Computer Technology, or c't, a German Magazine claims that by exploiting
the Pentium III's deep sleep feature it is possible to reset the
Pentium III's serial number without rebooting the system. Intel has
claimed that the system must be rebooted before the number would change.
The serial number in the Pentium III can now be secretly turned on and
off without the user's knowledge by a small software program. This
program could be imbeded into a web page or sent as an email attachment
for example.

The Carrick Online Encryption Server has gone online today and guess
what it is FREE. This server can be used from anywhere in the world
with nothing more than your browser. It allows you to upload and
download files for encryption and use them as email attachments.

Domain Hosting Services, the company that is trying to replace Monolith
by offering free domain hosting, has gone beta. It looks like they only
have static host redirection working at the moment. The end results
could be interesting.

This ZDNet article targets TCI@Home but most cable modem providers have
similar agreements. The basic agreement allows the cable company to
track where you go on the net, what you see, etc.. and then sell it all
off to direct marketers.

The Computer System Security and Privacy Advisory Board will be having a
public meeting hosted by the National Institute of Standards and
Technology. The meeting will be March 16, 17, and 18 and will be held
in Gaithersburg, MD. There seems to be lots of good things on the agenda
if your in the area you may want to show up.

It looks like the mainstream press is finnally picking up on a story
that we reported on last week. There is a major security flaw with
WindowsNT that allows any local user have administrative privileges.
There is even a script available so that all you have to do is point and
click. The authors of the sploit, L0pht Heavy Industries, have also
released a patch. Microsoft has released a Security Bulletin and some
companies are now checking for this whole in their security scanning
products.
