WARNINGS: This program uses features included in Microsoft's MapPoint 2004, for which
you must own a valid license, or have the trial edition installed. StumbVerter works
with both the North American and European versions, and will only generate maps for the
geographical areas you have installed in your computer. You must install StumbVerter after
installing MapPoint 2004 and rebooting your system.
The program is supplied as-is, with no guarantee regarding fitness for a particular purpose.

Introduction:
========

StumbVerter is an application which allows you to convert log files from Network Stumbler
into MapPoint 2004 maps. The map files generated are independent of StumbVerter, so you
can send them to people who have MapPoint 2004 installed, without needing StumbVerter to
open them.

Once you create a map from within StumbVerter, and you import the log file with captured
802.11b access points (APs from now on), those for which GPS coordinates have been logged
will be represented as pushpins on the map. The pushpin will contain the SSID of the AP as
it's title, and other data inside the balloon (Signal strength, MAC, WEP status and mode).

Scripting support allows you to write simple files that issue commands to StumbVerter, in order
to automatically process log files. In this mode, StumbVerter will start, execute the script,
and close if instructed. Please refer to scripting.txt for details

Installation:
========

To install StumbVerter, you need to download the latest version from www.sonar-security.com,
and execute setup.exe which is included in the .zip file.

Simply run through the installation program's steps, and you're done. You can then start StumbVerter
from the icon created in the Program Files folder, or from the desktop icon.

IMPORTANT: Install MapPoint 2004 and reboot your system BEFORE installing StumbVerter,
otherwise the program may not start correctly. If you try to load a map without MapPoint 2004 installed,
StumbVerter will display an error message.

Features:
======

Currently, these are StumbVerter's main features:
- Read Network Stumbler's wi-scan summary files.
- Import captured APs with GPS coordinates into a MapPoint 2004 map, with custom icons showing
  wether WEP is enabled or not, and signal strength.
- List of logged APs, click on an entry to center the map on the corresponding AP.
- Export data to CSV format.
- Save maps, which can be opened in MapPoint 2004.
- Standard MapPoint zoom & pan functions, aswell as drawing.
- Filtering of APs based on conditional statements, like MAC address, SSID, etc.
- Import track logs from compatible Garmin GPS receivers, which are shown as lines on the map.
- Upload APs to Garmin GPS receivers, which are stored as waypoints with the SSID as the name.

To be implemented in future versions:
- Retrieve nearest street address to logged APs.
- Retrieve nearest restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc. to logged APs.
- Import .ns1 files directly.
- Averaging of APs position & signal, to get a more accurate location.

Getting started:
==========

Easy!

1. Go out stumbling for a while, when you have a list of APs with GPS coordinates (this is important,
as of yet StumbVerter will only import APs that have been logged with GPS coordinates), export it
in wi-scan summary format.

2.Start StumbVerter, click on Map -> Create new [your region]

3. Once the map is loaded, click Import, and point to the NS export file.

4. The APs will start showing in the list on the left side of the screen. When finished, the icons
corresponding to the APs will be shown on the map. There are two types of icons, ones with
green base, that have WEP disabled, and those with red base, which have WEP enabled.
The amount of 'waves' that come out of the top of each icon show the received signal strength, so
more 'waves' equal better signal strength.

5. Once imported, you can choose Map -> Save or Save as, and save the map with icons as a
native MapPoint 2004 map file. Also, you can choose Export CSV, to generate a text file suitable
for importing into other programs.

6. Click on an AP name on the list, and the map will be centered on it, with the APs SSID displayed. If
you double click instead, the whole balloon with info will be displayed.

You have some options to customize the way the program works, for example, you can choose to
unclutter the map by choosing View -> Hide POIs (points of interest), or show the various toolbars
available. You can even use the routing & drawing functions available in MapPoint 2004!
Other options are to show or hide AP balloons, with just names or all available information.

If you click on Configuration, a window will open where default program settings are changed. For
example, you can choose to create a new map every time StumbVerter starts, or load a previously
generated map. If you enter a pair of coordinates (in Double format, i.e. 41.2342 -3.2334 would be
N 41.2342 W3.2334) and zoom value, every time the program starts, the loaded map (new or custom)
will be zoomed to that location.
