This brochure contains directions and schedules for alternative weekday transportation service to and from the subway in the event of a strike by Metro-North employees.
A railroad that carries more than 200,000 customers each weekday cannot be easily replaced. Please keep in mind that activating an alternative service plan - providing Charter Buses and Park and Ride Locations, activating Park and Walk and Pick Up/Drop Off Points near subways - is a major undertaking, and, on the first day of a strike, may not go as smoothly as we anticipate.
Also, remember that only 50-60 percent of our daily commuters can be served by these alternative service arrangements. Still, we believe these alternatives are preferable to driving to Manhattan and will be the most efficient way to travel into New York City.
In the event of a strike, please keep your unused Metro-North tickets. We will arrange for you to receive appropriate credit for them when service is resumed.
MTA Metro-North is committed to helping our customers through this difficult time as best we can. We appreciate your patience and understanding, and please be assured that negotiations are continuing in an effort to avoid a strike.
NOTE:Many bus companies outside of New York City have not had a fare increase. The bus fares are accurately reflected on the schedules. We recommend that you bring quarters for bus fare rather than use new ($1.50) subway tokens.
The subway transfer points feed lines which can absorb additional riders. Certain lines are already crowded and will not be able to accommodate any increase.
MTA New York City Transit makes the following recommendations:
At high volume stations, the New York City Police Department will use crowd control measures to prevent overcrowding on platforms and on trains. Customers can expect lines at these stations.
Customers are strongly urged to avoid the 4 line in the Bronx, which is currently undergoing a major construction project.
Midtown East: Customers taking the C or D from Bedford Park Blvd or the 1/9 from 242 St-Van Cortlandt Park may transfer to the 7 at 42 St for the crosstown trip to Grand Central Station.
Lower Manhattan: Customers taking the 6 Lexington Av Local should transfer to the 4 or 5 Lexington Av Expresses at 42 St-Grand Central or 14 St-Union Sq. Do not transfer at 125 St, as that station is already overcrowded.
Wall Street: Customers taking the C from Bedford Park Blvd should stay on the C to Chambers Street, instead of transferring to the D Express.
Please note that due to the Manhattan Bridge construction project, downtown D service terminates at 34 St between 9:30AM and 3:30PM weekdays.
Purchase an adequate supply of subway tokens to avoid long lines. Before the strike begins, you may purchase tokens at Metro-North ticket offices (except Grand Central Terminal, 125th Street and Fordham).
Additional 6 trains will be extended from East 177 St-Parkchester to Pelham Bay Park during rush hours. All trains extended from East 177 St will operate as locals.
6 from Pelham Bay Park travel time is 45 minutes to 42 St-Grand Central.
1/9 from 242 St-Van Cortlandt Park travel time is 35 minutes to 42 St-Times Square.
C from Bedford Park Blvd travel time is 35 minutes to 42 St; D from Bedford Park Blvd travel time is 30 minutes.

Manhattan-bound car commuters are advised that the peak-period capacity will be expanded from 5 AM to 10 PM at the Henry Hudson, Triboro, and Whitestone Bridges. This will involve opening toll lanes normally closed and staffing some lanes that are usually automatic machines.
No special bus services will be available on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
Here are some guidelines to help you make your plans should there be a strike.
Do arrange to car-pool to park-and-bus or park-and-walk locations identified in this brochure.
Do buy tokens now. Available from MTA Metro-North outlying ticket offices and the Transit Museum shop in Grand Central, as well as at subway token booths.
Do carry exact change for bus and parking. Some bus operators may sell round-trip tickets on the inbound (to Bronx) trip.
Do pick up bus and subway maps at Grand Central and scope out a route ahead of time.
Do use Pascack Valley or Port Jervis lines train service if you live west of the Hudson.
Do allow plenty of time to get to work.
Don't try to park at stations with limited parking; the park-and-bus and park-and-walk locations will have more spaces and more service.
Don't drive into Manhattan; by the time you get in, there won't be anywhere to park.
Don't consider taking Amtrak. They don't have space, and tickets will not be sold at our stations nor aboard their trains.
Don't try picking up/dropping off people from the following subway stations: Bedford Park Blvd. (C and D trains), and Pelham Bay Park (6 train). Curbside space will be reserved for buses.
Don't buy Metro-Cards. They are not accepted at any of the stations served by shuttle buses.
Don't expect to be first in line. Everything will be crowded.
Don't give up. Negotiations to avoid a strike are continuing.
Call Bee-Line ParaTransit at (914) 682-7272 to coordinate arrangements for accessible transportation during a strike. Please identify yourself as a Metro-North customer who needs alternative service. Service will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Requests can be made seven days in advance.
NOTE: This service is for persons using wheelchairs only.
Limited special charter bus services will be provided for reverse peak customers (those travelling to Westchester County and Connecticut during the morning peak period, and from Westchester County and Connecticut during the evening peak period). Special charter bus services for reverse peak customers will be provided to/from Croton-Harmon, Chappaqua, Katonah, Greenwich and Stamford stations. Detailed service information is provided in the main tables along the top of this page.
Customers travelling to/from other points in Westchester County during reverse peak periods should use regular Westchester County Bee-Line bus routes which connect with the New York City subway system. These bus routes are also listed in the Hudson Line page; for detailed route and schedule information, please call the Westchester County Bee-Line Information Center at (914) 682-2020.
Buses will depart New Haven and Greenwich every hour (on the hour) from 6AM until 8PM, making stops at the above stations (including Stamford to New Canaan shuttle service) Fares for intra-state service will be $5.00 or less.
If you must drive, we recommend that you car-pool, and travel to these locations.
The following subway stations are recommended for drop-off and pick-up. These stations have ample curb space, are not congested, and in most cases offer trains that can handle additional ridership.
Customers who live west of the Hudson River and normally drive to the Hudson or Harlem lines for service to Grand Central Terminal are advised to utilize the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines for train service to Hoboken, New Jersey. From Hoboken, the PATH trains (fare: $1.00) provide service to the World Trade Center and midtown (33rd Street at Sixth Avenue). We recommend the following stations on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley Lines:
For Port Jervis Line and Pascack Valley Line schedule and fare information, please call Metro-North's Customer Information Center at (800) METRO-INFO (outside New York City) or (212) 532-4900 (in New York City).
Transport of Rockland will provide special shuttle bus service from the Park and Ride facility at New York State Thruway Exit 12 (Route 303, West Nyak) to the Nanuet rail station, on the Pascack Valley Line. Buses will depart the Park and Ride facility at 6:44AM, 7:08AM and 7:40AM. For your return trip in the evening, buses will meet the 4:30PM, 5:28PM and 6:04PM trains from Hoboken Terminal.
The TappanZEExpress bus will operate on its normal schedule between Spring Valley, Nanuet, Tarrytown and White Plains.
For more information about Transport of Rockland services, please call (914) 634-1100.
Private bus services offer very limited bus service directly to midtown Manhattan (Port Authority Bus Terminal, 40th Street at Eighth Avenue). Please call the bus operator for routes, schedules and fares.
