11 that a Child Protection Advisory Board with experts from related fields
has been formed to review and strengthen the Archdiocese of Washington's
policies and procedures on preventing and dealing with cases of child abuse.
The chairman of the nine-member board, Shay Bilchik, is the president
and CEO of the Child Welfare League of America ... 'Every child as a
birthright is entitled to nurturance and protection,' said Bilchik,
whose Child Welfare League is the nation's oldest and largest association of
agencies that directly help abused, neglected, abandoned and other
vulnerable children and their families. The board chairman, who is Jewish,
said members would examine archdiocesan policies, help the local Catholic
Church in 'confronting and preventing the tragedy of child sexual abuse,'
and determine if there are 'more effective methods for protecting children,
for whom the Church is a spiritual home.'"
