What is a Mind Machine?

Think of a Mind Machine as a tool that allows you to immerse yourself in new experiences. An emerging technology that allows you to explore yourself in deep meditative like states uncovering once hidden potential. The term coined "Mind Machine", has become a generic term that encompasses the full spectrum of mind tools that have surfaced into mainstream America. There are actually many types of Mind Machines:

These are all better termed mind tools. Mind tools focus on stimulating individual or combinations of auditory, visual or kinesthetic (touch) centers of the brain for a given purpose. A lot of research has been done and continues to prove the effectiveness of mind tools to accelerate learning, healing, facilitating deep meditation as well as provide a host of other benefits.

Acoustic Field Generators

Types of Acoustic Field Generators
Why Do Acoustic Field Generators Work?

Types of Acoustic Field Generators

  • sound tables
  • music beds

  • vibro-tactile stimulators

All of these devices utilize vibrations of sound at specific frequencies sent through the body. It is believed that this vibrating stimulation releases pleasurable neurochemicals such as endorphins.

Why Do Acoustic Field Generators Work?

Large portions of the brain near the brain stem are devoted to vibration processing. Your spinal chord is made up of two entire columns of nerve bundles that sense vibration and take up the entire posterior half of the spinal cord. Musical vibrations or organized sound send powerful emotional information. Often deep seated emotions, blocks or other unconscious reflections are unearthed after use. Perhaps this is why individuals often report feeling or experiencing deeply moving emotions or episodes after experimenting with a whole body vibrating device of some sort.

CES - Cranial Electrostimulation

What is CES?
How does CES technology work?
What Are The Benefits of Using CES?

What is CES?

CES is the direct feeding of low level electric impulses into the brain. Usually via a harness placed directly around the crown of the head. Some units may place a clip on your ear and feed current in that manner. Already used in many clinics to alleviate anxiety, treat depression and many other ailments, there is strong evidence to suggest that CES is effective.

How does CES technology work?

CES seems to stimulate neurons to release neurochemicals such as endorphins, nosepinephrine and dopamine. All of which are associated with memory, learning and other cognitive abilities.

CES may have an effect on the reticular activating system. The part of the brain that is believed to moderate our state of alertness and general sense of consciousness and arousal.

CES may stimulate parts of the brain that have taken a backseat to more dominant units of an individuals brain. This stimulation actually encourages use of both left and right hemispheres of the brain along with other required centers of the brain. This strengthening of the brain as a whole allows you to utilize the entire brain as a resource as opposed to some stronger, some weaker components.

What Are The Benefits of Using CES?

Improved Learning
Personality Transformation

Improved Learning

There is evidence that CES can increase brain functioning by stimulating parts of the brain not functioning at peak. In this way hemispheric synchronization is encouraged. Ultimately utilizing both sides of the brain in gathering, conceptualization and storing information.

Personality Transformation

Used in drug addiction rehabilitation clinics as an addiction fighting tool, CES has proven to have a dramatic effect on personality. Patients psychologically tested before CES use and after have yielded interesting results. Levels of self sufficiency, ego strength & confidence doubled after CES technology was utilized. In some cases improvements almost tripled.

EEG- Electroencelograph

What is an EEG?
Brain Waves

What is an EEG?

Developed in the early 1920's, an electroencelograph device can be considered one of the earliest mind tools. This technology allows us to register the waves of neural "firings" that occur between brain cells constantly. Sensors or electrodes extremely sensitive to the electrical signals processed by the mind are placed against the scalp. The firing detections of the electrodes can then be seen on a monitor to examine wave frequency changes. Reading this mind map can lend clues as to how the mind works. Using this technology, scientists have been able to locate four distinct varieties of brain waves.

Brain Waves

Beta Waves
Alpha Waves
Theta Waves
Delta Waves

Beta Waves

14 Hertz (abbreviated hz, frequency measured in cycles per second) - 100 Hz

These waves are the most powerful and dominant. This is the mental state the average individual generally functions in on a day to day basis. From focusing on daily issues to holding a conversation.

