[06:59.380 --> 07:08.220] This one eruption, one volcano made enough high altitude sulfur dioxide that it cooled the Earth by half a degree for two years from this one eruption. [07:09.060 --> 07:15.180] I also learned that there's really strong consensus among scientists. [07:15.400 --> 07:21.160] Unlike many other things like marine cloud brightening, most of the things in climate tech that are newer. [07:21.700 --> 07:23.820] This is pretty much the consensus view. [07:24.000 --> 07:29.200] Solar geoengineering could offset most climate change for most people most of the time. [07:29.200 --> 07:35.900] As scientists tend to have, this is a very dry way of saying something really important. [07:36.180 --> 07:40.300] We can do something about at least the temperature part of this problem. [07:41.440 --> 07:46.020] And the craziest thing, one of the craziest things I learned, was that nobody had done this. [07:52.300 --> 07:58.920] If during our life we want the world to be cooler, we need to slightly reduce the amount of sun that hits the planet. [08:06.820 --> 08:09.400] What I'm doing is a little controversial, as are these other things. [12:57.700 --> 13:16.080] And I was trying to vacuum pump most of the fumes of the burning sulfur, which sulfur combusts to sulfur dioxide, capture them in here without, like, choking everyone in the room from the sulfur dioxide, precipitating sulfuric acid in their lungs, and then run it through a dry ice chamber to try to precipitate out the sulfur dioxide. [16:15.200 --> 16:23.220] So, one gram of sulfur dioxide, the chemical we use, roughly offsets the warming impact of one ton of CO2 for one year. [16:23.300 --> 16:25.420] And this assumes we deliver it all the way to the stratosphere. [16:25.860 --> 16:30.520] There's uncertainty with both of these, both CO2's warming impact and SO2's cooling impact. [16:30.820 --> 16:37.760] But, you know, just like with CO2, we shouldn't let uncertainty, when we know directionality, prevent us from taking action. [16:39.960 --> 16:55.360] So, if I want to offset my personal warming impact this year, I got to handle the CO2 I emitted this year, and because our particles only sit, we match it to a ton year, I have to deal with all the shit from the past 41 years of my life that's still up there. [18:00.520 --> 18:06.460] And you start to see why this is like, you know, people's emissions add up with this gas that stays there for hundreds of years.
