Bill Cheek, recently arrested for selling a "data slicer", has released a letter to his friends and supporters. A statement
from the US Magistrate judge in Brooklyn is included. This statement is
so bogus. Any reception of any public service radio communication falls
under the statement by the magistrate. The word surreptitious is so
misleading here. This is the way receiving
radio signals broadcast works. The sender doesn't know who is listening.
Duh! I guess I am surreptitiously listening to WFNX now. Oh no, I just
blew my cover! If this court case flies then all packet radio, WeFAX, and
rtty equipment is illegal.

For those that don't know Bill Cheek is the author of numerous scanner and
HAM radio modification books, he is also a heavy participant in rec.radio
scanner and alt.radio.scanner as well publishes the The World Scanner
Report.

Christopher Thomas Daniels, of Perth Australia, was fined $2500 and
ordered to pay $500 restitution to an ISP. Daniels pleaded guilty to
using 37 internet accounts from Vianet, to steal $50 worth of internet
access. A few interesting quotes in this article. Another in the
disturbing trend of making an example.

Now instead of carrying around a hardware token generator like SecureID
you can get it all on your Palm Pilot. Now if that isn't secure I don't
what is.
Security
Dynamics
Speaking of SecureID, a really misnamed product by the way, check out
this paper we found hiding on NAIs web site about the weaknesses and
insecurity of SecureID. After you read this you will probably realise that
there is nothing secure about SecureID.
Security
Vulnerabilities in SecureID
- Sorry, but this is in raw postscript format. Still a _must_ read if you
use SecureID.

A Tampa, FL based magazine has printed a ludicrous cover story on hackers
and hacking that just adds to the injustice of the entire media
sensationalism of the word 'hacker' Using what appears to be an AOL or
IRC chat room as a source this turns out be just another example of a
'journalist' reporting on something he knows absolutely nothing about.

Cracked!
A rather slow day in the rumor mill. Only one site was sent to us that was
supposedly cracked.
