The Hebron Massacre--A Memorial History for the 27 Martyrs

top of page

On the night of February 25th 1994, a Jewish American Zionist physician decided to materialize the dream of the typical Zionist movement of annihilating the Arab existence in Palestine. Baruch Goldstein prepared for the move. It was during Ramadan when Dr. Goldstein decided to execute his old plan of vengeance.

At that time of the holy month of Ramadan, there were many people who flocked the Abraham Mosque to perform their prayers. Goldstein passed two army checkpoints at the dawn of February 25, 1994 from the northeastern gate of the mosque near privy. That privy could be the reason why Goldstein decided on that gate because he, probably, received his contemplation about Arabs from the Rabbis of Kach in Kiryat Arab where the Arabs were described as the demons of the privy. [Talmud - Mas. Kiddushin 72a ''Shew me the Ishmaelites.'-'They are like the demons of the privy.''] The privy of the mosque is important not only because it has two Israeli army checkpoints on its nearby mosque's gate, but also because it is surrounded by Israeli army posts from the east and army patrols in the west. So Dr. goldstein was acting from the deepest parts of the Zionistic ideology in liquidating the demons. But in this case and as a typical Zionist, shooting from the back was the style. Dr. Goldstein walked at least 100 yards in the mosque before he decided to choose the exact location to liquidate his demons. Dr. Goldstein positioned himself at the last row of the main hall, just opposite to the Imam's place (Manbar.) The position was not arbitrary not only because it enabled him to shoot directly at the largest number of the backs of the worshippers but also because it was supposed to have enabled him to get a fast escape or protection from the Israeli soldiers who were scattered right behind him in the northern hall "the plate" of the mosque.

Dr. Goldstein thought about the best moment to execute the plan: maximize the number of casualties and secure the escape or rescue. The best moment, of course, was when the Muslim worshippers knelt on the floor with their backs towards Dr. Goldstein.

It was first a hand grenade that he threw among the worshippers causing casualties, confusion, and possibly an invitation to the Israeli soldiers in the halls and outside of the mosque to intervene for rescue. And in no time, the automatic massacre took place with the same kind of mercy that other Zionists like Dr. Goldstein showed in the past toward Arabs.

An eyewitness told HIPRS that when Dr. Goldstein was executing the massacre and people attacked him, there was a soldier who attempted to come closer to the scene. But instead of "rescuing" Dr. Goldstein, the Israeli soldier shot his bullets in the air and then escaped from the inside eastern door of the northern hall to the previously known "women praying area." In the opinion of the eyewitness, the soldier could have rescued Goldstein by killing 5 or 10 more Palestinians, but it appeared that his personal safety was above any Jewish blood value.

There were many massacres in the history of Hebron and Jews happened to be the victims of the 1929 massacre which was committed by Arabs. But aside from numbers and ratios, there was the unique difference in all the massacres. Zionists very much planned in advance for each and every massacre. The 1929 massacre against Jews was an irrational reaction of the news coming from Jerusalem that Jews raided Muslim sites. There is no need to stress the fact that from the Jewish neighborhoods in Iraq to those in Poland, Zionists provoked local people to invite them to oppress innocent Jews to force Jews to come to Palestine.

It does not appear that the Hebron massacre will be the last one. Muslims and Jews are and will remain candidates for victimization. But the cause will always be the same:- The Nazi style laws of the Zionists occupation in Palestine.

Massacre in Hebron TIME Domestic, March 28, 1994 Volume 143, No. 13, LETTERS The murder of 30 Muslim worshippers by Jewish fanatic Baruch Goldstein at the West Bank's Tomb of the Patriarchs ((March 7)) is the Arab-Israeli conflict in microcosm. A group of Jews has moved back to ancient Jewish land, to a city with major religious and historical significance. Members of the group try to rebuild Jewish life among hostile people. Violence against them is a regular affair. They pray at an ancient Jewish site that was co-opted by others and that they were prohibited from entering until 1967. The Jews' very existence is claimed to be a provocation. As the peace talks continue, the fate of these Jews becomes questionable. They are abandoned by American Jewry, and the Israeli government criticizes rather than protects them. Faced with mounting pressure and deadly, intermittent attacks, they experience rising frustration, and desperation prevails. Only if the Israeli government makes it a priority to provide direct protection of these people's right to live in the center of the Jewish homeland can a coming disaster be averted. Scott David Lippe Albany, New York

It is sad to see a gifted Jewish physician like Goldstein commit such a crime. But it is worse for people to defend his murderous act and his ideology. Perhaps we need to realize that an intellectual gunman is much more dangerous than an illiterate armed person. Muhama Hassan Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I speak for a vast majority of American Jews in denouncing the actions of Goldstein. This man was an American who felt he and other radical followers of Meir Kahane had the right to act. Goldstein decided that no matter how much Israel wants to achieve peace, he would not let it happen. Jeff Heyman Short Hills, New Jersey

Jews, more than Arabs, will bear the tragedy of Hebron for years to come. Jews are used to suffering. They are unused to shame. But is it any wonder that Goldstein, a Jewish physician deranged by love for his murdered patients, would damn himself to prevent a peace agreement like the one now being negotiated? Goldstein may have been driven insane, but this does not mean Israeli officials who are making peace with Palestinian murderers are sane. Joshua Vogel Jerusalem

This crime has provided Israel's enemies with ammunition, aroused world opinion against us and further undermined the status of our settlements in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. The government will bear responsibility, but from a moral standpoint, a large share of the burden must be borne by rabbis, spiritual leaders and educators. Rabbi Naftali Rothenberg, Dean Institute for Jewish Research in Political and Social Affairs Har Adar, Israel

