Hellschreiber is an asynchronous transfer mode where the signal is discretely coded. This means two things:
The hellschreiber was invented by Dr. Rudolf Hell in 1929. It was used by the Germans during WW2 and some receivers was built by the British and Americans to intercept enemy communications.
LA0BX Sigfus has programmed a HELL schript program that uses a JVFAX or HAMCOM modem. This is available at the SARTG program bank. The program is called HS-V9610.zip, and may be downloaded by clicking here.
The annual Hell contest is arranged by DARC and takes place first full wekend of October for HF, and the following Thursday on VHF/UHF. Click here to get the rules.
