To tell ya truth, I doubt Andy has been happy in SIU since he was transferred there i doubt he really understands the big picture there and he's a motor guy: that's where his heart is. I think Bryan is a nice guy as well, and no doubt a capable Sgt in some assignments, but probably a bad fit I SIU. Actually, I do my best to NOT think about DPS.

Finally saw Harrison on TV - awful... Until the recent incident, DPS has been a non-entity in the TV media.

Not that what I think means anything...

Wow - that's great Bruce. Congrats to you and Holly, once again. Very neat.

Allison got engaged about two weeks ago. She and Chad (Arianna's papa) are getting married this November 12th. Nancy and I think it's great.

Nancy and Allison (and me, when/if I'm dragged into it) are in full wedding planning mode.

Something my Professor sent me

Dad, her is a little lesson my professor sent me that I thought was very interesting....

"

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students responded with a unanimous 'yes....'

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand

The students laughed..

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car..

The sand is everything else---the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children..

Spend time with your parents.

Visit with grandparents.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

Play another 18 holes of golf.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.

Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.

Set your priorities.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'

The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's

Always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

The worlds largest army

    Great Statistics.

The world's largest army... America's hunters! I had never thought
    about this....

A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states
and arrived at a striking conclusion:

There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin.

Allow me to restate that number.

Over the last several months, Wisconsin's hunters became the eighth
    largest army in the world.

More men under arms than in Iran.

More than in France and Germany combined.

These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt
with firearms, and no one was killed.

That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of
Pennsylvania and Michigan's 700,000 hunters, all of whom have now
    returned home.

Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally
    establishes the fact that

the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army
    in the world.

    The point?

America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of
    home-grown firepower.

Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of
    national security.

    *************************************************

That's why all enemies, foreign and domestic, want to see us disarmed.

Food for thought when next we consider gun control.

While we watched CNN or CBS, ABC or NBC or listened to NPR or read the New York Times and never saw, read or heard a minute of coverage of this travesty…while we let our guard down and we let the Marxist/Socialist/Communist Left and Progressives creep into our schools, the unions, the media and our government…banners and posters with the images of Ernesto “Che” Guevara (Castro’s executioner) and Lenin would make Fidel Castro, Joe Stalin or Karl Marx proud to be an American!

Thanks again Jimmy,

I took a look and thought it was very nicely presented.

COMMENTARY:

However, something remains very troubling. It looks like things haven't changed regarding your office and the Highway Patrol Division (HPD): not at all surprising given jack hegarty is still in place. Apparently, all, or almost all, of the non-truck related terrific work done day in and day out by DPS HPD officers all over the state, still seems to fall through the information cracks created by who else, hegarty. Sadly, it is pretty clear he will not voluntarily change his single-minded focus. I personally think the DPS HPD personnel deserve much, much better...

All of the above COMMENTARY was written by RETIRED DPS SGT. KEVIN WOOOD, and NOT by anyone currently employed at DPS.

Glad you guys are ok and I completely understand being depressed about your grandson's speech. Oh well is right, you can't do anything about it and unfortunately you know all too well what a helpless feeling that is.

Nancy would like Arianna to start talking more as well. We'll see!

I know Jeff tries. That said, he won't get very many chances to implement the-right-thing as long as Hegarty is there. It's been that way for 15 months now, DA!!!

Didn't realize Coleman was lazy. Too Bad for that terrific district. You can't do that job and be lazy, as you know all too well. Jeff can't make a change???

Time will tell regarding DeSanti's ability to lead. I sure understand Dan's concerns, having been Bryan's boss in SIU.

Andy brought nothing to the table at all. He's had a year to learn from the veteran detectives. Shame on him if he didn't lean heavily on those guys as mentors. I sure leaned on the GITEM guys in Tucson, every single day.

DPS is a mess and it certainly isn't your fault.

Hang In There, and Stay Frosty.

