THE use of protected birds by satanic sects is being investigated by police after they interrupted a blood-soaked nocturnal ritual in Madrid.

They found "possessed individuals" performing satanic rites with dissected eagles, goats and entrails after people complained about the noise from a disused abattoir in a suburb of the city last week.

Those taking part escaped by clambering out through the roof, leaving the officers to examine blood-splattered walls on which was written "Satan will conquer" and in various places the number 6.

The satanists are believed to have used protected species such as eagles.

Police are worried that they had also used bottles of diseased sliced pig, jars of animal remains and chemicals that were left in cupboards at the abattoir when it closed two years ago.

"We are particularly concerned about containers labelled 'porcine disease'," an officer said.

A neighbour said: "They were kicking up a lot of noise and had prepared a fire."