Imagine seeing your friends and neighbors stabbed, shot, axed and bludgeoned on a daily basis. Imagine sending your children to school every morning with the fear that they will not return intact. Imagine worrying about the safety of your wife whenever she leaves the house. And, most incomprehensible, imagine your government abdicating its responsibility to protect you. If you can imagine all these things, you can understand Goldstein's actions and wonder why more Jews haven't reacted in the same way. Moshe Saperstein Jerusalem

As an Israeli citizen, I condemn the odious murders committed by Goldstein. This crime was the act of one deranged man, and as such it should not be allowed to affect the peace process, so necessary for this troubled region. Rosaline Burnham Menton, France

Israeli Racists Now Hold Worship Services at Grave of Their Hero, Baruch Goldstein

Wednesday, June 17, 1998

Reuters News Service

KIRYAT ARBA, West Bank -- Moving a wet rag in delicate swirling motions, Rachel Novoselsky, a Jewish settler, wiped the dust from the stone slab over the grave of Baruch Goldstein, who massacred 29 Palestinians in the West Bank town of Hebron in 1994.

"He was a righteous man, a great hero," Novoselsky, a Russian immigrant, 61, said about Goldstein, a U.S.-born physician. He was beaten to death by Muslim worshipers who survived his shooting spree in the holy Tomb of the Patriarchs.

For Novoselsky and some other residents of Kiryat Arba, next to Hebron, Goldstein's grave has become a place of pilgrimage. The site contains a large headstone, an altar and a bench on a plaza of stones.

But the shrine could be declared illegal when a new "Law Prohibiting the Erection of Memorials to Terrorists" takes effect at the end of the week.

The legislation, sponsored by left-wing opposition lawmaker Ran Cohen, calls for the minister of defense to instruct regional commanders in the West Bank to remove all but the grave and tombstone from a memorial to a "terrorist."

However, a move against Goldstein's grave is likely to inflame passions among Hebron-area settlers, regarded as some of the most militant in the West Bank.

"There's going to be big trouble," said Novoselsky, shaking her head when asked what would happen if authorities tried to chip away at the shrine.

Goldstein's headstone points toward Jerusalem, signaling the direction of prayer for those who come to stand beside it and worship on an unshaded octagonal stone plaza.

A plastic cup of water is next to the grave - some pilgrims believe that drinking from it brings good luck.

An altar with memorial candles and a cabinet containing holy books and a coin slot for charity are on the perimeter of the grave site.

Flowers and a dozen saplings struggle to grow in the parched earth, a few yards from a dirt road ringed by barbed wire.

There is a lone bench, but for the Goldstein faithful this is a holy place where one stands to honor a savior.

"The Arabs wanted to make a pogrom, and he made sure that Jews would live," Novoselsky said, repeating the words Goldstein's defenders have used since he opened fire at Muslims kneeling during prayers at a mosque.

Novoselsky visits the site twice a week, and her ritual is a study in devotion.

Bowing, she touched the headstone and kissed her hand before putting into a yellow bucket the small stones which Jews traditionally place at a grave to mark their visit.

The woman then watered the flowers and saplings, lit a candle and read softly from a book of psalms.

After each psalm, Novoselsky put a coin in the charity box.

Moving back to the headstone, she chanted afternoon prayers, ignoring the sudden cacophony of competing calls to worship blasting from loudspeakers on minarets in nearby Hebron.

David Wilder, a spokesman for Jewish settlers in Hebron, said that, as a religious community, they did not want anything done that could desecrate a grave site.

He said he did not think violence would erupt if authorities tried to remove the book cabinet or altar, but he added: "We don't have control over everybody."

At the Goldstein grave, Novoselsky was at a loss for words when asked what she would do if the army moved in to remove the altar, bookcase and bench.

She simply fell to her knees, then prostrated herself to demonstrate how she would hold on to her holy ground.

Baruch Goldstein's Grave A Shrine for Jewish Terrorists

Arbitrator Called for Grave Dispute The Words "Holy" and "Martyr" May Be Removed If So Ordered

JERUSALEM, Wed. Feb 24 '99, (AP) - Israel's Supreme Court has called for outside arbitration in a dispute over the grave of a Jewish settler who massacred 29 Muslims in a Hebron mosque, a lawmaker said Wednesday.

Lawmaker Ran Cohen wants the grave of New York-born Baruch Goldstein removed. At the very least, he would like to see the words ``martyr,'' and ``holy,'' removed from the tombstone.

On Feb. 25, 1994, Goldstein opened fire on Muslim worshipers in the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the West Bank town of Hebron, killing 29 worshipers before being bludgeoned to death by survivors.

Over the years, Goldstein's grave in a small park in the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba, adjacent to Hebron, has been turned into a shrine that has drawn many ultranationalist Jews.

In an effort to discourage other extremists from making pilgrimages to the site, the Israeli army, responsible for administering the West Bank, has ordered the two words removed.

But the Supreme Court issued a temporary injunction in December against the changes after Goldstein's father petitioned the court to intervene.

On Monday, the court asked a retired justice to help mediate the sensitive issue, Cohen said. Court spokesman Moshe Gorali said such arbitration is not unusual.

Cohen criticized the court for not ruling on the matter but said he hoped outside mediation would resolve the issue.

``Each week people are going there to get a lesson in how to become a Jewish terrorist,'' he charged.

Thursday will be the fifth anniversary of the massacre. Peace Now, an Israeli peace group plans to mark the day with a demonstration at the grave.
