[00:03.130 --> 00:07.790] This is HNNCast, with your host, Space Rogue. [00:08.230 --> 00:13.090] This is HNNCast for the fourth week of June, 2009. [00:13.910 --> 00:15.990] Our top story this week... [00:15.990 --> 00:18.390] Advertise with HNNCast. [00:18.610 --> 00:19.990] Sponsor and advertiser. [00:20.190 --> 00:22.650] Package is available for more information. [00:22.890 --> 00:25.430] Contact sales@HackerNews.com. [00:25.730 --> 00:29.990] Defense Secretary Robert Gates has announced a new Cyber Command as part of the NSA. [00:29.990 --> 00:33.830] The new command will be tasked with protecting the country's military networks. [00:34.150 --> 00:37.150] Civilian networks will still be handled by Homeland Security for now. [00:37.610 --> 00:43.050] The new command is meant to begin working by October this year and to be fully operational by October 2010. [00:43.710 --> 00:46.210] No mention has been made of offensive capabilities yet. [00:46.630 --> 00:53.350] Of course, the UK announced its Cyber Security Center last week and has specifically said they are hoping to develop offensive methods. [00:53.350 --> 01:01.130] While other countries, such as China and North Korea, have had similar centers operational with both defensive and offensive abilities for years. [01:01.810 --> 01:03.430] This might be the new arms race. [01:06.150 --> 01:15.890] On Monday, Iran's foreign minister spokesman, Hassan Kouskavi, accused Western media outlets of officially training people to break into government and foreign ministry computer systems. [01:16.430 --> 01:19.070] CNN has, of course, flat out denied the allegations. [01:19.710 --> 01:20.510] Listen, Iran. [01:20.750 --> 01:22.710] A few DOS attacks is not a hack make. [01:22.850 --> 01:24.690] And claiming that it does just makes you look stupid. [01:24.990 --> 01:27.210] And it makes me think you're helping shares in Al Jazeera. [01:29.330 --> 01:39.750] An underground group, presumably from Iran, known as Nobody Coder, recently took credit for defacing the webpage of the Oregon University System and replacing the homepage with a diatribe against Barack Obama. [01:40.390 --> 01:44.150] Technicians at the university are still not sure how the intruders gained access to the site. [01:48.290 --> 02:00.330] The head of Jinhui Computer Systems Engineering Company, based in Zhengzhou City, China, developers of the Green Dam censorship software, has said that his company is being harassed and is under constant attack from online vandals. [02:01.030 --> 02:12.950] Zhang Chenmin, the general manager at the company, claims they have received over 1,000 harassing telephone calls, including death threats, and that the company's website has been continuously under attack, affecting the company's customer service. [02:15.470 --> 02:17.990] More news after these messages from our sponsor. [02:21.700 --> 02:23.680] Advertise with HNNCast. [02:23.980 --> 02:26.500] Sponsor and advertiser packages available. [02:26.880 --> 02:30.820] For more information, contact sales@hackernews.com. [02:33.300 --> 02:36.960] Twitter is becoming an increasingly favorite target of malware spreaders. [02:37.100 --> 02:41.780] The most latest attacks take the form of fake email that says, Your friend has invited you to Twitter. [02:41.780 --> 02:46.620] The email then asks the user to open an attachment under the name invitationcard.zip. [02:47.020 --> 02:51.440] Of course, once the user opens the file, they are infected with a worm that attempts to send out mass emails. [02:52.360 --> 02:56.700] Another recent attack uses compromised Twitter accounts to post links to porn websites. [02:57.260 --> 03:04.740] The porn claims to require a special codec, but once you download and attempt to install it, you have been infected, and this one infects both Macs and PCs. [03:05.300 --> 03:10.840] It is still unclear how the Twitter accounts are becoming compromised, but it is generally thought to be phishing attacks. [03:11.600 --> 03:14.260] Just remember to watch where you are putting those passwords, people. [03:14.800 --> 03:15.880] Someone may get hurt. [03:16.040 --> 03:16.520] Even you. [03:17.960 --> 03:25.020] New details of the TJX credit card breach have