[00:00.000 --> 00:05.660] Good morning, this is Space Rogue for the Hacker News Network, HNNCast, for the week ending May 29, 2009. [00:06.180 --> 00:08.500] Our top story this week, at least two U.S. [00:08.600 --> 00:12.360] Army servers have been breached by a group based in Turkey known online as Mosted. [00:12.600 --> 00:19.520] It is unclear if the group was able to access any sensitive information on the servers, but they were able to redirect webpages posted on the machines. [00:19.880 --> 00:25.160] The breaches occurred in January of this year and September of last year, but were only recently disclosed by Information Week. [00:25.580 --> 00:28.560] The sites seem to have been compromised by SQL injection techniques. [00:28.560 --> 00:32.640] The breaches are currently being investigated by the Army's Judge Advocate General's Office. [00:34.960 --> 00:40.260] At approximately 11 a.m. this Friday morning, President Obama should announce a Senior White House Cybersecurity Advisor, or Cyber Czar. [00:40.540 --> 00:46.260] In addition to naming the new position, Obama will release a report detailing weaknesses in the government's cyber defenses. [00:46.720 --> 00:54.260] It is still unclear where the cybersecurity chief will reside in the hierarchy of presidential advisors, or even if the position will report directly to the President. [00:54.260 --> 00:59.120] Some experts have suggested that the position should be entirely scrapped as being unneeded. [01:01.440 --> 01:10.000] High-ranking officers of the Royal Air Force of England may have to worry about being blackmailed after three hard drives containing extremely sensitive data went missing last September. [01:10.000 --> 01:23.400] The data was gathered as part of the routine vetting process of higher-ranking officers and includes details of criminal convictions and investigations, precise details of debt, medical conditions, drug abuse, use of prostitutes, and extramarital affairs, [01:23.540 --> 01:25.000] including the names of third parties. [01:25.780 --> 01:34.380] Officials at the RAF are concerned that if the information lands on the wrong hands, it could be used by foreign intelligence services, investigative journalists, and blackmailers. [01:34.720 --> 01:40.480] While the loss of the drives was publicized shortly after it occurred, the sensitive nature of the files was not revealed until recently. [01:40.860 --> 01:42.940] Of course, none of the information was encrypted. [01:43.380 --> 01:44.300] Way to go, guys! [01:46.040 --> 01:48.480] The Pentagon may be looking for high school hackers. [01:48.800 --> 01:55.620] It is expected that the White House Interim Cybersecurity Chief, Melissa Hathaway, will announce later this month a military-funded cyber challenge. [01:55.920 --> 02:02.720] This cyber challenge will be a national competition for high school and college students to test skills in attacking and defending digital targets. [02:03.060 --> 02:13.520] The challenge will be run by organizations such as the Air Force, who will host a network defense challenge, a DOD event for tracing digital intrusions, and the Science Institute may be holding a network attack competition. [02:14.140 --> 02:20.360] The goal, of course, is to identify top performers so that they can be heavily recruited by DOD, NSA, CIA, etc. [02:20.920 --> 02:24.220] Of course, the People's Liberation of Army has been doing this sort of thing for years. [02:24.600 --> 02:25.980] We'll ask to see if we're catching up. [02:26.980 --> 02:35.540] Hat X White claims he has found a zero-day vulnerability that could reveal access to all logins, passwords, and email addresses of Facebook French users. [02:36.740 --> 02:38.200] Well, it's Facebook, we expect. [02:38.740 --> 02:43.920] The U.S. military is currently working on physical touch screen devices to launch electronic attacks against enemy networks. [02:44.540 --> 02:52.640] Aviation Week has dubbed it a hack-by-numbers device that uses touch screen sliders to determine the type and severity of attacks that can be used by untrained soldiers in the field. [02:53.620 --> 02:56.860] All I can say is this gives a whole new meaning to the term script kiddie. [02:57.200 --> 03:00.140] And I can't wait for these things to show up in military surplus. [03:01.320 --> 03:06.640] This weekend, be sure to check out the Maker Faire, where hardware hackers from around the globe will be showing off their latest hacks. [03:06.640 --> 03:10.740] The Maker Faire takes place this weekend at the San Mateo County Expo Center. [03:11.660 --> 03:17.900] For more information about this week's stories and more, be sure to visit www.hackernews.com. [03:18.400 --> 03:20.400] This is Space Grove for the Hacker News Network. [03:20.400 --> 03:20.600] This is Space Grove for the Hacker News Network. [03:20.600 --> 03:20.700] A diverse unit of Internet is presented with Unimumania.
