STATE OF ARKANSAS Executive Department PROCLAMATION To all to whom these presents shall come--Greetings: WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Liberty was a United States naval vessel classified as an auxillary, general, technical and research vessel; and WHEREAS, On June 8, 1967, the U.S.S. Liberty was attacked off the coast of Sinai by elements of the Israeli Defense Forces; and WHEREAS, 34 American crew members were killed in the attack and 171 were wounded; and WHEREAS, It is fitting that we set aside a day of tribute in recognition of the valiant crew of the U.S.S. Liberty; Now, Therefore, I, Bill Clinton, Governor of the State of Arkansas, do hereby proclaim June 8, 1991, as USS LIBERTY MEMORIAL DAY in Arkansas.
