Thanksgiving

"Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, among other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed upon our governor, and upon the captain, and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

Edward Winslow, Dec. 11, 1621, in A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth (Mourt'9s Relation: A Relation or Journal of the English Plantation settled at Plymouth in New England, by certain English adventurers both merchants and others.) Dwight Heath, ed. New York: Corinth Books, 1963, p. 82.

" After the Pilgrims' arrival, Native Americans in New England grew increasingly frustrated with the English settlers' abuse and treachery. As a result, Metacomet (King Philip), a son of the Wampanoag sachem known as the Massasoit (Ousamequin), called upon all Native people to unite to defend their homelands against European encroachment. The resulting "King Philip's War" lasted from 1675-1676. When Metacomet was murdered in Rhode Island in August 1676, his body was mutilated. His head was displayed on a pike here in Plymouth's Post Office Square for more than 20 years. One hand was sent to Boston, the other to England. Like many families of the Native American combatants, Metacomet's wife and son were sold into slavery in the West Indies by the English victors."

  YTCracker Takes Out Gov Sites

contributed by c0nd0r
Claiming a lack of security as the reason YTCracker has defaced the sites of NASA's Goddard Flight Center international page, the Bureau of Land Management's National Training Center, and the Defense Contracts Audit Agency. He claims the admins of the sites where warned beforehand of the vulnerabilities but chose not to patch the holes. (On Monday HNN will publish an exclusive article by YT Cracker about the reasons for his defacements.)

  ParseTV Back On the Air

contributed by ewollensky
ParseTV, the weekly hack/phreak streaming video show, will be back on the air today (Wednesday). ParseTV went dark several weeks ago after the show's host Shamrock and the producer parted company. The show returns today with a new host and several guests. The show is scheduled to feature Dark Lord (Bruce Fancher), who will discuss the resurrection of MindVox, Izaac Falken, current co-host of Off The Hook, Sangfroid, who will give out information on Krystalia's untimely passing, and Cancer Omega, who will talk about the fine work being done by the Attrition Staff. The web site for ParseTV is still in a little bit of a mess and the show may not be available for streaming live at 4pm EST but it will definitely by archived for your viewing pleasure. (Wow, impressive, with this lineup of guests we may actually learn something from this new version of the show.)

  English Conservatives Blame Hackers

contributed by pr0file
Attempting to divert attention away from its 'foreign donation' scandle the Conservative Party in England has called in Scotland Yard to determine if its bank accounts have been electronically manipulated. The party feels that details about its bank account recently published in the Times could have only come from 'hackers' inside the Royal Bank of Scotland. (Must have been those evil Hackers, couldn't have been an employee or someone fishing your bank statements out of the trash. There is no evidence that says otherwise so it must have been the evil hackers.)

Canadian Student Arrested for Downloading Software

contributed by Evil Wench
A student at the Elk Island public school division east of Edmonton in Alberta Canada has been caught "trying to download hacking software". This article does not say if he was successful in his attempt or what he planned to do with the software or even what the software was. The student was charged by the RCMP with unauthorized use of a computer. (You seldom see ignorance levels this high.)
