Egyptian analyst: Can't rule out that Mossad was involved in attack

Retired General Salah al-Din Salim, an Egyptian researcher at the Strategic Studies Institute in Cairo, said that it could not be ruled out that the Israeli Mossad was involved in the terror attack in Dahab.

"The Mossad's ability to penetrate the Bedouins in Sinai is known," Salim said in an interview with al-Jazeera. (Roee Nahmias)

Several Egyptian security experts and political analysts said that the Mossad, Israel's spy agency, was behind Saturday's attacks on the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.  Similar accusations were made against Israel in the past, particularly after last year's attack at the Taba Hotel in October and after the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

Many Egyptian security officials said at least one car used in the bombings had special plates indicating it had come from the Israeli border at Taba on the Sinai peninsula.

On Saturday, Egypt's state-run television interviewed retired army general Fuad Allam, who said that he was confident that Israel played a key role in Sharm al-Sheikh bombings. Fuad also said that investigations showed that the mastermind of the Taba attack, which killed more than 34 people, was a Palestinian "apparently linked to Israel's security forces."

He added: "I'm almost certain that Israel was also behind this attack because they want to undermine our government and deal a severe blow to our economy. The only ones who benefit from these attacks are the Israelis and the Americans."

Other Egyptian political figures and prominent journalists and editors  interviewed by Arabic TV channels made similar accusations.

Dia Rashwan, a political expert, said that Israel is the only country that benefits from such attacks.

Of course, it would be too hasty to say whether it was young people, an agent of the Mossad or an international organization, yet it's most probably the first."

Allegations of Israeli involvement in beach attacks have become a regular feature of the Egyptian press.

A member of Egypt's parliament and the editor of a state funded newspaper, Mustafa Bakri appeared on Al-Jazeera yesterday to charge that the Israelis had the most to gain from the attack.

Former Deputy Head of Egyptian Domestic Security Agency General Fuad 'Allam: Very Possible that Israel Is Behind the Sinai Bombings

Following are excerpts from an interview with General Fuad 'Allam, the former deputy head of the Egyptian Domestic Security Agency, which aired on Dream 2 TV on April 24, 2006.

Fuad 'Allam: It is very possible that Israel is behind this, because... What is peculiar about the operations that took place in Taba, Sharm Al-Sheik, and now in Dahab is that they all targeted locations frequented by Egyptians, perhaps even more than tourists. These were three cafeterias. You asked about a supermarket, but it was in fact a cafeteria adjacent to a supermarket. These three cafeterias are known to be frequented by Egyptians more than by foreigners. The same thing happened in... Maybe Taba was a little different, because the target was the hotel itself, but in Sharm Al-Sheik it was the same: Places crowded with Egyptians were targeted.

This makes me tend towards the possibility that a foreign element - the enemies, and maybe the Israeli Mossad - are behind this operation, especially since we cannot ignore the fact that all three operations were preceded by Israeli warnings to the Israeli citizens not to stay in Sinai because of the possibility of terrorist attacks.

[...]

It is noteworthy that the bombings in Taba, Sharm Al-Sheik, and now Dahab were preceded by Israeli warnings - not to the Egyptian authorities, but to the Israelis. They warn them and say to them: Do not stay in Sinai at this time. There are two possibilities: Either they analyze certain positions and conclude that operations may take place at this time and in this area, or else they are, at the very least, behind these operations. There is a third, unlikely, possibility that they managed to infiltrate some of these organizations or groups, and so they are aware of their plans at this stage.

The Usual Suspects?

The former deputy head of the Egyptian Domestic Security Agency says the group behind yesterday's deadly bombings in Dahab is not Arab Terrorists — it's Israel.
