Project Phree

Abstract / Bio

A list of things to fuck:
- -the NSA
- -your ISP
- -yo' momma

With the cooperation of hackers and non-technical volunteers alike, two of the above are possible (and as Meat Loaf said, two out of three ain't bad). Using a mesh network designed to combat economic disparity, we can also tell PRISM to fuck right the fuck off and to not forget its hat on the way out.

Speakers: Brendan O'Connor and John Linwood Griffin.

War Crimes as a Service

Abstract / Bio
Three years of international negotiations and deliberations by eleven lawyers, two academics, a bunch of editors, and an Estonian dog named Terry gave us the "Tallinn Manual"---a.k.a., cover for the world's militaries to blow up the Internet. This talk will explain why international law matters, why it's important that a bunch of non-hackers defined "attack" to only mean dead bodies, and how we can prevent certain nations from clogging the tubes with the blood of the innocent. The international law of war isn't dead---it's just sleeping. Come help wake it up.

Brendan O'Connor is a security researcher and law student who is angered by the civil rights abuses perpetrated by "civilized" governments. Dr. Griffin is a security researcher, government contractor, and rational person who plays devil's advocate and comic foil to Brendan's indignation, taking the position that sheer stupidity (rather than malice) better explains the world's problems. They're both hams, nerds, and studies in conflicted worldviews, and they occasionally join up to hack things and break assumptions.

Myiasis - Corporate Espionage & Data Exfiltration Detection System

Abstract / Bio
Synopsis: Myiasis - is a project that spawned from a presentation and book by Luke Bencie called "Among Enemies - Counter Espionage for the Business Traveler". The presentation discussed the risks of traveling both nationally and overseas with portal computing devices and sensitive data. The presentation focused on the risks of those devices being the target of data exfiltration, corporate espionage and compromise. Apparently, this happens a LOT! So lets do something about it!

Myiasis is an attempt to understand and research these risks by utilizing a combination of custom built operating systems and embedded microcontrollers to surreptitiously identify if files or the computing device has been accessed, touch or modified in any way.

Myiasis is a custom Ubuntu 12.04 LTS image that has a large number of customizable and preconfigured tools to identify operating system, network, system & user file integrity changes. Through an assortment of scripts and applications, Myiasis monitors for changes to all aspects of the system and stores them away for later review.

Myiasis also attempts to address the physical aspects of corporate espionage and data exfiltration, but using an embedded Arduino microcontroller and data collector for identifying if the system is tilted, jarred or disturbed while powered off or left unattended. In this talk we'll demonstrate the initial release of Myiasis and it's planned revisions.
