IT Managers around the world will wake up Monday morning to overloaded
email servers as a new MS Word Macro Virus/Worm spreads across the
internet. "Melissa" attacks users of MS Outlook by grabbing up to fifty
addresses from an Outlook address book and automatically sends copies of
itself as an MS Word attachment to unsuspecting victims. While the
virus/worm does not seem to intentionally cause damage the flood of email
that it generates is enough to bog down servers essentially causing a major
denial of service. Users who do not use Microsoft products will not be
effected.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) may get increased
powers to break into personal computers, copy files and alter software on
personal and corporate computers if "there are reasonable grounds for
believing that access to data held in a particular computer will
substantially assist the collection of intelligence that is important in
relation to security." These new powers are contained in the first new
amendments to the ASIO Act in 20 years. ASIO agents will be given the
power to break in, read and copy data, alter files, hide their presence and
commit other acts while being exempt from the Computer Crimes Act.

Southern Methodist University failed twelve students who took courses to
certify them to work with Microsoft software programs (MCSE?). The students
have filed suit against the school claiming the course was two hard. While
many may feel that anyone who needs a course to learn how to use a
Microsoft product probably gets what they deserve it does raise questions
about the marketing strategies used by some educational institutions to
lure students away from their money.
