All though it is a good idea, most any car can drive the distanse before having to park near the trailhead. I have done it twice in a honda accord ----------------------------------- From: Psychospy@aol.com Newsgroups: alt.conspiracy.area51 Subject: tikaboo drive Date: 15 Dec 1995 In 1994, a high clearance veh. was needed for the last 5 miles of the road to the Tikaboo trailhead. Then in 1995, the road was unexpectedly graded. Since then you can drive almost anything up there. A certain science writer even managed in a $80,000 sports car (borrowed, of course). We warned, however, that if you break down or are stuck in sand, it will be a LONG walk to civilization. You still need a 4x4 for the last 1/3 mile of the road, but you can easily walk this. (Then its a two hour hike from there.) Warning: A real mean rancher occupies these parts. Stay clear of his water tanks and watch out for a big water truck barrelling down the road. Tikaboo Peak and the last 5 miles of the road are usually inaccessible in the winter, until about April 1 (May 1 is best). It could be accessible now, but that could change at any moment, and you DON'T want to be caught on these back roads in any vehicle when it snows or rains. Glenn Campbell
