Remarks : In this essay I'll try to explain you my vision of the Ideal cracker

What drives Us? Who are We? Why do We do it? These are the most asked questions.
This essay is intented for clarifying some things about the Cracker Model
(my vision of The Ideal Cracker).
These are my personal believes.
If you don't agree with something I stated here you can mail me and tell what you didn't like,
and we're surely continue the discussion.

What drives us?
Each one has it's own motivations:
understanding how programs work,
what are the most used protection types,
learning how to code,
and some individuals crack for fame and the newest software
(btw cracking a program and then using the cracked version is a crime
and there are laws against this act.
So you should buy the program if you are interested or have the money
or use the trial version if u dont have the money..).
"This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch,
the beauty of the baud........
We seek after knowledge..." (Conscience of a Hacker - The Mentor ---I really recommend you read it).

Who are we?
Mostly it is believed that crackers are "lost cause",
programmers gone mad,
"teenagers who like to show how smart they are",
software pirates and several other definitions.

This is true in a small procentage.
"We seek after knowledge...
and you call us criminals.
We exist without skin colour,
without nationality,
without religious bias..." (Conscience of a Hacker).

The real Cracker (My view of it) must have alteast the following caracteristics:
always be willing to learn new things,
respect other's people work (yes, programmers are also people),
this means that they don't rip other's people results
(claiming a crack to be his and lame actions like that),
and more to come "judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like"
(Conscience of a Hacker).
As you will see as time passes
"The more you know, The more you realise how much you don't know."
(Dunno if someone else said this before me...
So this means that if anyone else didn't I
just created some Wise Words which I'll call The Rule no. 1 :o)).

Now you probably saw often the term "Lamer".
What exactly does it mean?
In my opinion a lamer is a person that knows almost nothing,
thus according to my Rule no. 1 they think they know so much
and thus don't realise how much they really don't know about.
Another way of spotting these kind of people is that they are unwilling to learn anything,
but they always want to show that they know what you're talking about.
Another cathegory is that of what I'll call Dark Crakers.
These individuals use the same techniques as the normal Cracker but they have no ethics,
no final goal.

These are not Crackers,
These are individuals that use what they know to steal software for their own interest.
If you can crack,
it doesn't mean you are a Cracker.
On the other hand if you have an ethical fundament in your actions...
If you crack you're not just a Cracker, you're more than a Cracker,
you have something that motivates you.
Again, as time passes you'll probably see that you'll begin cracking programs.
Not for the program itself, but for fun, the protection,
in other words you couldn't care less of your target.
The first time you'll realise there's another world around you
that's just waiting for you to uncover it,
is the moment when you take your first steps into The Never Ending Learning Process.
As The Mentor said:
"This is it...
 this is where I belong...
 I know everyone here...
even if I've never met them,
 never talked to them,
may never hear from them again...
 I know you all... "
this is the feeling that you live when being apart of the Comunity.

Why do we do it?
As stated in the "What drives us ?"
part Crackers do it because this way they can learn many things
about how a Computer really works,
understand CPU internals,
learn ASM (the mother language :o)).
Even if for some reasons you'll quit cracking,
you'll see that you have learned a lot comparing to what you knew before.
People have the idea that Cracking is illegal.
To one point it isn't.
If you crack a program for studying the way it was written,
and you don't distribute the cracked version,
or use the cracked version of it,
there's no way someone can tell you that you've commited a crime.
