Decode the Trillian Password Mar, 09 2002 - 11:42 contributed by: hx Trillian is all of these chat programmes in one "MSN/ICQ/IRC/Yahoo!/AIM". Trillain can be downloaded at www.trillian.cc. It has a save password function. The save password function is defult and many users do not bother to untick it. I was shocked at how they store the passwords. They store the passwords in a file with all the other users details. The defult directory which they store them in is: c:\programe files\trillian\users\*users name*\ My trillian directory is c:\trillian\users\FOSK\ The passwords are stored in ini files. My MSN details are in this file: "c:\trillian\users\FOSK\msn.ini" My msn.ini file contains this: [msn] auto reconnect=1 save passwords=1 idle time=15 show buddy status=1 port=1863 server=messenger.hotmail.com last msn=the_email_address@hotmail.com connect num=10 connect sec=60 save status=1 auto hotmail=1 ft port=6891 [profile 0] name=FOSK password=9E5FF1A54AF5ACFD03C7 etc.. what we are looking for is "password=9E5FF1A54AF5ACFD03C7" An easy way to get into someones msn via trillian is to copy this and put it in your own ini file and of course changing your email address to theres, then sign in :D (This has already been documented by "danger_illustrated@hotmail.com" at: http://www.astalavista.com/library/chatsystems/misc/trillian.shtml) But say you wanted to know what their msn password was. (Why would you want to know that? Maybe you want to check their email away from your computer and the computer you are using doesn't have trillian. So you need the password, don't you?) Trillian encodes passwords. Each character is encoded with two different characters, depending on its position. There are 16 different sets of two characters per character. It's not as complex as it sounds, perhaps I could've explained it a little bit more clearer. the first two characters of "9E5FF1A54AF5ACFD03C7" Which is "9E" and go down the first column, you will find that 9E = "m" Then the second two and go down the second column, And so on. And vola you have the password :P I made this diagram by systematically, entering "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" then "bbbbbbbbbbbbbbb" then "ccccccccccccccccc" etc. Every time the password was changed going back to the msn.ini file. Then getting the encoded password. There are only 16 columns in this diagram because the max password length in trillian is 16. Of corse going through this diagram can be a bit tedious. So with I got my brother to write a small script to do this for me. The script uses another file. The first line is a list of characters which it checks each set of two characters against. (depending on where the set is in the password). My brother did it this way, so that any characters missed could be easily added to the beginning of each line.
