SUBJECT :          RECOGNITION OF CREW OF U.S.S. LIBERTY

WHEREAS, On June 8, 1967, the U.S.S. Liberty - while operating in 
international waters in the Eastern Mediterranean, was the target 
of an attack by Israel's war planes and torpedo boats;  and

WHEREAS, This attack killed 34 members of the Liberty's crew and
wounded 171 other United States personnel on board, in addition
to causing extensive damage to the ship;  and

WHEREAS,  The miraculous survival of the U.S.S. Liberty, through
the sustained courage of her crew in desperate circumstances--an
episode of honor in the annals of the U.S. Navy--has gone largely
unrecognized and unhonored; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, By The American Legion in National Convention assembled
in Minneapolis, Minnesota, September 6, 7, 8,  1994,  That The
American Legion urges the United States to formally and publicly
recognize by time-honored tradition with customary style, honor,
ceremony and publicity, the heroic actions of the officers and 
crew of the U.S.S. Liberty, her 34 killed in action, her 171
wounded and her decorated, including her Medal of Honor
recipient, Captain William L. McGonagle.
