Monday night BBC's Panorama focussed on security and privacy. It included
interviews with
guys from CDC (Sir Dystic, Deth Veggie) and Michael Buen (of ILOVEYOU
notoriety). It was
somewhat balanced, also choosing to cover how much of the problem is MS'
fault. The
show also focussed on the fact that an attacker took control of some of
NASA's computers
during a critical moment when the Space Shuttle was docking with Mir. NASA
is now disputing
how much damage the attacker caused saying, "no lives were endangered".

Is it cyberterrorism or information warfare? Is it joyriding teenagers or
nation states
attacking your systems? The government can't decide if there is anything
going on besides
some nuisance attacks. Congress cannot decide whether to fund better
computer security for
the government and critical infrastructure.

Another inflamitory piece that tries to lump all people from the computer
underground into
one group, criminals. This looks like a reaction to the BBC Panorama show
which showed some
of the better parts of the computer underground - the fact that people are
willing to find
problems in our computing infrastucture and let everyone know about it.

Some readers objected to our 4th of July message pointing out that some of
the men
who signed the Declaration of Independance had slaves and were responsible
for harming
Native Americans. Others wrote in to point out that the article has some
factual
innacuracies. Below is a link to an article debunking some of the fact in
our posting.
