07:03.740 --> 07:07.700 Sloppy Joes, the mecca where tourists seek courage and inspiration. 07:11.160 --> 07:13.480 So Americans came down here to drink. 07:14.400 --> 07:18.900 There were bars everywhere that just catered to Americans. 07:18.900 --> 07:20.400 There were dirty weekenders. 07:20.400 --> 07:24.020 Prostitution, gambling, everything. 07:24.940 --> 07:28.460 American tourists basically treated the city like an amusement park. 07:28.960 --> 07:33.840 I think planes ran between here and Miami every half an hour, and there was more than one airline. 07:34.080 --> 07:37.840 And there was also ferries between here and Key West that ran. 07:38.500 --> 07:42.840 By the 1950s, Cuba's ruled by a dictator named Fulgencio Batista, 07:43.060 --> 07:49.100 whose brutality the U.S. government ignores because he's willing to protect American business interests on the island. 07:49.100 --> 07:53.160 But then, in 1959... 07:53.160 --> 07:57.160 From his stronghold in the wild Sierra Maestria Mountains... 07:57.160 --> 08:03.760 Something happens to completely change the course of history on the island, and in the Western Hemisphere. 08:04.300 --> 08:05.660 The Cuban Revolution. 08:05.660 --> 08:11.480 Cuba's Fidel Castro emerged triumphant after two years of guerrilla warfare against the Batista regime. 08:12.040 --> 08:23.900 A group of young idealists who'd spent several years waging a guerrilla war from the Cuban countryside managed to overtake Batista's forces and seize power in a stunning coup on New Year's Day, 1959. 08:23.900 --> 08:28.440 Now Batista has fled. A new leader is on the scene. Fidel Castro. 08:29.220 --> 08:35.860 These guerrillas are, of course, led by Fidel Castro, his brother Raul, and an Argentine doctor friend named Che Guevara. 08:36.060 --> 08:40.780 An Argentine with a Botticelli angel's face and a scholar of Marx. 08:40.780 --> 08:48.860 This is all happening as U.S. officials are in the midst of a global war against the supposed threat of communism. 08:49.720 --> 08:58.040 And this is right after the witch hunts of McCarthyism, where people inside the U.S. could be blacklisted if they were even suspected of sympathizing with communists. 08:58.040 --> 09:11.040 And so when a bunch of leftist revolutionaries take control of a country just 90 miles off the coast of Florida and immediately start snuggling up to the Soviet Union, it's like the Americans' worst fear coming true. 09:11.720 --> 09:18.400 In January 1961, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower breaks off all diplomatic relations with Cuba. 09:18.840 --> 09:26.460 There is a limit to what the United States in self-respect can endure. That limit has now been reached. 09:26.460 --> 09:33.480 So the U.S. is pulling its people off the island, which is basically the final adios y hasta nunca. 09:34.840 --> 09:37.840 The assault has begun on the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. 09:38.540 --> 09:41.760 Cuban army pilots open the first phase of organized revolt. 09:41.980 --> 09:48.440 A few months later, President Kennedy deploys CIA-trained anti-Castro Cubans in the Bay of Pigs invasion. 09:48.740 --> 09:54.780 With the Castro government completely victorious over the invading rebels, there is despair and confusion among the relatives. 09:54.780 --> 10:02.100 Which, of course, was a massive failure, though it marks the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba to this day. 10:02.100 --> 10:09.980 BATISTA 10:09.980 --> Everywhere we visited in Havana had history, political or personal. 10:30.760 --> 10:38.340 Even though we were in Cuba working as journalists following the Havana Syndrome story, we kept coming across John Lee's old stomping grounds. 10:39.120 --> 10:40.720 How long did you live in Havana again? 10:40.720 --> 10:46.640 I lived here for three years with my family, from 93 to 95, while I was researching and writing my Che book. 10:47.160 --> 10:55.920 It was a really hard time for Cuba then, but we had little kids, and in some ways, it was one of those worst of times, best of times. 10:55.920 --> 10:58.800 So, this is the entrance to Nautico, my old neighborhood. 10:59.800 --> 11:06.620 It was a closed neighborhood, and it was one of the last kind of middle-class suburbs built just before the Revolution. 11:08.200 --> 11:11.720 There was a Russian woman here, she sold smuggled goods. 11:12.980 --> 11:13.740 My kids went here. 11:15.100 --> 11:16.200 It's a terrible school. 11:45.700 --> 11:47.240 Things were really bad then. 11:47.760 --> 11:50.100 The Soviet Union had fallen and abandoned the island. 11:50.100 --> 11:52.800 And 30 years of subsidies had ended overnight. 