Simon B. CollingPrevious: Research Fellow, Neuroscience Unit, Department of PhysiologyNow: Trainee Systems Engineer, Electronic Data Systems (EDS, UK) My backgroundMy first degree was in Physiology and Biochemistry at the University of Southampton (UK). I then studied for a PhD in Neurophysiology working for Professor Howard Wheal in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Southampton. Much of my PhD research concentrated on the mechanisms underlying the kainic acid model of epilepsy. Continuing in this field, I joined John Jefferys' lab in 1992, which then was based at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, London. I also became involved with some of John's other projects, including research into the mechanisms underlying Prion Disease and Brain Waves. At the end of 1995 I moved up to the University of Birmingham with John to continue with this work. My futureHowever, for a wide variety of reasons, it became increasingly apparent to me that a career in academic research was not for me. I therefore decided to make a career change into the field of Information Technology. I found that a switch to this new, seemingly unconnected, field was surprisingly easy, and I obtained a position with one of the largest IT companies, EDS. Starting in August 1997, I will train as a systems engineer, after which I could be involved in systems analysis, programming, consultancy work, management, systems integration .........
