The wreath was placed by Capt. Jerry Ferguson, USN; Cmdr. Ronald G.Schenk, USN, and No Greater Love founder/CEO Carmella LaSpada. The ceremony was held in Section 34, where six crewmen of the USS Liberty -- Jerry Lee Goss, James M. Lupton, Lawrence P. Hayden, David W. Marlborough, Carl C. Nygren and Jack L. Raper -- are buried. The ship, ordered to the Middle East because of impending war be- tween Israel and Egypt, was about 1,000 miles from the front during the Six-Day War, which began on 5 June, 1967. Three days later the lightly armed vessel was attacked by Is- raeli air and naval units with rock- ets, cannons, machine-gun fire and napalm. Torpedo boats then at- tacked. The hour-long assault left 34 dead and 171 wounded. Israel later said the Liberty had been mistaken for an Egyptian freighter.