11:53.580 --> 11:54.860 And so, Cuba was on its own. 11:55.340 --> 11:57.800 The country was in a really deep economic crisis. 11:58.500 --> 12:01.240 They called this the special period in time of peace. 12:02.380 --> 12:08.320 Things got so bad that there was serious food shortages, and the average Cuban lost an entire meal per day. 12:09.060 --> 12:13.780 The special period lasted through much of the 90s, but things were at their worst when we were there. 12:13.780 --> 12:25.060 And in August of 94, there were mass protests in Havana, almost insurrectional, where people were expressing their anger in a way they hadn't done in the entire history of the Cuban Revolution. 12:25.060 --> 12:33.160 After the rioting on the Malikon, three weeks, Fidel said anybody who wanted could go, in a fury. 12:36.540 --> 12:37.800 I mean, it was shocking. 12:38.280 --> 12:42.800 Thousands of people building homemade rafts from whatever they could find to set sail towards the U.S. 12:42.800 --> 12:50.220 The massive exodus that took place that summer was known as the Bolsero's crisis, or the Cuban rafters crisis. 12:50.220 --> 12:54.220 I'll never forget coming back one day. 12:54.740 --> 12:59.120 I watched as this truckload turned out to be like two families, about 23 people. 12:59.820 --> 13:09.940 They unloaded a raft here, a pretty precarious raft, homemade, you know, oil drums and plywood. 13:10.940 --> 13:16.080 And they got on it, and the neighborhood here, the women and the kids, everybody, my kids, came, 13:16.080 --> 13:19.740 and you could see lightning on the far horizon, and dusk was coming. 13:20.440 --> 13:26.140 And they were begging these families not to go, and they pushed off. 13:26.980 --> 13:34.060 And just as they pushed off, they may have been like 10 feet out, a woman and a child jumped into the water. 13:35.280 --> 13:38.060 And they came ashore, and they were just terrified and shaking. 13:39.080 --> 13:40.480 It was Venezuela's strongman president, Hugo Chavez, came on the scene. 14:27.120 --> 14:30.520 But in 2013, Chavez dies. 14:31.140 --> 14:35.900 Venezuela's in a crisis, and the Cuban government once again is left in a bind. 14:36.540 --> 14:45.980 And this is when a number of suitors show up at Cuba's door offering to help, including the usual suspects, Russia, China, and the U.S. 14:45.980 --> 14:49.300 Everyone's looking to increase their influence on the island. 14:50.180 --> 14:51.980 This is the newer end of Havana. 14:52.560 --> 15:02.020 And as the crow flies, we're probably less than maybe a third of a mile from Fidel's well-guarded residence. 15:02.280 --> 15:09.280 After visiting John Lee's old house, we hopped in a car and headed to a nondescript residential street about a half a mile away. 15:09.280 --> 15:21.080 Typically, this is where a lot of foreigners have been given, granted residences through one of the state agencies that provides housing for diplomats and foreigners. 15:21.080 --> 15:23.780 This street is key to the Havana syndrome story. 15:24.380 --> 15:28.340 At the beginning of the block is a multi-story cement building. 15:29.960 --> 15:32.820 So retrace his steps to see where he lived 16:04.940 --> 16:09.120 and looked for any obvious signs of Cuban intelligence in the area. 16:16.120 --> 16:21.580 It's approximately 4.30 in the afternoon, which is around the time that we're here now. 16:21.980 --> 16:23.740 It's the golden hour, as they say. 16:24.440 --> 16:30.520 And he hears a cacophony of dogs barking, howling, which he thought was very odd. 16:30.520 --> 16:35.260 And then a few seconds later, he feels this intense pressure in his head. 16:35.480 --> 16:38.420 The pressure started in the head, and then the discomfort in the ear. 16:39.020 --> 16:43.240 And hears the sound, which it feels like his head is in a vice. 16:43.900 --> 16:45.320 It got really uncomfortable. 16:45.740 --> 16:48.460 It started very, very loud, like ear-piercingly loud. 16:48.840 --> 16:55.380 He thinks it's an escalation in the harassment that he had been subjected to in a very different kind of way, 16:55.380 --> 16:59.920 like his colleague, who had his car tires deflated. 17:01.620 --> 17:07.440 Remember Tony told us he thought this was just harassment, which spies deal with all the time. 17:07.860 --> 17:11.640 But he thought this was a new, very different form of harassment. 17:12.220 --> 17:16.360 After talking to a lot of my sources, what I learned before coming to Havana 17:16.360 --> 17:19.080 is that in the weeks leading up to Tony's incident, 17:19.680 --> 17:23.860 that normal spy-versus-spy harassment appeared to be ratcheting up. 17:23.860 --> 17:31.740 He arrived in Havana in mid-October, and from the moment he arrives, they are all over him. 17:32.480 --> 17:37.360 And this increased harassment coincided with the arrival of a new CIA station chief in Havana, 17:37.860 --> 17:40.600 though I can't confirm that the two events are related. 