Scientific Interests

I am a Wellcome Trust Prize Ph.D. student under the supervision of Professor John Jefferys. My research is focused on Gamma (40 Hz) oscillations in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. The techniques I use (or will use !) are:

  • Extracellular and intracellular electrophysiological recordings from  hippocampal slices
  • Recordings from identified pairs of neurons using IR-DIC microscopy

Academic Background

My first degree was a B.Sc. (Hons) Physiology & Sports Medicine obtained at the University of Brighton. Prior to starting a Master of Research (M.Res) degree at the University of Manchester I took a year out in the "real world" to work as a Clinical Physiologist at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. During my M.Res in Neuroscience I worked on three 12 - 14 week research projects primarily focused on Parkinson's disease and neuromuscular transmission under the supervision of Drs. Jon Brotchie, Fred Cody and Tony Wareham. My projects ranged from 'molecules to man' and were titled as follows:

  • D2 dopamine receptor modulation of striatal cAMP synthesis
  • Tonic and phasic vibration reflexes in Parkinson's disease patients
  • Electrophysiological effects of Phoneutria nigriventer venom in skeletal muscle

 Personal Interests

My personal hobbies are basically any sport you care to mention (within reason !!). My main interest is playing and watching Rugby Union. As a Loughborough man (born & bred) I am a keen supporter of Leicester Tigers R.F.C and Leicester City F.C. I am also not averse to game of golf, cricket or squash. I enjoy sampling (for purely medicinal purposes you understand !!) real british ales.