Maybe lunch on Thu of Fri??

Stanhope is trying to do the right thing and is a little tired of the "Jack Show" Coleman is lazy and I share your opinion on the two current SIU supervisors. Dan Mitchell had expressed concern about DeSanti not being able to take charge. Andy is a nice guy but a real slow learner. They are on their own from now on and the current crop of "leaders" can take the blame for the demise of a good district. We are ok but I am somewhat depressed over my grandson's issues with his speech. O well

Sorry to hear about Jeff and his squad in Tucson. Why do ya think they went south (no pun intended)?

Too bad the SIU supers failed to show. I'm sure they would have benefited from your class. I personally like Andy and Bryan, but I don't think either will be very successful as SIU supervisors.

I have run into Larry a few times on the Thunderbird Park mountain trails. Nancy and I have been hiking them for a few weeks now: we try to get there 4 times a week. We have a couple trails that are both 3.5 miles and we can do them in an hour now: after Grandparent duty of course.

I agree with your assessment of the Big Three and seriously doubt there is anything you can do Bruce. Sadly, as we discussed repeatedly while I was still there, that will not change until they are all replaced. Major Crimes - you mean Dansen Coleman?

I hate what those three unqualified jerks at the top have done thus far, and undoubtedly will do in the future, to DPS. I'm still waiting for that chance meeting with Hegarty! That's enough of my time on them.

I hope the Campbell clan is well.

The Wood clan has unfortunately had a recent run of illness, but hopefully we are on the mend now.

    Stay Frosty old buddy.

Jeff Lane and crew went back to being Tucson types. Really disappointed. A couple of SIU supers were supposed to sit in and watch but I guess they could not make it. Larry Perry and I are friends otherwise I would not have done this. I hate to see what is happening but I do not think there is a way to stop it with the current leadership at the top and in major crimes. bah humbug

        Morning Bruce,

I doubt any of the detectives were asked, because there are four guys that I can think of who could handle that class.

Tim Lane days - that's really a crying shame for everyone: mostly the folks involved in the serious incidents!

What the heck has happened in Tucson?

        Stay Frosty...

It ain't the same there with you and Jennifer gone and I am afraid it is going to go back to a Tim Lane type unit in the bad old days. Lots of problems from the Tucson squad which is very disappointing.

Bruce,

I sent this note to a reporter:

The quoted response from the director is the kind of response one would expect to read or hear from an incumbent politician running for re-election, not from the head of our state police agency.

To blame budget woes for extremely low morale at DPS is frankly neither plausible or realistic. State budgets have certainly been a source for real angst and genuine concern at DPS, but come on: 95%.

Dad,

Do you know anything about the government shut down, will it affect my financial aid? Hope you are well. I have been trying to get hold of some one at my school but lines are crazy right now.

Most of these were not well received by the distaff side of the household. I, on the other hand, laughed my ass off.

In a Purdue University classroom, they were discussing the qualifications to be President of the United States. It was pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age. However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president. The class was taking it in and letting her rant, and not many jaws hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating "What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?" Yep, these are the same kinds of 18-year-olds that are now voting in our elections!

Thanks Bill.

Very well written response by that Airman. Too bad that Active Duty USAF author doesn't carry the same Washington DC weight as that Obama appointee.

    Attention Neighbors

This morning, (Monday, January 3) one of our neighbors on the 5200 block of Alameda , had a bold burglary take place at 6:30am. The neighbors had gotten up and opened the garage door to get the morning paper and at 6:30, it was still pretty dark out. While sitting in the kitchen sipping their morning coffee, they heard the door from the garage to the laundry room open. They looked around the corner to see a masked Hispanic man grabbing things off the clothes dryer. The thief ran out the door and the neighbor gave chase. The man jumped into a small red pick-up truck and he and his accomplice sped away with the neighbor hurling rocks after them. After returning to the garage, the neighbor realized that his golf clubs were gone. They called the police who came out to take a report. The police mentioned that a similar burglary happened north of Happy Valley , where the thief took a ladies purse from the laundry room. So, best to keep your garage door closed and be on the lookout for a suspicious little red pick-up truck.

