To: TSCM-L From: "James M. Atkinson" Subject: [TSCM-L] For Sale: Micro-Tel VDA-60 Raster Analysis "van Eck" System OK, this is a unit that only ex-government types will likely recognize. This is for TWO Microtel VDA-60's, which allow you to take an oscilloscope and turn it into a raster analysis system where you can tweak the horizontal and vertical sync, plus set up all kind of gating to trigger an image. The user sets this unit up, then adjusts the settings and any repetitive signal such as video can be "rasterized" on the scope screen. Yes, you actually can use this to watch TV on an oscilloscope, and yes, you can use it to see the emission leaking off computer screen, and yes, some folks get all excited and think this is some kind of van Eck or TEMPEST receiver, but in reality it is a very valuable piece of TSCM gear and is pretty much worthless for eavesdropping. The VDA-60 also contains a TDR pulse generator, which when coupled with an ordinary oscilloscope will give you a great little time domain reflectometer that you can use to trace wiring. A system includes a small Tek 335 35 MHz hand-held oscilloscope, which on it's own is worth quite a bit. The system goes into a heavy black leatherette briefcase, similar to the old style telco repair kits popular in the early 80's, and includes various fuses, cords, cables, etc, plus the original swivel style headphones, and the ** DC ** power cord for the scope as well as the normal AC cord. The full kit would also include an audio amp, probes, and couplers, and a few other minor items but they are not being offered in this sale. This VDA kit also includes an AC power cord, but also takes regular 9 volt batteries, plus an extra VDA-60 (so you get a total of two VDAs and one scope). I will not include a manual for the VDA with the sale, but will include the Oscilloscope users manual. Condition on all equipment is good, with normal wear and tear, but you may need to calibrate the system or make a minor repair due to the age , but they currently work fine. The briefcase (actually more of a small suitcase) has done a lot of traveling, and has "some character and patina", but all three latches and the hinges work fine, the foam is all in excellent shape but the outside of the case is a little scuffed up. Note that this includes *** TWO OPERATIONAL VDA-60's ***, plus an original *** 35 MHz Oscilloscope *** and this would made an nice addition to a museum as a holy relic from the very end of the Cold War, or you can tweak it up for use during sweeps. I will except reasonable offers, but will not export this unit. As usual, I accept all major credit cards, cash, checks, money orders, camels, cows, goats, sheep, gold coins, daughters beyond the age of consent, etc, etc, etc.. -jma