17:41.160 --> 17:44.980 Recently what I found out was that around the summer of 2016, 17:44.980 --> 17:49.140 there was an increase in the harassment, 17:49.140 --> 17:55.640 and it became more hostile, if you will, less innocuous. 17:56.540 --> 18:00.020 Rather than it just being evidence of somebody coming into your home, 18:00.640 --> 18:03.320 it became more abusive, more threatening. 18:03.320 --> 18:07.700 An embassy employee would come home. 18:08.300 --> 18:12.440 Often their houses are surrounded by a fence, a wall, 18:12.920 --> 18:14.660 so it's like a compound sort of arrangement. 18:15.320 --> 18:17.740 And when they enter the compound, in the lawn, 18:18.260 --> 18:24.620 they found knives, which have been kind of stabbed into the earth up to the hilt. 18:24.620 --> 18:27.560 Now again, this is sort of strange, right? 18:27.620 --> 18:31.420 Like maybe some kid, neighborhood kid, decided to pull a prank. 18:32.200 --> 18:33.980 They can never really know for sure, 18:34.480 --> 18:39.120 but obviously people who are trained in this believed that this was the Cubans sending a message. 18:39.120 --> 18:49.040 At one point, the person had a dog, and the dog was suddenly taken sick. 18:49.540 --> 18:51.260 They rushed the dog to a veterinarian, 18:52.040 --> 18:56.660 and the veterinarian found puncture marks from needles in the dog. 18:57.100 --> 19:01.660 The dog was in inches of dying from whatever was injected, 19:01.940 --> 19:04.100 and had to be medevaced back to Florida, 19:04.240 --> 19:06.500 and back to family members who were still in the United States. 19:09.120 --> 19:11.000 And then there were the scorpions. 19:11.820 --> 19:13.880 Sometimes, you know, they would come home, 19:13.940 --> 19:15.440 and this is something they saw in 2016, 19:16.140 --> 19:17.980 both diplomats and spies would come home, 19:18.540 --> 19:22.740 and they would find scorpions in their apartment or in their house. 19:23.480 --> 19:28.100 Sometimes the scorpions would have been partially stepped on, 19:28.440 --> 19:32.740 so that some of their limbs were broken and couldn't be moved, 19:32.740 --> 19:36.300 and the result was that the scorpions would go in circles. 19:39.120 --> 19:42.140 The wife of someone who worked at the embassy was at home, 19:42.400 --> 19:46.280 putting on her pajamas, when of all things, a scorpion fell out. 19:47.300 --> 19:50.680 When she looked inside the pajamas, she found a piece of tape. 19:51.440 --> 19:56.720 The suspicion was that Cuban intelligence had used the tape to keep the scorpion in place 19:56.720 --> 20:00.640 until she put the outfit on, but they couldn't know for sure. 20:00.640 --> 20:04.940 And the perceived harassment only keeps escalating. 20:05.380 --> 20:08.640 Before Tony arrives in Havana, one of his embassy colleagues, 20:08.640 --> 20:12.500 who I've learned was also in the CIA, has his cover blown. 20:13.000 --> 20:15.540 And immediately, the harassment starts. 20:16.280 --> 20:18.640 He wakes up to find his tires are flat. 20:19.420 --> 20:22.000 Later, someone writes a gay slur on his car. 20:22.640 --> 20:25.120 We asked the Cuban government for comment on this, 20:25.540 --> 20:26.800 but they didn't respond. 20:26.800 --> 20:36.580 Tony, of course, was aware of the uptick in harassment aimed at his colleagues 20:36.580 --> 20:38.520 around the end of 2016. 20:39.000 --> 20:41.580 And some stuff was happening to him, too. 20:42.440 --> 20:43.920 There was the constant surveillance. 20:44.800 --> 20:48.340 And he kept coming out to his car to find his windshield wiper was gone, 20:48.780 --> 20:51.860 even after he replaced it, which was hard to do in Havana. 20:51.860 --> 20:57.080 Then one day, he came home to find a recently cleaned shirt crumpled on the floor of his bedroom. 20:57.840 --> 20:59.860 A pungent smell of urine filled the room. 21:00.740 --> 21:04.100 Had someone or something perhaps peed on it? 21:04.480 --> 21:08.740 He thought maybe this was payback for having slipped his Cuban surveillance the day before. 21:09.180 --> 21:12.440 But when they peed on my That's the one that he suspected in this building on our right. 21:35.980 --> 21:39.720 At first, Tony suspects that the sound is coming from a building nearby. 21:40.440 --> 21:44.340 It's a building he believes Cuban intelligence is using to watch him. 21:44.340 --> 21:51.620 So the tall building, the five, six-story building, is about 200 feet away from where we're standing. 21:52.520 -->
