U.S. Sites at Risk During Middle East Conflict

contributed by laney
According to the National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), the U.S. may become a target of "E-jihad," the pro-Palestinian name for the Middle Eastern cyber battle being fought in parallel with the recently re-ignited conflict between Israel and Palestine. In response to the potential threat, the FBI's cyber crime unit has issued an assessment that warns of the possibility of U.S. websites becoming victims of targeted cyber backlash.

  Vote Swapping Site Shut Down

contributed by harvest
Numerous vote trading websites have been operating in an effort to get Nader 5% of the popular vote. It is thought by doing so, antics such as this will swing the electoral vote of certain states in Gore's favor. One of the sites in question, Voteswap2000, was recently shut down for violating California state law, a move that suggests the increased likelihood of more of these types of sites closing down in the near future. Is this type of activity ethical? Please respond to securitynews@atstake.com.

contributed by harvest
In an effort to boost global cooperation in the fight against online fraud, the FTC, in conjunction with several foreign consumer protection groups, has announced the existence of 18 new cases. These additional cases bring the overall world total to 251 cases this year alone. Primarily, cases such as these include auction fraud, ISP service scams, credit card abuse, and "web cramming," a scam where con artists offer to build web pages for free and then place unauthorized charges on victim’s phone bills.

contributed by laney
RegLand.com is suing ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and its Vice President/General Counsel for what the domain registering company is calling intimidation and defamation on the part of the committee. RegLand contends ICANN's actions have, for the most part, put the kibosh on the company's pre-registering business.

  "Erap Estrada" Worm Suspect Questioned

contributed by laney
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a teenager in the Philippines for what is believed to be a strong connection between him and the "Erap Estrada" worm. The identity of the teenager has not been released pending further investigation of his computer equipment. Looks as though authorities in the Philippines are doing everything in their power to ensure this doesn't become "Love Bug - Part Two."