This video was ACTUALLY made by the bad guys. The cameraman is filming his

friend as he praises Allah and launches mortar shots at American troops.

Little does he know that new mortar shell tracking technology can

track the trajectory of a hostile round and fire a retaliatory shot to

precisely the spot from which the hostile shell was fired. This only

requires the hostile mortar to fire 2 to 3 rounds.

Count the number of mortar rounds the masked insurgent fires in the video.

See how well it works. If you listen carefully you can hear the

single round from the American artillery fired in the distance. It

comes just after the terrorist fires his third round - and his fourth

round drops down the tube but that's as far as it gets.

No more Allah Akbars from this source! Isn't technology wonderful?

I will be working tonite and next Saturday and that may be it, however there is a possibility this could also change. the immigration thing is really the trump card as far as the state police are concerned since it is affecting how the dept may be re-organized. I will keep you posted.

Hey Bruce!

Know you must be VERY busy! Recently you></span> indicated that you might not be able to continue volunteering after July, depending on your DPS assignment. Was wondering if things have changed and you might be able to continue for a while longer. Anyway, when you get a chance, please let me hear from you.

Thanks so much for volunteering and for your service to the community and Arizona! You are appreciated!

I guess nothing more needs to be said though the Director needs to say something then I will feel better that politics will not enter into this. Nixon knew nothing of the Watergate break-in but it sure bit him when he tried to cover it up and lie about it. I suspect Mike Corbin knows a fair amount of exactly what was said and why. Dont think "little" joe will be asking for DPS help anymore though I have it on good authority the rest of the county police chiefs are sick of "Mini-Joe" and his crew. Say hi to GAFFney when you guys have brunch.

Sometime around 2050 last night, the Red Flex operator who was parked EB 101 near the 7th ave on ramp, called his wife and reported he had been shot. The victim's wife then called 911 who dispatched Phoenix and DPS officers at 2052.
Investigation revealed the victim was shot numerous times through the door of the vehicle and was pronounced DOA at JCL North Mountain.
Information from witness's indicated a possible suspect vehicle, a 1980's type suburban with a tire rack on the top had slowed down and may have fired the shots.
Early on detectives had contacted Red-Flex and had been able to download the video from the victims unit which showed a suburban type vehicle slowing down next to the Red-Flex unit and the audio picked up what was thought to be gunshots. The suspect vehicle exited the freeway but not before witness's were able to get a better description of the vehicle and driver.
All camera footage from all the 101 cameras and the I-17 at T-bird camera have been copied. Phoenix PD has developed an investigative lead on the possible driver of the suburban and are working on that.
There is heavy media coverage and release of the vehicle info in a hope of generating activity around the vehicle.
At his time that is all the information the lead agency, Phoenix PD is comfortable being released and is all the information I have at this time.

As a side note there are things going on with the investigation that I should not be privy to so I can honestly state I do not know. Phoenix Police have lead and DPS needs to trust their judgment with what is to be released to other government groups and the press.
Every investigative and support group that is needed is involved on an as needed basis. I know I am statingthe obvious but we will not get all the information we want on the particulars since DPS is not the lead on this and is only in an assist mode with the criminal investigation and is also doing the Critical Incident. Sgts Mapp and Pinnow and their respective squad are at home and will be heading out in a couple of hours. The commander of the Phoenix PD Homicide Unit is keeping me appraised of everything possible that can be released that will not compromise the on going investigation

Okay, no problem, what kind of a deal did you get? I could use some 223 too if the price is good!
    I assume you want 38 special since it's 125grn.

