46.740] To just make a few choices when you install the app. [25:47.140 --> 25:48.340] Ostensibly a few choices. [25:50.080 --> 25:57.680] Baptiste Robert, Elliot Alderson online, he basically has a huge data set that he hasn't even gone through yet. [25:58.760 --> 26:01.140] And this is just a small part of it. [26:02.420 --> 26:07.400] So I bring up this breach because we're starting to see, just like with traditional data breaches, right? [26:07.520 --> 26:11.760] That the scale of this privacy problem is enormous, right? [26:11.920 --> 26:14.620] And that the fallout is really serious. [26:14.800 --> 26:18.720] But like real-world data breaches of traditional systems, right? [26:19.460 --> 26:22.860] It's just an everyday occurrence now, or it's getting to be much more common. [26:22.860 --> 26:27.180] So it's not a big deal anymore, unfortunately, right? [26:27.380 --> 26:33.040] When the Yahoo breach happened a few years ago, however many years ago that was, six, seven years ago, right? [26:33.100 --> 26:34.600] Everybody was freaking out about it. [26:34.720 --> 26:40.540] It had a big impact on the valuation of Yahoo when they were the merger and acquisition process, et cetera, et cetera, right? [26:41.240 --> 26:43.400] Now breaches are just happening every other day. [26:43.520 --> 26:52.520] And we're going to start seeing them more and more from these tracker SDK intermediaries, including some of the trackers that are in an app like TikTok, right? [26:57.820 --> 27:03.900] Obviously, the folks who feel the most harm from this are the most vulnerable, right? [27:04.280 --> 27:05.800] The ones that are affected the most. [27:06.180 --> 27:11.820] A lot of that, you know, LGBTQ plus folks, you know, religious minorities, et cetera, et cetera. [27:12.480 --> 27:17.260] These groups are often the ones who are the most easily identifiable, right? [27:17.520 --> 27:18.960] And the most persecuted. [27:19.180 --> 27:20.960] So it's a serious, serious thing. [27:22.300 --> 27:24.200] This is an example of an Android manifest. [27:24.460 --> 27:29.540] We probably have folks who, for better or for worse, have had to package and build Android apps, right? [27:29.960 --> 27:31.460] So you might be familiar with this. [27:31.600 --> 27:42.920] If you want to look into this sort of thing and do the work yourself the hard way, although there's some good automated tools these days, you're basically doing a little bit of analysis on these .dex files, right? [27:43.540 --> 27:54.920] So, and the manifest itself, which you also kind of have to unpack, that has the information, usually the permission information, which will sort of give away that the SDKs are there in the first place. [27:55.940 --> 27:59.460] Now, we didn't used to have those permissions, right, at all. [28:00.520 --> 28:07.100] Those permissions came because not only hackers and inventors and innovators, right, were pushing for them to exist. [28:07.520 --> 28:16.720] But because the public had an understanding from stories, like the one I did with Yael at The Intercept, they started to have an understanding that there were problems, right? [28:16.900 --> 28:21.140] And they were clamoring for real privacy, which Apple pretends to give people. [28:22.140 --> 28:22.500] Okay. [29:23.260 --> 29:28.760] You can actually overlay it on open street maps on your own hometown if you do a little bit of hacking, I guess. [29:29.440 --> 29:37.920] And then we went around and we were tagging different surveillance cameras and ALPRs and things of that nature around New Haven. [29:37.920 --> 29:41.740] And you can actually see there sometimes is a correlation or there often is a correlation. [29:41.740 --> 29:46.240] The biggest traffic points, of course, of individuals are going to have the most surveillance, right? [29:48.240 --> 30:00.260] But I'm going to show you right now, just sort of to cap off here, that we need to worry about more than just location surveillance, just like we need to shift the conversation from just talking about how bad China is, right? [30:01.900 --> 30:05.320] So we have tons of sensors in our devices. [30:05.320 --> 30:13.660] These sensors can be used in unexpected ways to also get information that can be used for surveillance on individuals, right? [30:25.380 --> 30:38.680] Now you can analyze video and now you can use generative AI and computer vision tools to analyze someone's gait and try to say, okay, within a certain reasonable percentage, this is Sean O'Brien walking down the street in New Haven, okay? [30:39.260 --> 30:44.120] And that can be done also with accelerometers in our phones, right? [30:44.140 --> 30:46.180] We have all kinds of other stuff that can do this. [30:46.680 --> 30:55.800] I think we're going to see a world where people get a traffic ticket or don't pay for their insurance or spend too much time at the bar, right? [30:55.800 --> 31:07.300] And they're going to get into their car, and you may agree with this or you may not, depending on your perspective on public safety, but I think it's coming, and the car is just not going to start, right?
