"Liberty" by Jim Makris

When USS Liberty was attacked by Israel on June 8, 1967, Jim Makris was a 20-year-old seaman aboard the fleet tug USS Papago. Papago and her crew raced to the aid of the stricken ship and spent the next several weeks befriending and helping care for the wounded, short-handed and heartsick crew. Jim and his Papago shipmates stayed with the Liberty for the long trip from Gaza to the repair facility at Malta, and then accompanied the ship back across the Atlantic to her home port in Norfolk, Virginia. He has some awful memories of the damage, the carnage, and the cleanup.

Now, 32 years later, he is a successful folksinger and songwriter in New Hampshire, where he makes his home. The Liberty experience has never left him. Recently he released the first CD of his music, entitled "Liberty" after the title song of the collection, his tribute to USS Liberty which made such an impression on him in 1967.

Mr. Makris appears regularly in coffeehouses, pubs, restaurants, galleries, festivals and churches throughout New England and especially near his home in the Belmont area.