Dave: If you have already started making the 223 rds then disreard the message and continue. If you have not already expended any money then do not. I only really need the 40 cal ammo and some 38 cal 125 grn stuff. 500 of each only when you get around to it. I came into some 223 rds by accident and at a good price so I should be set hwever one cannot have to much of this stuff.

hope all is well. I will be up on the 10th or 11th of March and I do not have to rush back so I will be able to get up there. I think dad is past the time when he will be able to travel and I will be coming to colorado every 3 or 4 months from here on out.

        Okay,
Any particular type of mix AP, frangible gold dot??

Dad has made up his mind that he really doesn't have much to keep him here any longer and is ready to die. I expect that things will be happening pretty fast now. I am trying to make sure that Orion spends as much time as possible with him since there is not much left. Get ready because a lot of the arrangements will be falling on your shoulders, sorry, I have not been able to do much for several months now (don't talk with dad about this!!) Doctors just gave me the word that they cannot help me other than monitoring (usual).

Orion doing fine, Laura still trying to implode with the horses. No money left from sale of Colorado farm and 2006 Dodge truck. Good thing she has free housing, utilities, internet, cable etc. Hope I am keeping my finances separate (safe). I will have the house paid off in another couple of years which will free my mortgage payment. That will only leave utilities etc. Wish she would at least clean without badgering. She does take Orion to school in the mornings which is a big help, unless to count on her for any financial help since she cannot even keep her cell phone paid. They keep disconnecting it every month or two. Really cannot understand her, I would find the situation horribly embarrassing. Guess it's been going on for so long it is just business as usual for her. Need to make sure to keep it from Orion now that he is getting older. Don't want him thinking that bouncing checks, having credit cards canceled and having creditors after you okay. Oh well, guess it is not all bad. I would rather have her this way than have her being a bitch. In all the years that we have been together that has only reared it's ugly head a couple of times (no kidding!!) Really been lucky overall and must not lose sight of how good we really do have it and she really is a good woman.

Sorry for the rant, as you can see from the time stamp on this email it has not been a good night for me. Going to hit some more morphine and hope..

Hope all is going as well as possible with you and yours!!

        David

Dear Craig: I am opposed to the city of Phoenix granting the request to privatize a road that was constructed by our city for the public use. I believe the elite group on Camalback mountain tried the same thing earlier this year without success. Hopefully this small group of elitist will not prevail in their attempt to control access to this area.

Gosh, may we privatize all of the Indian Springs roads? Probably not. Camalback Mountain community tried same thing a couple of months ago and was denied. Once privatized no guarantees to access

    Hello All:

In an effort to improve safety and security for our families and homeowners on Honeysuckle Drive (Indian Gardens), we are working with the City of Phoenix to privitize the top portion of 47th Avenue as it approaches our private drive (from the stamped concrete to the path to the North). Although Honeysuckle Drive is an existing private drive, the addition of the top portion of 47th Avenue will allow unlawful incidences to be reported. You will see official notices posted sometime in the near future with more details.

Although this effort will allow for tighter security of unlawful vehicular traffic, in no way will it impede pedestrian access, as an improved pedestrian easement will be granted and maintained for access to the existing trail system in Stetson Hills.

We just wanted to inform and reassure all of you that there will be no impact on the accessibility to our street or the adjacent parks and trails.

    Best Regards,

    Denise C. Markovich for

Only thing of importance is the search warrants GIU executed in Phoenix and Goodyear lasr Friday. This was the culmination of a Fraud Scheme and ID theft case that resulted in the siezure of records, false credit cards, credit card making machine and proceeds of the illegal enterprise. Numerous items were sized as the assets of the crime. Mapp has the details.

We are working on the suicide/accident that ocurred Friday Morning at I-17 and Indian School. Subject fell or jumped. HP did NOT notify us and we entered the investigation late. I am fast appraching my threshold on trying to keep HP from looking foolish one day when they do things that are above thier ability and complain about lack of CI assistance on the small stuff

I will be working at home but can come in late afternoon if needed