Alpha Waves

8 Hz - 13 Hz

A relaxed or passive state best achieved by closing your eyes and slowing down brain wave activity. Once you are in this state, alpha waves become dominant. In this state we become calm and begin to focus inward. The alpha state is extremely satisfying and nurturing. It is important to attain an alpha or neutral state at least once a day to reduce your unwanted stress level.

Theta Waves
4 Hz - 8 Hz

Once we sink below alpha level waves, we reach theta. An elusive euphoric and mysterious state best associated with deep meditation. Many people find it hard to reach and maintain this level. Mind Machines help you reach this state faster. With practice it also becomes easier to maintain without falling asleep. This state is much like being on the edge of sleep and wakefulness. In this state you may have many reveries (mental images) or thoughts pour forth. Much of our unconscious becomes revealed. This state is most conducive to hypnotic trance, placing mental suggestions, accelerating learning, facilitating healing and implementing peak performance techniques.

Delta Waves
Below 4 Hz

For most people, once were in this state we are either asleep or unconscious. In this level we produce large quantities of healing growth hormone which both strengthens and replenishes us. There is growing evidence which suggests that it is possible to attain this state and maintain consciousness. Well practiced (at least 20 yrs.) Zen Buddhist monk masters are said to be able to do just this, even while engaged in everyday affairs! With the help of Mind Machines and practice, it is possible for an individual to benefit from this state and learn to attain it in significantly less time than an accomplished Zen monk.

Why Use An EEG?

An EEG alone wouldn't constitute a mind machine. Because by itself it doesn't place you in a deep meditative state or directly exercise your mind. An EEG is more of a monitoring tool, a window into the mind. Through the use of EEG as a biofeedback device we can than fully benefit from this window. An individual can be trained to reach a theta wave state by being made aware of when they're actually "there. The EEG unit may create a tone or ring when it detects a theta like wave pattern developing. In this way the biofeedback device gives us feedback and allows us to monitor our performance. Ultimately helping us reach mind states that are optimal.

Flotation Tank and Sensory Deprivation

A flotation tank is a large "sauna like" encased container filled with water and a few 1000 lbs. of epsom salt. The casing filters out all light and sound, but continues to allow air into the tank. This sensory deprivation tool encourages an individual to look deep within. The basic idea is to deprive the body of all sensory stimulation refered to as sensory deprivation. If you open your eyes you will only see pitch black. Because the casing is sound proof you hear nothing external. Your kinesthetic perception (feeling or touch) becomes lulled into oneness with the water as you float. You no longer feel immersed in liquid but rather feel a part of the liquid. With four of your five senses peacefully unstimulated your hungry mind begins to find stimulation by looking within and so all that remains is a close sense  non-corporeal (not of matter) or simply conscious being.

Why does flotation have such a powerful effect
on the mind and body?

Because of Sensory Resonance

Because the mind is always seeking stimulus, when it receives nothing begins it begins to listen feel, thing and see (with the minds eye) inward.  The reticular activating system responsible for our arousal and attention levels begins to receive very little information by way of our senses. Originally the purpose of this portion of our brain might have been to warn us of suddenly changing stimulus. Such as the coming of a tiger or other moving beast of harm. The reticular is very capable of detecting stimulus and yet when it does not detect any changes via are senses it begins to search for more subtle changing stimulus. AS it continues to "search" and detect nothing our level of arousal becomes reduced (the brain feels there is no reason to be as alert).

This can be verified by EEG readings that show a decline from Beta Waves to as slow as Delta.

We are hardly aware of how much information our brain must constantly process not to mention filter out. Often concentration is made difficult when we are over stimulated. You probably wouldn't be able to study beneficially while at a party with people screaming and music blasting from the concert sized speaker directly behind you. Your reticulars job along with other components of your brain must decide what to filter and what to retain. With close to nothing to filter, in a flotation tank the immense amount of focus and energy put into the filtering process can be more effectively used to simply think.

Hemispheric Synchronization and Set Point

What is a Mind Machine?

