New UBB(tm) 6.0 Installation - NT/Win2k

Note on uploading files: All files must be uploaded in ASCII (text for Mac users) EXCEPT files that end in .jpg or .gif that are in your non-CGI directory.

Use the instructions in this section to install the UBB(tm) 6.0 software on an NT or Win2K server.

1.	Upload all files in the cgi-bin folder of the zip file into the directory you will be using for your UBB(tm) CGI files.

2.	Upload the contents of the variables folder from your zip file into your UBB(tm) CGI directory.

3.	Create a Members directory and place the contents of the Members folder in the zip file file into that directory. If you can place this directory above the webroot, do so.

4.	Create a directory named ubb for your UBB(tm) non-CGI files. Upload all files (including the subdirectories shown) in the noncgi zip file folder into this directory.

5.	You must now ensure that .cgi and .pl are mapped to perl and that your permissions are set. Since neither of these functions can be done remotely you must consult with your host if they are not already done. Often they are not.

You can test whether .cgi and .pl are mapped by uploading hello.cgi and hello.pl (located in the help directory of your zip file) to your UBB(tm) CGI directory. Call them from a browser. If you are prompted to download them or you see an alert message then your server is not mapped properly or permissions are not correct. Ask your web host to map perl to .cgi and .pl for you. If they are unsure how to do this, provide the information in the Appendix (Setting NT File Permissions or Setting Win2K/IIS5 Permissions) to your web host.

If perl is mapped properly and you receive a "Hello world from perl 5" message in your browser, then perl is mapped and you next have to check your permissions settings.

You can test your permissions now by uploading ubb6_test.cgi (located in the help directory of your zip file) in ASCII to your UBB(tm) CGI directory and running the tests. There is more documentation on this file located in the help directory readme file. If any of the tests fail you will need your hosting provider to set your permissions for you. Documentation on permissions is located in the support area of our Web site (http://www.infopop.com). Once you have finished with ubb6_test.cgi, delete it; leaving it is a security risk!

6.	You must now set up your board by typing http://www.yourdomainhere.com/url/to/cgi/cp.cgi in your browser. Setup instructions will appear and a series of 7 fields of information to fill in and submit. If you have difficulty finding your paths use the system environmentals link or ask your system administrator for help. You can also use the file named pathto.asp located in the help directory in your zip file file to help you find your absolute paths. Upload it to your CGI directory (in ASCII) and call it from a browser. Once you have finished with pathto.asp delete it; leaving it is a security risk!

The UBB(tm) software may have your paths and URLs already filled in. They are usually correct but please check them; this will save you some time.

7.	After you have correctly submitted the basic configuration properly you will be greeted with a screen that tells you so and asks you to log into your control panel to complete your setup. Click on the link that says "click here."

8.	Before you can log into the control panel you must first create your administrator login. Look for the line above the login box that says "Please set up your admin profile by clicking here." Click on the "click here" link. Fill in all of the data fields and click submit. Review your profile and make any changes needed. Close this window now and you should see the original control panel login window.

9.	Enter the username and password for the administrator you just created and click the "Submit Identification Now" button. Welcome to your new control panel!

10.	You must now review and configure all of the Primary Settings. Run your mouse over the Primary Settings box and you should receive a menu of 11 items. Read, review, and set all of the Primary Settings carefully and in order top to bottom. You will be prompted after each screen if you forgot something. The Configurations Settings screen should already be accurate; you had to set these to access the control panel.

11.	Your board is now set up and functional. You can continue to navigate around the control panel, make forum settings changes, customize your Wordlet(tm) text, and review the rest of the UBB(tm) features or you can visit your board by clicking the link in the top right that says "forum home."

12.	The UBB(tm) 6.0 software has two new URLs for the control panel and board. To access the board, use ultimatebb.cgi. To access your control panel, use cp.cgi.
