SPECTRUM ANALYZERS: NEWS |
This is a list of news, loggings, and current events.
Dec 4/97: Space applied for at Geocities. Chat room applied for at Parachat. Website created & operational.
Dec 5/97: During the 08:00h radio test on Coquitlam Fire's dispatch freq, the last unit to check in was "Forensic Security" at the Forensic Psychiatric Institute.
Dec 17/97: New Westminster PD's MDT system is now running. Abbotsford PD & FD are getting a new rptr to cover Sumas Prairie and Matsqui Prairie. This was formerly covered only by cellular phone. Unknown if existing freqs will be simulcast (similar to the Deas Tunnel Hwy Patrol rptr), or they will be on different simulcast freqs (similar to Surrey RCMP South Dispatch).
Dec 20/97: Coolfingers reports that the Lower Mainland Fire Depts are adopting a region-wide Radio Code system. He is attempting to procure a list.
Jan 21/98: Mobile1 reports that VTV has ditched their VHF radios, and are now on the small Motorola Seymour trunk, with phone-patch access.
Feb 9/98: A drug interdiction operation ("joint" task force?) will be targeting the pipeline between BC and Washington. Start keeping a scan bank with Canada Customs, US Border Patrol, Vancouver RCMP, and US DEA freqs handy.
Feb 15/98: I spotted UHF colinear antennas on Quiring Towing's trucks yesterday. I suspect they are on the Radio Contact UHF trunk on Taggart Peak (Sumas Mtn), as many wide-area users in the Fraser Valley have gone that route. I have confirmed that Mike's Watchman Service is on this trunk.
Feb 24/98: Mobile1 reports West Vancouver PD running a simulcast test of their new 800 MHz system on their VHF freq (141.900 MHz). Freqs, system, and emission type unknown.
Mar 9/98: Mobile1 logged the following fire link freqs. These freqs are simulcast with each other, and link the Capital Regional Fire Dispatch with the individual FD's VHF freqs.
413.5875 links CRFD with Otter Point, Willis Pt, Sooke, East Sooke, Langford, and Piers Island.
411.8125 links CRFD with Saltspring Island, Shirley, Saturna Island, Mayne Island, Pender Island, and South Galiano Island.
The FD's VHF freqs are not always audible in the Lower Mainland, but the link freqs enable us to hear all the action.
Mar 31/98: Abbotsford PD is now on CDPD.
Apr 20/98: Air-1, the local RCMP helicopter, has been commissioned to assist all the local RCMP and city police forces for the purposes of shutting down Code-4 chases and similar incidents. Also, Surrey RCMP is no longer on MWS; I do not know what they will be replacing it with yet. Somebody has posted a FLEX pager decoding program on the 'net; there is a link to it on the LINKS page.
Jun 6/98: Mobile1 reports that Delta PD and New Westminster PD are dumping their CDPD systems, citing loss of data and unreliable performance. They are planning to switch to the Vancouver MDT system (presumably the new one). Mobile1 says the RCMP are considering this as well. Bonzo nailed Surrey RCMP on 891.5375 a few days ago with his Scout, and reports that this appears to be a fixed frequency. This is in the cellular band so you'll need a modified scanner for it.
Oct 2/98: CLEU is being disbanded; the Attorney General wants to start a new law enforcement service to replace it.
Oct 17/98: VPD Spcl-I is up on "Fido" phones; these are dual-band 1.9 GHz/800 MHz digital PCS units. Also, a team of investigators will be in Vancouver shortly while investigating activities that took place during APEC; they are rumoured to be on VHF (new assignments). Look for dark suits with radios, and keep your freq counter handy!
I have found that I am too busy with other projects, so this website is being put on the backburner until further notice.

From the December Comdex PacRim '98 mail-out, page 9: "Rather than be deterred by firewalls, uninvited consumer enthusiasts (aka hackers) view firewall-like point solutions as the crunchy outside to a tasty cyber snack." Ha-ha! Sound familiar?
Email tagline: "Windows 95: A 32-bit graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8-bit operating system originally encoded for a 4-bit microprocessor by a 2-bit company who can't stand 1 bit of competition."