When most people refer to mind machines they are commonly refering to this type of tool. Most light/sound mind machines send specific sound frequencies into your ear via head phones and flicker programmed light patterns into your eyes via glasses with LED's or some kind of light emitting device built into the frame. Through the use of binaural beats and brain entrainment, the light sound combination creates specific brain waves and is an excellent tool for utilizing peak performance inducing techniques to help an individual meet their desired goal. A light sound mind machine has many benefits.

What Benefits Can You Get From Using A Mind Machine?

It can exercise the brain and make it healthy and more powerful, reduce stress and produce deep relaxation, boost IQ, enhance creativity, accelerate learning, increase memory, inc. sexual pleasure, produce peak performance states, eliminate substance abuse problems, overcome depression and anxiety, alleviate pain, boost immune function, change or eliminate unwanted habits and attitudes just to name a few.

Brain Entrainment

Light and Sound Machines utilize research conducted by numerous individuals over the past 50 yrs. In the mid 1930's, scientists began experimenting with flickering light in a subjects eye. They found that when they strobed light at 10 Hz in an individuals eye they discovered from EEG readings that the brain became entrained or fell into a 10 Hz frequency state. Remember this is an alpha state. From the 30's to 70's other pioneers Sidney Schneider (radar technician), W. Gray Walter (neuroscientist), William Burroughs (American novelist & experimenter) all began experimenting with the effects of light flicker on the brain.

A premise developed is that a light flickered into an individuals eye will place you into a trance like state and encourages the brain to function at the same frequency as the rate of flicker. Its this effect that is referred to as brain entrainment.

Binaural Beats

Sound can be an extremely effective way to guide the mind into specific mental states or levels of brain wave activity. One theory used within light & sound technology in effect created by binaural beats. When your left ear rec. A signal of 200 Hz. and your right ear hears a signal of 210 Hz. In an attempt to make sense of the conflicting sounds your mind receives the two hemispheres of your brain registers a phantom third signal (not the actual signal) or a binaural beat. This binaural beat is registered as the difference of both frequencies. In this case 10 Hz. This beat frequency. isn't an actual signal but a signal created by both hemispheres working in synchronization to register the conflicting signals.

When precisely controlled tones are combined in the brain the olvary nucleus becomes "entrained" to resonate to the binaural beat. Once entrained, it sends a signal to the cerebral cortex thereby mixing with existing patterns of neural activity ultimately producing altering & mind expanding state changes.

Hemispheric Synchronization and Set Point

It is known that by producing certain frequencies the brain can be entrained into a state of hemispheric synchronization. Within this process both the right & left hemisphere are coaxed into working together & with continued use of light/sound technology where there was once a dominant hemisphere, the brain is encouraged to use & stimulate both within the thinking process. Therefore where there was an old dominance of one hemisphere in thought, a new set point has been reached. This set point is the point at which the left and right hemisphere interact. In some individuals the set point can be a predominantly dominant left hemisphere and partially involved right. Through the use of a mind machine an individual can attain a new set point at which both hemispheres are partially engaged in the thinking process. This new set point is the point of optimal thinking or a peak performance type state.

The ear not only hears. the vibrating waves it receives stimulate sensory nerves in the inner ear. then the signals are received by the hearing centers and is translated into sound. Some signals reach the cerebellum where motion, balance and equilibrium are controlled. The Limbic system , responsible for emotions & the release of hormones & other biochemicals is also affected. The cerebral cortex responsible for higher functions of consciousness is affected. In the same manner that a piece of music can have a personally emotional affect on you, the sounds our signals receive can stimulate, recharge and expand the entire body & mind.

Ganzfeld Effect

Through the placement of goggles or glasses with a single unvarying color coating (preferably white) painted on the interior of the frame, the eyes begin to view an unchanging stimulus and react accordingly. No stimulus, no arousal. With reduced external stimulus the brain or in this case the part of the brain that "sees" is trance into a deep meditative state allowing for inward introspection. This phenomenon is referred to as the Ganzfeld Effect.
