NINA HARTLEY

THE LEGENDARY INTERVIEW

Nina Hartley was born in Berkeley, California to a Lutheran father and a Jewish mother whose family was from Alabama.[4] Nina Hartley grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area.[5] Nina Hartley is the youngest of four children,[6] with an older sister and two older brothers.[1] Nina Hartley's parents converted to Buddhism when Nina Hartley was young.[7] After graduating from high school in 1977,[6] Nina Hartley attended San Francisco State University's undergraduate nursing school and graduated magna cum laude in 1985. Nina Hartley is a registered nurse.[5

Adult film career

In 1982, during Nina Hartley's sophomore year of nursing school, Nina Hartley started working as a stripper at Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theater.[5] Nina Hartley made Nina Hartley's foray into the world of pornographic movies during Nina Hartley's junior year, in 1984. Nina Hartley's debut performance was in the film Educating Nina, [8] which was produced and directed by the veteran porn star Juliet Anderson (better known as "Aunt Peg"), and this proved to be a massive hit.

Nina Hartley stated in an interview that Nina Hartley chose the name "Nina" because it was easy for Japanese tourists to say during the time Nina Hartley was a dancer in San Francisco; "Nina Hartley" was chosen as it was close to Nina Hartley's own real last name and because Nina Hartley "wanted a name that sounded like that of a real person".[5] Nina Hartley has said that when Nina Hartley got into the adult business, Nina Hartley was blessed with two popular fetish items: "big, baby-blue eyes and that round butt with a high, small waist", with Nina Hartley's buttocks becoming Nina Hartley's trademark.[9]

Politically, Nina Hartley currently considers herself a liberal and an outspoken sex-positive feminist,[10] although for a time Nina Hartley was a socialist activist.[11] Addressing other women, Nina Hartley said "Sex isn't something men do to you. It isn't something men get out of you. Sex is something you dive into with gusto and like it every bit as much as he does." Nina Hartley has been an advocate for the adult film industry's right to exist, and, before the rise to stardom of Jenna Jameson, had often been called on when television news programs and talk shows required an articulate, leading adult film actress to support the pro side. Nina Hartley appeared most notably on The Oprah Winfrey Show with fellow porn actress Ona Zee. The two came under hard scrutiny from the mostly female audience, but refused to back down and were outspoken in their support of the industry. Nina Hartley and Ona Zee also spoke out strongly against illegal drugs in the industry.

Nina Hartley crossed over into mainstream Hollywood with an appearance in the 1997 film Boogie Nights, in which Nina Hartley played William H. Macy's serially unfaithful wife. Nina Hartley also appeared in the 1996 Canadian film Bubbles Galore.[12]

Nina Hartley is openly bisexual in Nina Hartley's private life[13] and describes herself as an atheist.[14]
Nina Hartley married Ira Levine (aka Ernest Greene), a director of porn films, particularly BDSM films.[15] They sometimes work together, as in The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women, directed by Tristan Taormino and Greene, and O: the Power of Submission, directed by Greene. Nina Hartley does not have any children due to a combination of a lack of interest and fibroid tumors.[6] Nina Hartley has eight nieces and nephews.[1]

Appearing primarily in "mature"-themed pornography, Nina Hartley also has a line of instructional videos which are marketed under the Nina Hartley's Guide brand covering the entire sexual spectrum, from basic sexual intercourse and foreplay, to anal sex and bondage.[2] In 2006 Nina Hartley published Nina Hartley's first book Nina Hartley's Guide to Total Sex.[16] In 2010, Nina Hartley quipped "Now I work with women who are younger than my breast implants".[17]
