This and That
Damage estimates have reached as high as $4.7 Billion world wide says Computer Economics. (Sure would like to now how they come up with these sorts of numbers.)
Business Wire - via Yahoo

There at least five variants of 'ILOVEYOU' in the wild already including 'Mothers Day' and 'Joke'. Many many more are expected.
Wired

Was it one person or several? Maybe a plot by Microsoft to prevent the breakup? Maybe something from the Anti-Virus vendors to boost their stock? Maybe the Philippine rebels upset over recent government action wanted to overwhelm and then ban the government controlled ISP? Conspiracy theories abound.
Wired

Reporter Accused of Cyber Intrusion of Rival

contributed by Weld Pond
Wall Street Source Inc. has filed a lawsuit against its competitor IPO.com accusing one of its employees of sabotaging their computer system. The former employee who now works for the competitor has been accused of deleting important financial data from the WSS's Web site. The lawsuit says that this is the reason why WSS has to "revamp its entire computer security system". (I hope the Judge is not as stupid as this lawsuit sounds.)

Verison, formed after the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE, has sent a nasty gram to 2600 Magazine demanding that they turn over the domain name verizonreallysucks.com. In pure 2600 fashion they of course went and got VerizonShouldSpendMoreTimeFixingItsNetworkAnd LessMoneyOnLawyers.com (Likelyhood of confusion? Bwahahahaha)

  Hackers Lumped in with Criminals

contributed by xavii
Twenty years ago the term 'hacker' was meant as a sign of respect to those who knew just about everything, about one step behind the term 'Wizard' or 'god'. David Greising of the Chicago Tribune evidently failed to do any research into this history as he has equated all hackers with simple thieves. (One Readers comments: "I feel physically ill as I read this story. This article is the trash that is the mainstream media. I don't think I've ever read anything as blatantly disgusting as this article.")