emerged from sentencing memoranda filed by prosecuting and defense attorneys in the case... [03:25.020 --> 03:40.600] At least one of the people convicted in the recent TJX breach had more cash than he knew what to do with, spending $75,000 on a birthday party for himself, while at the same time the person actually responsible for the technical aspect of the breach received nothing for writing the sniffing program used in the attack. [03:40.600 --> 03:44.020] Just remember, if you are going to do bad things, get paid first. [03:44.980 --> 03:52.880] In addition, TJX has recently agreed to pay $9.75 million to 11 states' attorneys who settled charges brought against it due to the breach. [03:54.180 --> 04:01.740] Jeremiah Grossman, CTO and founder of White Hat Security, Inc., wants to legalize attacks on government and military computer networks. [04:02.180 --> 04:07.620] His plan is that volunteer security researchers would attack the systems in the report on the problems they found. [04:08.120 --> 04:09.120] I don't know, man. [04:09.580 --> 04:16.700] I find it hard to believe that there are enough highly skilled security researchers willing to work for free just because it's Uncle Sam. [04:17.320 --> 04:19.500] And don't forget, you still have to keep the bad guys out. [04:20.960 --> 04:23.440] And now a few quick stories that we found this week. [04:24.240 --> 04:33.760] The website of the local government in Xixiao in Hubei Province, China has been defaced after major public unrest over a suspicious death of a 24-year-old man. [04:34.620 --> 04:47.620] The Ministry of National Security in Azerbaijan has claimed responsibility for dismantling an international group of thieves who have electronically broken into several banks of the country and transferred nearly half a million dollars out of those banks. [04:47.620 --> 04:56.000] A former employee of the Mitsubishi Financial Group has been arrested by Tokyo police on suspicion of stealing the personal data of 1.5 million customers. [04:56.760 --> 05:05.300] There are numerous reports of prominent individuals whose email accounts are being compromised and fraudulent emails sent out requesting an emergency loan from the account holder's friends. [05:06.420 --> 05:12.920] The requests usually indicate that the account holder is trapped in a foreign country and needs cash immediately to get back home. [05:14.220 --> 05:20.880] Facebook has patched a critical hole that would allow anyone to view the personal details of anyone else via the edit information section of the website. [05:20.880 --> 05:24.120] The whole was originally published on FBHive.com. [05:24.500 --> 05:36.220] The website of the copyright office, ShticktingBreen in Holland, anti-piracy.nl, has had its website targeted by DOS attacks after the organization said it was going to go after a torrent site, the Pirate Bay. [05:36.540 --> 05:40.840] The foundation's director was quoted as saying it was a dictatorship of the nerds. [05:41.860 --> 05:48.600] Police have arrested 16-year-old Jason Cooper, a student at Naples, Florida High School, after an investigation of a school network break-in. [05:49.340 --> 05:52.700] This led them to the discovery of child porn on the student's computer. [05:53.640 --> 06:00.260] Tour camp is taking place next weekend, July 2nd to the 5th, at the Titan 1 missile silo in Moses Lake, Washington. [06:01.140 --> 06:04.440] Registration spots are still available at the pre-registration pricing. [06:05.360 --> 06:09.880] Prices go up pretty substantially at the door, so get your registration in now. [06:11.060 --> 06:20.160] And the last story this week is a little poem found by semantic researchers embedded in the comments of a malware they were investigating called Rinbot. [06:21.240 --> 06:26.440] Dear Symantec, For years I have longed for just one thing. [06:27.060 --> 06:30.080] To make malware with just the right sting. [06:30.740 --> 06:33.840] You detected my creation and got my domains killed. [06:34.240 --> 06:35.760] But I will not stop. [06:35.940 --> 06:37.240] I can rebuild. [06:37.880 --> 06:39.840] Well, that's the hacker spirit for you. [06:40.000 --> 06:42.120] And I'm Space Rogue for the Hacker News Network.
