New dial-up service numbers for Michigan State University

The MSU Computer Laboratory is pleased to announce a new service for dial-up access. The new service provides the same service (speed and features) as our existing dial-up access in East Lansing, on the phone number (517) 432-7200. Both services are part of the MichNet dial-in service; see "MichNet Dial-In Connections" for more details.

The new dial-up service has the advantage of allowing MSU to provide local dial-up access numbers in various locations within South Central Michigan, all of which connect back to East Lansing with no long distance charges. Also, by connecting back to East Lansing, you will generally avoid the need for a dial-up usage "token", which is often required for the existing non-Lansing MichNet numbers. The numbers to call, by exchange:

We still have a few more sites which will be added in South Central Michigan (the Lansing LATA, which covers much of the 517 area code) shortly. Check back here or check the "msu.network.announce" newsgroup for updates.

Notes:

  1. As of 8-Mar-2002, dial-up users who attempt to call one of the above numbers in an area currently serviced by Century Telephone, Frontier Communications or Springport Telephone Co. may not be able to dial the numbers listed above. We are working with the phone companies for a resolution of this problem, but it may take some time.

This issue affects calls to the following phone numbers in the following locations:

       Allen (227-2678)
       Concord (954-2678)
       Frontier (962-2678)
       Prattville (892-2678)
       Springport (878-2678)
       Sunfield (876-2678)

This issue affects users attempting local calls from the following areas:

Frontier, Litchfield, Montgomery, Mosherville, Prattville, Ransom, Springport, and Sunfield.

  2. Users who are outside the 517 area code or the Lansing LATA, but who can call one of the above locations as a local number, may need to use 11-digit dialing to reach these numbers (i.e. "1-517-xxx-2678"). The call should still be treated as a local call with no additional charges.

This would apply to users in the following areas:

    Bellevue, Gregory, Hastings, and Olivet.

If you find that you cannot complete the call, even using 11-digit dialing, please let us know. Also, if you find that you are being billed for long distance charges, contact your phone company, but let us know as well.

  3. These numbers will function identically to the Greater Lansing number, but are listed for completeness.
Reporting trouble:

If you experience difficulty attempting to use one of the above numbers, we would like to know about it. In particular, we are looking for individuals who are able to successfully use their current MichNet dial-up service number, but have difficulty with the new service numbers.

To report trouble, you may either send e-mail to msunet@msu.edu or call the Network Trouble Number at (517) 353-4602. You will need to provide the following information:
