Notes:  Stank is nothing but an AI algorithm.  Asterisk Gentoo and Ipods again.  Email about ppc6700 registry hacks.  EvDo network gets pretty fast network speeds.  Stank's mini review of the Treo 700w.  Follow up email on database support for Ruby on Rails.  Stank has moved, has no free time and lives in an igloo.  message of the day is: "hacking is suppose to be fun!".  BR has been printing a lot somewhere in the range of 10,000 pages.  Topic was inspired by the attacks from the internet at large on the binrev servers.  Exploit has been released for invision boards.  Stank took the forums down only as a precaution the forums were resently patched and the exploit wouldn't have worked anyway.  Is commericial software or open source software inherently more secure?  update and patch all software that is running on the box.  Minimize all the points of attack only have services that you need running on the box.  Control panels are used to keep a webserver updated such as cpanel and webmin.  Also look for shell access when looking for a good web host.  Control panel software also has to be updated.  BR is taking a break from the show and getting married.  Stank will be taking over for the rest of season 3, Stank is thinking of doing a format change for the next season of the show.

Notes:  tehbizz has been writing a few articles check out 561 binrev meeting site, if you want to start your own binrev meeting email 411 -at- binrevmeetings /dot/ com.  HackTV is now it's own separate site/domain.  check out plain-text.info, the HackTV link on the main page is now forwarding properly, also check out the DDP Blawg (Blog).  Email about DBAN when a file is deleted the pointer is just deleted not the file, the file is only really "deleted" when it is rewritten to.  EnCase is the industry for forensic recovery and it is very hardware intensive.  Common standards for wiping a drive are 3 pass 7 pass and 35 pass.  EnCase is not the end all be all as people believe it is a huge program that supports almost every file system known to man as well as a scriptable api based on java and C++.  TCT is an open source solution for forensic recovery it was the first competitor to EnCase.  The Sleuth Kit is based on TCT, autopsy is it's front end, the first step in a forensic investigation is to make a forensic image of the hard drive.  A write blocker is used to ensure data integrity.  Encase includes Fastblock SE.  FIRE is a linux live cd for forensics.  Helix is another security live cd with a windows partition on the disk for live data analysis.  Incinerating the drive is the best way to make sure data on a drive is not recoverable.  shred is another tool that is found in most linux distribution and is for file deletion but has limitation.  THC secure delete another tool for secure deletion of files.

Notes:  Seal (a.k.a. Julian) is co-hosting this week talking about his piracy documentary and can be found at piracydocumentary.com.  Seal has a few projects on the backburner and it has become a hobby for him.  Stank admits he doesn't have any video editing skills.  Seal's documentary isn't quite finished yet.  Creative Commons music is not free if you submit a movie to a film festival.  The piracy documentary took about a year to complete, originally the movie was going to be an hour long rant.  Jason Scott also did a documentary recently the BBS Documentary.  Creative Commons is not necessarily public domain.  HackTV, Binary Revolution Radio and anything else released by DDP is under Creative Commons but it can be freely distributed as long as it it is unaltered and no profit is made on it.  Seal and Jason Scott will be presenting at HOPE this year.  Cimmerian from Rant Radio also makes an appearance on the documentary.  A majority of the Internet radio stations are operating illegally due to certain royalty laws.  Stank wants to be on American Idol with decoder.  The U.S. puts pressure on other countries to ratify piracy laws.  In Canada the most a politician can receive from a company for a campaign is $1,000.  In the United States in the 2000 election, Warren Hash the guy in charge of copyright reforms, received $300,000 for his campaign by the big four in the entertainment industry.  There are to many middle-men in the current entertainment industry.  Apple makes 10 cents per download off of it's iTunes service.  Greed, not piracy will kill the entertainment industry.  Movie downloading service is an untapped market.  Closing credits have ANSI art done by Zero.  Stank rants about Star Wars.  Email about obtaining court documents.  Most likely can obtain documents from court house.  Check out PACER for online court documents.  Stank doesn't stash pr0n.  Droops use to have quite a pr0n stash, but his wife found it.  Droops tells his story about his relationship video and his convoy experience.  You can record on a unmodified iPod but at a very low bitrate.  Site of the week is piracydocumentary.com.




Episode 153 - Windows Vista Beta 2  (Airdate: 06/20/2006)

Notes:  Stank is on high speed this week.  What does the future hold for BinRev Radio?  The install of Vista is pretty straight forward - easier than XP.  Stank installed Vista Beta 2 on a 3.0 GHz P4 with 512 MB of RAM with no video accelerator.  Vista seems OS X like.  It comes with a mail client and a calendar app built in.  Icons and menu system have changed.  Windows Live seems OS X like as well.  Vista's gadgets are little apps that you can have on your sidebar or desktop.  Vista is another step closer to blurring the lines where the desktop ends and the Internet begins.  Stank explains his pseudo-crash and the self-healing ability of Vista.  A new hardware rating system seems like a good idea.  The overall score on the hardware rating is absolutely useless.  Windows marketplace is a lawsuit waiting to happen because it is so tightly integrated with the OS.  Windows Media Player can also be used to buy music from a streaming source.  Microsoft is now in the business of selling computer peripherals.  Imagex is the new imager that is bundled with the Enterprise Edition of Vista.  You can apply patches to a image without booting into it.  Images are hardware independent.  The imager only works with Windows unfortunately.  WinFS will not be included in the Vista release, NotTheory drops by and explains his Vista experience in VMware.  Vista's install is extremely fast.  new 3D screensavers.  Percentage calculator.  Email about phone phreaking.  Site of the week cyberspeak.libsyn.com for forensic talks.

Notes:  Welcome to the last episode of season 3.  Elonka joins Stank for this episode.  OMGHAX...the second part of Kryptos was wrong!!.  There is a Yahoo! Kryptos Group that is open for anyone to join.  Someone spoofed Elonka's email address.  Stank thinks Yahoo! Mail is a better option versus GMail.  Elonka thinks that Gmail's contact feature is a bit clunky.  Elonka explains a scam that is used on Amazon.  In the trial of Dan Brown the judge leaves a code in the trial ruling.  Elonka explains the Priory of Sion.  Dan Brown has four CDs out and has one of his songs in the Da vinci Code.  Stank rants about the TV show Treasure Hunters.  Elonka wants them to show how they solve the puzzles.  Wikipedia is the soap opera of the Internet.  Wikipedia is a group-ware project that is maintained by the community.  Wikipedia has teams of accuracy editors that edit change and delete unaccurate information.  An explanation of the flame wars that occur on Wikipedia.  What is Wikipedia worthy?  Stank is a big fan of Lost.  The first episode of season four will be live at HOPE 6 and there is a BinRev meet-up after the show.

Episode 164 - Tunneling and VPN  (Airdate: 09/12/2006)

Notes:  Stank is hosting with Verbal on the second part of this double header.  Verbal gives his Mentorship Program update.  Email about security concerns about Gmail.  Verbal talks about encrypting Gmail messages.  Most web based email providing companies only encrypt username and passwords not actual email messages.  Email about VoIP as a backup phone line.  Verbal was talking to his mom the other day.  Recap of tunneling concepts.  Verbal discusses tunneling IP over DNS.  Stank explains IP address resolution in context with a VPN.  Verbal explains virtual addressing with VPNs.  Full tunneling sends all data to the virtual network connection.  Split tunneling all the traffic meant for the domain of the VPN would be tunneled over the virtual connection all other traffic goes out your normal network connection.  In a split tunnel you become a "bridge" between the two networks which poses some security risks.  Verbal talks about logging into multiple VPNs.  IPsec encrypts the the whole packet including headers only the VPN gateway can see the actual packet.  SSL tunneling just encrypts the data useful for web proxies.  PPTP L2TP and L3TP are all tunneling protocols.  make sure your VPN server machine is secure.  It is possible to connect to multiple VPN servers at the same time.  Site of the week powerlabs.org  NOTE:  This was episode 2 of a back-to-back double header.

Notes:  Buck Dangler is back from a long hiatus with Johnny Swank.  BinRev fluffers have to be technically savvy.  New interface planned for Phreak Phactor.  Phreak Phactor user names will be the same as the Bell's Mind accounts.  Transgender midgets are tough to control.  Johnny Swank swears by visualization packages.  NotTheory doesn't recommend Bochs emulator, NotTheory carries around his development environment on a virtual image on a portable hard drive.  Virtual machines support a snap-shotting feature, or you can make a copy of the virtual machine yourself and archive it.  QEMU, VMware, and Microsoft Virtual Server are all virtualization software.  You're never really writing to the disk with virtualization it has to interface with the host operating system, setting up VM teams is how you can run multiple virtual machines instances together.  VMware ESX server is a bit different then other virtual machines because it is it's own operating system.  VMware server and VMware player are both free.  Premade virtual machines are called virtual appliances.  PTOV is a VMware tool that takes your physical disk and makes it a virtual machine.  Hardware is a virtualization software limitation.  Site of the week bulkmale.com

Notes:  Verbal and Savant are hosting this botnet special.  Verbal needs more mentors for his Mentorship Program.  Currently working on a web page for the Mentorship Program.  Savant talks about setting up a West Coast regional meeting.  A botnet is a collection of compromised computer systems that are used by a third-party.  Botnet can be used for click-fraud.  Distributed denial-of-service attacks and warez.  Phishers use botnets for spam mail.  Two main parts of a botnet the hosts that are controlled and the command and control node.  Most of the bots are modifications of existing bots such as eggdrop.  Some of the new bots have Google search features built in.  Nepenthes honeypot that emulates windows services.  A 6 million node botnet was found.  You can control a botnet over any protocal that can send and receive information.  energymech is an open-source bot that is used in a distributed botnet.  Shelf life for a botnet is about 24 hours.  Savant's word of wisdom "don't be a dumbass."  A decentralized botnet is most likely the wave of the future.  Look for any odd processes or anything in your temp directory.  Verbal recommends Bastille Linux which is a set of Perl scripts that hardens the system.
